XCVIII

I head to the greenhouse, forcing myself not to run. Don't drop Cassandra, don't drop Cassandra. Once we're inside, I reluctantly put her down, and we walk hand in hand to the table where Johanna is seated at. She looks up when she hears us come up to her. "Cassandra Reyes, what are you doing here?" Cassandra's smile falters, and I squeeze her hand.

"Sorry, ma'am, it's my fault. I dragged her over here because I had something to tell her. Um, I mean, tell you. Both of you." Johanna leans forward. "Yes?" In response, Cassandra lifts her hand up. "I'm getting married!" Johanna blinks. "What?" I grin. "I asked your daughter to marry me, and, surprisingly, she said yes."

Johanna's eyes widen. "Oh, sweetheart, that's great!" Johanna gets up and reaches over to hug both of us at once. "I just can't believe it. My little girl's getting married!" Cassandra laughs. "I'm not so little anymore." Johanna sighs. "Don't remind me. Have you set a date yet?"

Cassandra glances at me expectantly. "How about now?" Johanna chuckles. "You're joking, right?" I shake my head. "No. Not really." Johanna rolls her eyes goodnaturedly. "You can't be serious. We need time to prepare everything!"

I try not to let my annoyance show. "How long." Johanna is silent for a moment. "A week." She must have seen the look on my face, because she says, "Five days." Too long. "Three." Johanna sighs. "Deal." I grin.

"Thanks, Mrs. Reyes." Johanna hold her hand up. "Call me Johanna. Now, would you be so kind as to leave us so that we can discuss Cassandra's gown? It's bad luck to let the groom look at or even picture the dress before the actual ceremony."

Cassandra turns to roll her eyes at me. "Go, or she'll change her mind and make us wait a year to get married." I laugh. "See you soon." I give Johanna one last hug and leave the greenhouse. All good things to those who wait.

Before I know it, three days have gone by, and I'm standing in Matthew's room, having him fix my tie. "This is it." Matthew smiles. "Yep. You nervous?" I smirk. "No, of course not. It's not like I'm getting married or anything." Matthew laughs.

"Very funny." I put on my suit jacket, then turn to face him. "Is everyone coming?" I asked Matthew to invite the entire Dauntless community. Like it or not, they'd soon become my fellow faction members. Cassandra's too, I remind myself.

Matthew would make sure of it. Even though I'd already forgiven him, I was still grateful about the deal I'd made with him weeks earlier. I wanted Cassandra by my side for the rest of my life, and the only way to assure that was to be certain that she wouldn't be kicked out.

I ignore the guilt starting to gnaw at me and focus on my upcoming wedding instead. "Yeah." I grin. "Good, because Lauren would probably stab me in the back if I didn't let her be there." Matthew slaps me on the back. "Well, time to go, son."

Stop stalling, I tell myself. "You're right. Let's go." Matthew stares at me for a moment. "I'm proud of you, Four." I embrace him, and then head out to the train tracks alongside my dad. My real dad. I stop walking halfway out the door.

"Matthew, wait." He frowns. "What's wrong? Not getting cold feet, are you?" I shake my head. "No. I just have a question. Did you ever meet one initiate a few years ago named... David Reyes?" His face hardened. "Why do you ask?" I turn to face him. "He was Cassandra's brother. And... he committed suicide."

Matthew laughs bitterly. "He didn't kill himself. He was murdered." I knew it. "What? Why?" He glances around, probably to make sure no one is within earshot. "I don't know who did it, exactly. But I know he had no reason to end his own life. Of all the initiates that year, he was one of the least hostile ones. He ranked first throughout the entire initiation, and he was very athletic. Very strong. When we started the fear simulation tests, he got out faster than any of the other transfers."

He glances at me. "Like you. I administered his simulation the first time, and I quickly realized that he was divergent. I warned him about it, and manually added in his results so as to not make the others suspect anything. But all that was for nothing. I must've messed up somewhere along the way, because he was found dead, in the chasm, a week later. I'm positive that a spy for the Erudite did it. As I said before, those who turn in divergents are... rewarded."

I shake my head, not fully comprehending his explanation. "But...why?" Matthew sighs. "I don't know, son. People are greedy. That's one of the reasons why the faction system became our way of life. The founders thought that by categorizing people, they could control their actions. But obviously that idea is flawed, or there would be no divergents in existence. That's what makes you unique. That's why you must never tell anyone about what you've discovered."

I nod, letting the information sink in. "Well... I think we should go. Cassandra's probably thinking I changed my mind about this wedding thing." Matthew laughs and we make our way to the tracks. When we get outside, a huge crowd is there, all Dauntless, waiting to accompany me to the ceremony.

As soon as they see us, they surround me, slapping me on the back and making noise like only they can. I shake hands, accept their congratulations, and line up with them to prepare for the jump. I throw myself in the others, and check my pocket as soon as I regain my balance. The other ring is still there. Good. "Four! Congratulations!" Zeke and Lauren take a seat behind me, and I grin. "Thanks. Love your bridesmaid dress, by the way."

It's a deep scarlet red, with a very low neckline, which Zeke no doubt approves of. "Not my favorite color, but that's what friends are for." Zeke pretends to wipe tears away.

"I can't believe you're getting married. Our little Four, all grown up." I roll my eyes. "Hey, is Eric coming to the ceremony?" Lauren frowns. "I hope not. Cassandra deserves to be happy, especially today. And anyway, I didn't see him get in."

Good. I want him as far away from Cassandra as possible. Once we get to Amity headquarters, everyone jumps off the train and heads inside the greenhouse. I'm amazed at how it's been transformed. Rows of chairs fill the room, and a long red carpet leads up to the front where two seats await us, and to the side stands an enormous vanilla chocolate cake.

The Amity are still getting things ready, since the ceremony doesn't officially start until two. My eyes are abruptly covered, and I grin. "Guess who?" I pretend to think about it. "Let me guess... Eric?"

Cassandra elbows me. "Hey-" I cut her off by placing a kiss on her lips. "I missed you, beautiful." She leans into me, smiling. "I missed you too." I pull back, suddenly remembering what I discovered about her brother. "I need to talk to you. Alone."

She raises an eyebrow. "Uh, okay. I only have a few minutes. I escaped the moment I heard you guys were here. A few of my friends wanted to help get me ready, but they think I need a ton of makeup on my face in order to be deemed worthy of appearing in public."

I laugh. "Well, tell them I think you look gorgeous with or without it." She grabs my hand and beckons me forward. "Come on." Her robe doesn't hide the fact that she's even thinner than the last time I saw her, and the ever-present bandana is still wrapped around her head.

But she's here, you moron. Be thankful for that. She takes me outside, to our treehouse. Thankfully, no one is there. "What's going on?" I sigh, not sure where to begin. Get it over with. I tell her everything Matthew told me, and, in the end, she looks... peaceful. I expected her to be sad, even angry.

But she's as happy as I've ever seen her. "I'm sorry. I thought you should know." She nods. "You helped me discover the truth. Now I know my brother really wasn't the "suicidal hellion" everyone made him out to be after news of his death spread. Thank you for that."

I search her face. "All I want is for you to be happy... and I promise to devote the rest of my life to making sure of that." She smiles and kisses my cheek. "So will I. I love you, Tobias." I look at the heart carved into the bark. "And I you."

We walk back to the greenhouse, and Liam meets us at the entrance. "Cassandra, what's wrong with you? Everyone's waiting to finish doing your makeup! The ceremony's gonna start soon! Come on!" He's wearing a yellow suit and red tie, with a black lapel pin shaped like a rose. "Looking sharp." I nod approvingly, and he winks. "Like what you see?"

I'm taken aback by the comment, but laugh nonetheless. "You wish!" I watch them walk away, and walk around, greeting everyone. I see Irene and Matthew sitting side by side in one of the rows, and head their way. As I approach, I hear Irene say "-and, well, I realize you did it to protect him. It was Robin's fault. I have no choice but to forgive you."

She smiles, and I know the gesture is genuine. "Hey, Irene." She turns and gasps when she sees me. "My,my. What have we here? You look so handsome! Cassie is a lucky girl." I blush. "I'm the lucky one." We spend the next half hour making small talk, until Johanna taps me on the shoulder. "It's time." I get up, and she takes a moment to hug me. "Take care of her," she whispers. "I will." She smiles, and leads me to the front of the room where I will be standing.

She takes a seat in the front row and everyone is silent as the music starts playing. The doors open, and in walks my bride. I can't help but gasp along with the others as she comes into view. She's in a red dress, adorned with a bejeweled black belt and light yellow veil.

Accompanying her is none other than Liam, who's all smiles. They soon reach the end of the aisle, and Liam takes a seat in one of the chairs after leaving her with me. The Candor-clad judge steps between us, and starts talking. We sit on the chairs reserved for us, never letting go of each other's hands. "Dear family and friends, we have gathered here today to witness and celebrate the wedding of Cassandra and Tobias. Do you, Tobias, take Cassandra to be your lawfully wedded wife? Do you vow to love, comfort, honor and keep her, in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, for better or for worse for as long as you both shall live?" I grin. "I do."

The judge turns to Cassandra. "Do you, Cassandra, take Tobias to be your lawfully wedded husband? Do you vow to love, comfort, honor and keep him, in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, for better or for worse for as long as you both shall live?" Cassandra laughs. "I do." The judge clears his throat. "May I have the rings?"

A little girl hurries to the front, holding a pillow with two gold wedding rings on top. He hands me one and says, "The wedding ring is an unbroken symbol of the everlasting love and commitment between man and wife. Repeat after me. With this ring, I thee wed." I echo him. "With this ring, I thee wed." I take Cassandra's hand and place the ring on her finger. Then, the judge hands her the second one, and she says, "With this ring, I thee wed." She places the ring on my finger, and grins.

"I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride." I lean forward and brush my lips with hers. Everyone cheers, and I carry her outside. "Time for your very first dance as newlyweds!" Liam leads us to the center of the crowd, and a group of musicians start playing a slow song.

I place my hand on her waist and she rests hers in mine. "I love you, Mrs. Eaton." She laughs. "And I-" She never gets to finish the sentence because, just then, two shots ring out.
