LXXXVI
Robin smirks as she turn to look at Matthew. "Matt, darling. What are you doing here?" He ignores her, never taking his eyes off me. "I heard noise coming from your room, and thought maybe an initiate had snuck in. But I see I was wrong."
My eyes widen as I realize what he's thinking. "No, Matthew, that's not what happened!" Robin laughs. "Come on, Four. Don't be shy. You weren't a few minutes ago." I push her away, and she falls back. "I'm serious, Matthew!" Robin grins. "Don't listen to him. He practically begged me to let him in. He's been feeling pretty lonely ever since that girlfriend of his left him." Matthew crosses his arms.
"Is that true?" I shake my head. "No, dad, it isn't!" Robin raises an eyebrow. "Dad? Are you two related?" She gasps. "You are! Well, well, well. He came to me just like you did when what's-her-name died. Like father, like son."
I want to hit her. She's talking about my mother! Before I can do anything, Matthew astounds me by smiling. "Come here, Robin." She complies. "Want to join the fun?" Matthew shakes his head. "No, actually, I wanted to give you a little tip."
He grabs a handful of her hair and yanks her to the side. "Never mess with my son again. Stay away from him." She bursts out laughing. "Who's gonna make me?" Matthew pulls out his gun. "Maybe this will."
Robin's eyes widen, and the next thing I know, Matthew has pulled the trigger. Robin crumples to the ground, and I stare at her lifeless body, the sound of the gunshot still echoing in my ears. "Matthew, what did you do?!" Oddly enough, he is calm, much calmer than I'd be if I'd just killed someone.
"I killed her. She insulted your mother, lied about me, assaulted you. I had no choice." I frown. "Yes, you did! She was drunk. She didn't know what she was doing." Matthew shakes his head. "Oh, but she did. Trust me, she would have attacked you again. If not today, tomorrow, or the next day... until she got what she wanted."
I don't believe him. "Was that true? What she said about you and her?" Matthew stares at the corpse on the ground. "Of course not. She was the one who kept harassing me, not the other way around."
He turns to look at me. "You've got to believe me!" For some reason, I do believe him. It'd be just like Robin to harass someone and then make it seem like she was the victim. "I trust you." Relief is written all over his face. "What are you going to do now?" I'll have to help him hide the body, help him escape.
Matthew can probably tell what I'm thinking, because he holds up his hand. "I am not going to run away. I killed Robin, and I have to face the consequences. No matter what." My eyes widen. "You don't mean..." Matthew nods. "Yes. I'm going to turn myself in." I cannot believe what I'm hearing. "But-" Matthew shakes his head. "No buts. But... before I confess my crime, I need you to tell me something. I need you to be honest."
I swallow. Asking me to tell the truth is like forcing me to stay away from Cassandra. Impossible. "Of course." He stands directly in front of me and forces me to look him in the eye. "Do you still love Cassandra?"
That's one question I can answer truthfully. "Yes. With all my heart." Matthew nods. "Okay. Now, go. I don't want you here when I'm arrested." I want to protest, to stay. I want to protect him. But it's useless. I turn away, and before I walk out the door, I can hear Matthew sobbing.
