Chapter Four - First Sunday

It was 08:55 in the morning, an hour after breakfast. The Grade One and Grade Two students (clad in their Sunday Best) were accompanied by Headmistress Diane. It was Sunday, the day when people go to church; rest themselves; and prepare for the first day of the new week. The lower levels would go to church in the morning, while the higher levels would go to church in the evening. They boarded the shuttle bus from the school and to the nearest Catholic Church. When they had arrived, they formed a line and followed the headmistress to the church building.

The Victorian-style building was one of the oldest church buildings around Philip's town- over a hundred years old. Though it was renovated, folks could sense the old atmosphere that lingered since the church building's first mass was held. Headmistress Diane led them to the left side of the church and sat there with her fellow students. The children were quiet and well-behaved. When the mass started, it felt like a usual mass. However, Philip felt like that there were other beings around the church area, singing and praising God. Philip turned his head to find more people, but these people were different from the rest of the churchgoers. Aside from the fact that they were semi-transparent, another thing they had in common was that they usually hang around at the churchyard, as if they were souls standing by their tombs. Philip could see them, hear them, feel them and he even communicated with them when the holy mass was over. But how come no one else could see what Philip sees, hear what he hears, feel what he feels, though the strange beings were among them? It was a mystery Philip would solve, but later.

While Headmistress Diane and her students waited for the shuttle bus, Philip saw the man that followed him since his father's funeral. The man stood next to him, resting his right hand on Philip's shoulder.

"Why are you here?" Philip asked.

"I'm your Protector, remember? I'm just looking out for you."

"But why would you follow me here? They might see you."

"Philip, who are you talking to?" his best friend, Louis, asked him. This somehow surprised Philip, for the man was right in front of him!

"Never mind, Louis. I'm just talking to myself," Philip told his best friend.

"Oh, okay. I thought you were crazy, because you were talking to nobody, but actually you were talking to yourself."

The children and the headmistress boarded the shuttle bus and headed back to the boarding school. Ordinary people would think that Philip was sitting next to his best friend, Louis. Special people could see that another person, a young man, was also sitting next to Philip. It was because they, like Philip, had a gift. A gift granted from birth.

When Philip was already inside his dorm, ready to sleep, his Protector visited him.

"Why are you here?" asked Philip.

"I'm just here to say goodnight, that's all," the man replied.

"But why can't my friend see you? You were right in front of him."

"You will realize why, Philip. But for now, that would be your mystery., the man fidgeted and sat closer to him on the bed.

"Do you know the Guardian Angel's Prayer?"

"We haven't learned it yet," Philip replied.

"Then I'll teach you how to pray it." he said. They made the sign of the cross and prayed.

"Angel of God, My Guardian Dear," the man began.

"Angel of God, My Guardian Dear," Philip repeated.

"To whom God's love commits me here,"

"To whom God's love commits me here,"

"Ever this night be at my side,"

"Ever this night be at my side,"

"To light and guard, to rule and guide,"

"To light and guard, to rule and guide,"

"Amen." They said simultaneously. They made the sign of the cross and bade each other goodnight.

It was a special Sunday.
