Catching Up

The morning sun shone brightly through my bedroom window. I groaned in annoyance and pulled the comforter over my head, hoping the sun would just disappear so I could continue sleeping. My bedroom door clicked open and I rolled over to see Lyza standing in the doorway, a smug expression on her face. I just pulled the blanket back over my head and closed my eyes.
"Rosalie, wake up and get ready. We have to go soon," she told me.
As soon as she finished her sentence, my bedroom door shut. I removed the covers off of my body and looked at the clock. It was eleven in the morning. I grimaced at the clock and stood up before heading over to my purple suitcase. I pulled out a ruffled pink tank top, a beige leather jacket and jean shorts before changing. Once my clothes were on, I put on my beige ankle boots and my glasses. After letting my hair down, I was ready to go.
I grabbed my wallet from my purse and headed downstairs where Drew and Lyza were sitting on the couch watching TV. They turned to face me as my heels sounded on the hard wood floor.
"I'm ready to go," I told them with a smile.
The two of them got up. Drew walked over to grab a set of keys and soon we were out the door. I followed the two of them passed my Range Rover and to their 2015 Chevrolet Impala. I got in the back seat while Lyza got in the passenger's seat and Drew got in the driver's seat. We pulled out of the driveway and were soon on the way to our destination.
"That's a pretty nice car you've got back there," Drew told me.
I smiled.
"Thank you so much."
The rest of the ride was silent but it was a comfortable silence. After about five more minutes of driving, we pulled into one of mine and Lyza's favorite restaurants to eat before I moved away: Dale's. I smiled and nearly jumped out of the car when Drew parked. It had been years since I had been here and since it was family owned, it was the only in existence.
Drew and Lyza laughed at my child-like behavior and I hugged them both.
"Thank you guys so much for bringing me here," I exclaimed.
"It's no problem at all," Lyza told me.
I released them and headed into the restaurant. It was the same as I had remembered it before I moved away. I smiled at the building and headed off to find a seat. Drew and Lyza were following shortly after me. I came to the booth that Lyza and I would normally sit in when we came here. I sat down quickly and Drew and Lyza sat across from me.
"So you remember huh?" Lyza baited.
I nodded.
"Of course I do. How could I forget? We used to come here all the time," I smiled.
The waitress came over to our table and we ordered our drinks. Once I had my tea and Drew and Lyza had their soda, the small talk began.
"So, are you ready?" Drew asked me with a smirk on his face.
I took a sip of my tea and chuckled before leaning back into my seat.
"Go ahead, Colt," I instructed him, using his last name.
"How's your life been?" he asked.
I thought for a moment.
"It's been fairly well. I'm stressed out to say the least but I'll be fine," I answered him.
"Why are you stressed out? I never got the chance to ask you," Lyza stated.
"Just everything. With my mom's birthday coming up, things have just been a little rough for me," I half lied.
The both of them gave me a sympathetic look.
"I'm sorry, Rosie."
I smiled at her.
"It's okay. But, keep going," I told them.
"What I want to know is how you were able to afford that Range Rover and the Camaro. I saw that picture you posted on Twitter a few years ago," Drew teased.
The talk of Bee just made me want to pull my hair out, but instead of showing him that I was upset, I smiled. Before I had the chance to answer him though, the waitress returned, this time asking us what we wanted to eat. I ordered my usual: a barbecue chicken sandwich with homemade fries. Once we were done ordering, Drew looked at me.
"So? You gonna spill or not?"
I playfully rolled my eyes and took another sip of my tea.
"Well, my dad bought the Range Rover and I couldn't really tell you how I acquired the Camaro," I told him.
"Well, what do the others drive?" he asked me.
I pursed my lips.
"If I told you, you'd hate me because I know how you are about cars."
"Just tell me."
"All I'm saying is that we have the Camaro, a Corvette Stingray, a Bugatti Grande Sport Vitesse, some military vehicle and two other Range Rovers besides the one I drove here. They're more family cars than anything else," I told him.
His eyes were ready to burst from his head and I laughed.
"Are you serious right now?" he exclaimed.
I nodded.
"We're taking a trip to this girl's house soon, okay?" he asked Lyza.
She laughed and rolled her eyes.
"I'm sure we'll get to go soon," she assured him.
He had a sly smile on his face.
"How did you manage to acquire all of them?"
I shrugged.
"I couldn't tell you, Drew."
He rolled his eyes. The waitress came back with our food and as soon as she sat my plate down, I dug in. It's been so long since I've had this and I had forgotten how much I missed the taste of it.
"Is it as good as you remember?" Lyza asked.
I nodded as I bit into one of my french fries.
"It's my turn now though. How did you two come to be?" I asked them.
Drew took a bite out of his BLT before answering me.
"Why are you asking? You were there," he stated with a mouth full of food.
I grimaced at his poor table manners.
"I know that but, ya'll got married. I never expected that. Plus you're so young," I teased.
Lyza smiled.
"I really don't know, but I'm just glad he dumped that little girl when he did. I couldn't stand the way she treated him," she exclaimed.
I rolled my eyes at the thought of her.
"You're telling me."
Drew scoffed.
"I'm right here. I can hear ya'll."
I laughed and took a bite out of my sandwich.
"We know."
"So, Rosie. How's your love life?" Lyza asked me.
I smiled at the thought of Brayden.
"Good. I guess you could say that I had a boyfriend even though I'm not very fond of titles. His name is Brayden and he's quite the catch if I do say so myself," I told her.
She raised her eyebrows at me and smiled.
"It's been awhile since you've been with someone. I really hope it works out for you. I love the fact that you're happy; without the exceptions of course."
I finished my sandwich and pushed my plate to the side.
"Thank you."
"How's Chicago?" Drew asked me.
I sighed.
"Overrated," I simply answered him.
He laughed.
"I see you're not liking life in the big city, are you?"
"It's okay sometimes. I'm just getting so tired of how enormous it is. I'd much rather be back here," I told him.
"I completely understand your struggle. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to pay this bill," he said and got up.
I made a move to get out of my seat.
"Are you sure you don;t want me to pay for mine?" I called to him.
He just waved his hand at me and continued on to the front desk. I sighed and got up.
"Are you ready?" I asked Lyza.
She nodded and got up. We walked out of the restaurant and to the car, Drew following shortly behind us. Once we were all situated inside the car, Drew drove off.
"Thank you guys," I stated.
"It's no problem at all, Rosie. Trust me," Lyza assured me.
I smiled at her.
"So, where are we going now?" I asked the couple as we drove through the familiar scenery of the town.
"That is a surprise," Drew said.
I groaned and sat back in my seat. Soon Drew pulled off onto a very familiar road and my breath nearly caught in my throat. He drove up the hill for a few more moments before stopping in front of a large brick house. Lyza turned to face me, a small smile on her face.
"Go on," she instructed me.
My hands were trembling. I gave her a slight nod before moving to open up the car door. I stepped out of the car and walked over to stand on the sidewalk. I stared at the house in front of me. It still looked the same as it did back in 2015 only now it looked slightly abandoned and incredibly lifeless. The flowers that my mother had planted in the yard the spring before she passed were now dead. The only vegetation in the yard was that of a few bushes and small trees.
I took a deep breath and walked up the driveway, passed the two-car garage and onto the stone path that led up to the stairs. I climbed the stairs and stood on the porch, an eerie feeling sinking into my body. The paint on the burgundy door was beginning to fade ever so slightly and I frowned. I placed my hand on the warm door knob and twisted it and to my surprise it was unlocked. I pushed the door open and stepped inside, the floor creaking under my weight.
The furniture was all still here. When we moved, we couldn't afford a moving truck because of my mother's funeral expenses so we were forced to take only the basic necessities. Jordan had bought our furniture for our house down in Texas. I smiled sadly at the thought of my dad's fallen friend and proceeded further on into the house.
Most everything was now covered in a few layers of dust but that was understandable. The house had been sitting like this for years. I understood why my dad didn't want to sell the house but then again if he would've if probably would've helped with our financial issues. I ran my finger over the coffee table in the family room, leaving a thin line on the piece of furniture.
The family room was just as we had left it. The beige furniture all sat in their designated areas. The flat screen TV still hung on the wall above the fireplace. The paint on the walls was starting to fade just a bit. I sighed and walked through the family room and into the dining room and kitchen. I ran my hand across the granite conutertop, collecting some dust particles onto my hand as I did so.
Soon I came to the staircase and slowly climbed up. I smiled when I remembered the last good memory I had of this house.
Lynleigh and I were chasing Jason through the house. He had managed to "smackcam" the both of us while his friend Ethan recorded it. The two of us were covered in whipped cream after that and needless to say we were very angry about it. As we chased him, Jason had ended up tripping over a rug upstairs and the impact from the fall caused the can of whipped cream to literally explode. It went everywhere, especially all over Jason. That was enough payback for Lynleigh and I.
I entered into my old bedroom. The baby blue paint that was on the walls was just as bright as it had been when I first paintedmy room. My queen sized bed sat in the middle of my room against the wall. The bed wasn't made, but for me even today that was normal. My dressers still sat in the same place though they were empty and covered with dust. My body lenght mirror was still nailed to my closet door, the note my mom had written on it in permanent marker still visible which caused me to smile.
I exited my bedroom and headed across the hall to my parents' old room. The king sized bed was made. Everything looked to be perfectly in order. I took a step further into the room and stopped when I heard glass crunching under my feet. I stepped back and looked down to see a broken picture frame with a picture in it. I bent down to look at it.
In the picture was Jason, Lynleigh, my dad, my mom and myself on the beach. It was one of the only family pictures we had ever taken together. I could feel a tear run down my face as I looked at the picture. I was hugging my mother, a huge smile on my face. She had one arm wrapped around me while my her other arm was behind her back trying to hold up fifteen year old Lynleigh. Jason was on my dad's back and my dad had one of his arms wrapped around my mother's shoulder. It was a crazy picture but it was one of my favorites. I put the picture in my back pocket before wiping my eyes and heading out of the bedroom.
I ran back downstairs and to the front door. The memories from being in that house were starting to get to me and I didn't need that to add on to my already unwanted stress. I opened up the door and stepped onto the porch. After locking the door, I headed down the front steps and onto the path. I was on the sidewalk, ready to get into the car when I heard a very familiar voice call my name.
I cursed to myself and turned to see Brooke marching down her front steps. I noticed her Audi R8 sitting in her driveway and I laughed to myself. She was way too spoiled.
Brooke ran over to me, her five inch heels clicking on the pavement. I mentally rolled my eyes. She was always dressed like a million dollars. She smiled when she approached me.
"What are you doing here?" she asked me sweetly.
All I wanted to do right now was smack the smile off of her caked face. I've despised her since high school began and though I was an adult now that's the way it would always be between us.
"Uh, I just thought I should get away for a day or so," I answered her.
She touched my arm, the small notion making me want to smack her even more. I took a deep breath and calmed myself down.
"Why are you talking to me?" I asked her.
She frowned.
"I just haven't seen you in such a long time or talked to you. I'm kind of shocked that you're even here right now. Why were you in your old house?" she asked me.
I glanced at the house before looking at her.
"Just reminiscing, that's all."
She nodded and I sighed.
"Look, I don't mean to be rude but I have to go. You remember when we talked on the phone a few years ago?" I asked her.
She nodded slightly.
"Good. It'd be wise of you to remember what I told you as well," I told her bitterly.
I got into the car as quickly as I could, leaving Brooke on the sidewalk with a sad expression on her face. As soon as I was in the car, Drew took off back down the street. I leaned my head back against the seat and sighed.
"What did she want?" Lyza asked, slight disgust in her voice.
If it wasn't obvious, not many people were very buddy-buddy with Brooke. Most everyone in the city despised her aside from her own family.
"I have no clue. I didn't give her much time to say anything," I answered her.
She chuckled.
"Thank you guys for doing this for me. It means more than you'll ever know. I would've never had the balls to go back into that house on my own conscience," I told them.
"We may not have talked in years, but we'd do anything for you and you know that. We love you, Rose," Drew told me from the driver's seat.
I smiled.
"I love you guys too."
