Every day after school, Josh keeps going to the same Quick Mart, secretly hoping to see Tyler there. He always does.
Sometimes they run into one another in the store, sometimes in the parking lot, sometimes just outside or inside the automatic glass doors. Every time, Tyler's battery is below ten percent. Every time, Josh gives him his charger, and every time, Tyler takes it.
These 'chance' meetings continue for almost a week, until they officially no longer become chance. Josh gets two sodas now, one for himself and one for Tyler, and even on days when Tyler doesn't really need groceries, he shows up, waiting outside.
The most Josh's ever seen Tyler's battery is twenty percent, which is on Sundays. Tyler's mother doesn't work on Sundays, and so the charger stays home, and he can use it as needed, as long as no one else is using it at the time.
On these days, Tyler doesn't charge, and Josh doesn't ask him to. They just sit around on the sidewalk outside the Quick Mart, ignoring the occasional glare from passerby, and they talk.
Their lives are rather different from one another. Josh goes to private school, Tyler goes to public school. Josh's family has money, while Tyler's family is broke. Josh has every opportunity to succeed in life, while Tyler does not.
It's just about the battery, at first.
