Josh brings a vase the next day, and puts the flowers in it. Tyler is thankful, but weak. He's coughing even more than yesterday, and his battery life is pretty low, even after long periods of charging. He tells Josh in a rasping voice that it can't hold a charge anymore.
Josh should be sad, and upset, but he isn't. He's just angry.
He's not mad at himself, or the sickness, or Tyler, or anything specific. He's just generally angry.
Neither boy speaks much that day, Tyler silenced by his disease and Josh silenced by rage.
When the nurse brings in Tyler's dinner, he can't sit up to eat it. He turns his head away, but Josh can see the tears streaking down his face. He leaves Tyler alone, knowing he doesn't want to be seen like this.
It's at this point that Josh realizes the truth.
Tyler is dying.
Josh doesn't walk home, he storms there, like a hurricane raging across the sky. When he gets there, he goes to the big canal behind his house, and throws his charger into it as hard as he can.
When he asks his parents if he can borrow one of their chargers, they ask where his went. Josh lies and says he lost it.
