Chapter Four: Welcome to the World, Helena Wayne

Note: I'm not pregnant, I've never been pregnant and I plan on never getting pregnant—adoption or nothing else. Please excuse any misinformation because I didn't look anything up before I started and am just winging it! Ok?
Okay!

WAYNE MANOR, NINE MONTHS LATER...

Bruce's POV

The family had adjusted to Selina being at the manor better than I expected... granted, there were some hiccups and some wary eyes but we made it work.

It had been unusually quiet in Gotham for a while now, nothing except the occasional robbery which I am sure Gothamites appreciated... even if it made everyone a little uneasy.

Selina's POV

I was just sitting on the couch in the manor's living room when it happened. I started to feel an uncomfortable pain in my stomach and then as I stood up... my water broke.
"Ow...h...help!" I tried to shout through the pain. Wincing and attempting to walk towards Bruce's office, grabbing my phone quickly on the way.

Bruce's POV

Is that—?

I should probably just go over to check.

I opened the door to find Selina in the middle of the hallway in pain.

"Bruce... it's... it's the baby. It's coming. The baby is coming." She looks elated for a brief moment and I smile slightly too, before attempting to support her.
"Tim, Alfred!! The baby is coming!!" I shouted to the house.

It was all in a flash. I don't honestly remember what happened next aside from Alfred, Selina and I getting in the car while Tim stayed behind to get a ride from Dick.

GOTHAM CITY HOSPITAL...

Bruce's POV

The hospital staff took Selina to a hospital room and in the meantime I had to pretend I wasn't a nervous wreck.

I watched the kids for a bit as they settled next to each other. Dick was with Barbara, Tim was with Stephanie and Jason was with Cassandra.

They looked as nervous and agitated as I was, just sitting down to wait for possibly hours.

I watched Dick kiss Barbara's forehead and Stephanie squeeze Tim's hand and Cassandra calmly down Jason in a corner.

Eventually, I got up and grabbed a coffee from the vending machine, preparing myself for any moment when the doctor would give me news.

HOURS LATER...

"Mister Wayne?" A nurse came over to me and I shook myself awake, checking the clock to see it was 7pm.
"Yes?" I asked, wide awake and alert as I stood up.

The kids followed suit.

"Is everything alright?" Barbara asked with concern.

"Yes, everything is fine." The nurse reassured Barbara before turning back to me, "Mister Wayne, I am happy to report that Miss Kyle and the baby are perfectly healthy and if you'd like you can visit them."

"Oh...that's wonderful. Thank you so much!"

"No problem. Just doing my job. If you could follow me." The nurse says, gesturing for me to come along.

SELINA'S DELIVERY ROOM...

I came in quietly and the nurse left to give us some privacy, saying she would collect Dick, Jason, Tim, Barbara, Stephanie and Cassandra in a few moments.

I nodded to that and then turned to see Selina was there in the bed, looking elated and tired all at once.

And in her arms was a great joy: my baby. As I got closer, Selina spoke.

"She's a girl, Bruce." She explains in a soft voice, trying not to wake the baby.

She seems to notice the noise anyway and let's out a yawn, opening her eyes to reveal they were green like her mother's smile.

I couldn't help but smile down at her as she giggled upon seeing my face, like she knew who I was.

Her eyes were green like Selina's and her hair was black like mine.

I was so overcome with emotion that I started to cry. She looked...absolutely perfect.

"Have you decided on a name, yet?" I ask Selina, pulling myself away from looking at my daughter's face.

All the months leading up to the birth, Selina had decided that she had wanted to name the baby herself.

"Yes." She says with a small smile on her face. "But I want to wait til the others get here."

As though on cue, the nurse returned with my boys plus Barbara, Cassandra and Stephanie in tow.

"Hi everyone. Come in!" Selina encouraged, still keeping her voice low to not scare the baby.

The others in the room marveled at her and cooed softly.

A swell of pride welled up in my chest as I watched all of my family here with me and seeing my daughter for the first time.

"Now that everyone is here," Selina begins after a few minutes, "I want you all to meet my daughter: Helena...Helena Wayne."

"That's...a great name." I say, my emotions getting the better of me as the others murmur their approval and come closer to her.

Helena sits in her mother's arms and smiles at everyone, clearly enjoying the attention.

And I couldn't help but think that she'll fit right in.

WAYNE MANOR, EVENING...

It took us about an hour to return back to the manor and once we did, I was greeted by an unexpected surprise: my cousin Kate and her niece Bette in the hallway.

"Oh good you're here! Congratulations on the baby by the way." Kate said, smiling at both Selina and I while I was staring at her suspiciously.
"Kate...I do love seeing you, but what are you doing here?"
"Well...about that—"
"Hey, wait! I want to see the baby." Bette interrupts, going over to Selina as she holds up Helena for her to see.

"How did you know about the birth?" I asked.

"Well," Bette begins, "Bruce, these things happen when you don't turn your communicator off!" She says with a wink and I quickly check my pockets to find it is indeed on—I didn't even remember leaving it in my pocket.

"As for why we are here," Kate interrupts, "I...need you to let Bette stay at the manor for a few days."
"What? Why can't she stay with you?" I ask Kate before turning to Bette, "I thought you were at university?"

"Oh I am! But I'm off for a week but mom and dad sent me up here to Gotham." Bette explains.

"She can't stay with me because I'm going on a four week business trip. I'm sorry, Bruce, my hands are tied." My cousin shrugs, an apologetic look on her face. I sigh and then nod.
"Alright, fine. Bette can stay." I explain, admitting defeat.
"Awesome!" Bette says with a smile as she moves from Selina and the baby to grab her bags.
"Thanks Bruce. I owe you." Kate says with a wink.
"Mm-hm." I grunt.

"Will you be staying for dinner, Miss Kane?" Alfred appears and both I and Kate turn to him.

"Yes, Alfred. I would love that, actually."

Cassandra's POV

"Hey Cass?" I turned to see Jason standing in front of me. I give him a questionable look.
"I just wanted to thank you for calming down at the hospital." I shrugged.
"It was no problem. You looked like you needed a word of encouragement."
"Well...yeah," Jason scratches the back of his neck sheepishly, "that's uh...all I wanted to say."

I nod and then step forward. He looks confused as I was moments ago and before I can do anything or say anything, I gave into the urge and kissed his cheek.

I backed away and blushed bright red.

He looked just as embarrassed as I was and we both avoided eye contact.

I...think I just made everything worse.

"Um...I gotta go. Sorry!" I apologize, rushing away before I embarrassed myself further.
"Yeah, uh...me too!" He says and we go out separate ways, preparing to ignore each other for the rest of the week.

Author Notes

I don't care what current continuity says, to me: Kate and Bette have and always will be aunt and niece. I don't know why this is a hill I will die on but it is lol

ANYWAY—

Yay! My favorite girl Helena is here!

Fun fact: this series is the entire reason Helena is my favorite Batfamily member...so yeah. I basically made myself like her til she took over my entire account :')

Things that were changed/not changed:

—First off, the title was originally "A Surprise Guest and the Baby Comes!!"

—Selina is at Wayne Manor she goes into labor this time. It was stated by Bruce in the original that she moved out a month before because she was missing home. In the original book she was about to watch tv when she heard some water leaking and realized her water broke (yes, really. Don't look at me like that, I was 12/13!!).

•Also, yes, if you want to get technical, the story is around the time Tim is Robin the yj universe (because again it is set in that timeline technically because back when I had just watched the show, I made the 3rd generation of the Batfamily be on The Team. This isn't really for you, it's just a reminder for me—)

—I had Bruce talk about what his kids/what everyone was doing instead of the original book where there were WAY TOO MANY POV CHANGES—

•No, like, every other sentence there was a POV change and it was driving me crazy!

—I took out Cass and Jay having a moment where she gave fake wisdom (that was terrible characterization on my part but again, I can't be too harsh, I was literally 12) and instead I had Bruce observing the kids.

—Bruce and Selina having a moment together in her room wasn't in the original book

—Selina having Helena take Bruce's name was in the original book (which surprised me because I forgot that detail)

—Everything else is basically the same except for Cass and Jay's talk (and the beginning, which I mentioned last chapter)

—Bette's line about the communicator was in the original book but the dialogue is way smoother this time

—And the end is changed where it's just Cass and Jason having a moment rather than the entire family getting in on it and it all just be awkward and bad all around

—Since I took out their moment at the hospital, their romance doesn't really make sense but it's whatever. I'm not going to change it. There's too much going on in this chapter lol

I originally wrote this author's notes around the time I had just reached 1k (which I'm still extremely thankful for).

Instead, I'll talk about the reason this came back: I had previously published this a year ago but with school and COVID plus other books I couldn't give it my full attention.

I wish I could say I came back when I finally had time but that sadly is not the case: to keep this story short, I realized lately that I've been avoiding writing my IRL novels and was feeling really unhappy with my writing.

On top of that, I was thinking about rewriting Lucy Quinn—the fourth book in this series (don't ask, but you can thank season 6 of Legends of Tomorrow for inspiring the rewrite). And well...the rest is history.

Besides, it's my birthday month, I can't possibly be upset when I have my 19th birthday to look forward to, can I? :)

That's all!

BatgirlGeek❤️

P.S. It's not December anymore, but January. Stuff has obviously changed but I am too lazy to fix this announcement for the third time! This book is basically being updated sporadically.
