1. 3 Years Later
The host clicked his fork on his glass, gathering the party's attention. "On behalf of my wife and I, I would like to officially welcome you to the Drake Exhibition Studio. Our first exhibition, of many more to come, allows us to share with you but a shadow of the beauty that is the Caribbean..."
As Mr. Drake went on to make his speech, some of his guests were only superficially interested, waiting only for their own glory as he shared out their names and donations. Bruce Wayne, while not waiting for any glorification or regard, was already exhausted.
"So boring. No one gives a damn," he whispered down to his wife as he swapped his empty glass with a new one.
"You're being rude, Bruce," Selina warned him, trying to give her attention to the speaker. "And you're drunk. No more drinks."
She wrapped her hand around his glass but Bruce placed his left hand over hers, pulling her in closer as he moved his right hand around her.
"If I don't drink, I'm going to kill half the people in this fucking room," Bruce whispered, smiling at someone in the crowd. "So if you give a damn at all about anyone here, don't give a damn about me." He kissed the side of her head just as Drake ended his speech, raised his glass as the crowd applauded, then directed himself to the bar as he finished the one in his left hand.
"I thought you'd be having more fun!"
Selina jumped as someone came behind her.
"Seeing as art is right up your... gallery," Kate joked as she joined her sister in law.
"Oh, yeah. Definitely, my thing. It's just not our night tonight. We really shouldn't bother with parties anymore," Selina replied, turning to look at Bruce.
"Yeah, well you know me. All this jazz isn't really my style either," Kate flipped up the collar of her blazer. "But, I know the host so, you know, obligations. You should meet her!" Kate gently placed a hand on Selina's elbow, directing her away.
"I really should be..."
"No, you shouldn't. He's covered for the night," she pointed out her father approaching her cousin. "Let's me and you have some fun."
Kate and Selina walked the room, hunting down Janet Drake. Kate introduced her sister in law to her good friend, and stood by as the two archaeologists had a chat at a table. As she whistled, roaming her head, her eyes landed on a girl staring at a painting in confusion. Kate felt she might fit in better with that company and went to her.
"You know, I've been told I'm smarter than the average person but, I couldn't tell you what I'm looking at."
"Well obviously this is a person lighting a lamp," the girl swung her head, "or, this is C-3PO fixing BB8. I'm sorry, this art stuff is more my sister's thing!"
"Now Star Wars I can do! I once tried to build a functioning AT-AT..."
"A...nd?" The girl crossed her arms, waiting for Kate to finish her thought.
"It was more of a not-not," Kate replied sheepishly.
"You know what's a not-not? This party. Wanna skip?"
"Absolutely! I just gotta excuse first," Kate said, heading back to Janet.
"Oh, probably smart. I'll go with you," the girl followed Kate.
"Hey, you two!" Kate greeted the artists again. "Come up with a collaboration yet?"
"You'd know if you stuck around," Selina slapped her on the arm.
"I would but uh, I think I've extended my polite appearance for a friend."
"Oh, hey sis!" The girl caught up with Kate.
"I'm so sorry, you must be so tired Mugs. Um, Janet, this is my sister, Maggie. Maggie this is Janet, the host," Selina introduced them.
"Wonderful exhibition," Maggie said politely as she greeted Mrs. Drake. "I applaud your hard work. I'll definitely need more than a night to take it all in!"
"Well, good thing it's here to stay till our next venture. It's not gonna be for a long while."
"Great! Then, I'll be seeing you around. Oh, Selina. Kate and I are, heading out."
"Yeah, sure! Go on, have fun!" Selina encouraged them.
"Thanks. Um, I, uh, the car..." Maggie awkwardly began.
"Don't worry about it. I need to go to the manor anyway, work stuff. So, you'll have the place to yourself. I won't bother," she leaned in with a wink.
Maggie blushed and brushed her sister's arm. "Stop! Anyway, I'll see you later. Nice to see you, Janet."
Kate said her goodbyes and left with Maggie. Janet and Selina watched them leave, and then Mrs. Drake turned her attention to her guest.
"How long?"
"Excuse me?" Selina asked back, confused.
"You be married as long I have, you start to pick up on things. We've gone through episodes where I wore your exact look."
Looking across the room, Selina couldn't find her husband.
Fifteen minutes ago...
"...before I invite my lovely wife to share our thanks to our donors, I would like to invite all of us to watch a little presentation about where your money went."
As people turned to face the holographic screens around the perimeter of the room, Kate turned and saw her cousin. He was smiling at her, but he'd taught her how to read people better. His facade was hiding a much darker action, that worried Kate.
While people were watching the presentation about charity, Kate made her way to her father. They looked at Bruce leaning over the bar, and decided a plan of action before breaking towards their separate targets.
Jacob Kane walked across the room to get to his nephew.
"Long night already?" Jacob came up beside Bruce, and motioned for the bartender to cut him off.
"Just getting started!" Bruce replied, chugging his last drink.
Jacob laughed. "Well, before you get too far ahead, I was hoping to borrow you for five minutes to sign some documents."
"Yeah, sure! Got a pen?" Bruce drunkenly patted his uncle's breast pocket.
"Sorry, left it in my room. Let's walk, we can sign and come back. If you want to come back."
Bruce sluggishly laughed. "I can sign."
Jacob smiled and put an arm around his shoulders. "Good. Let's walk."
