Chapter 2
"Where is he?" Samantha mumbled to herself.
"Turn around would you?" A voice said behind her.
Samantha smiled as she turned around. He was not late at all, he was right there. Looking at him, she chuckled. The smile on her face grew and she waved him over. Quickly, he walked over and looked at her questioningly. Just by his expression, she knew what he was wondering.
"It's just... you look.... your clothes..." She picked at his shirt.
"Are they the wrong clothes?" He rose an eyebrow.
"No, it's just I didn't expect you to come with this." She let out a giggle.
"What do you mean?" He looked down at his clothes.
In all truthfulness, Samantha didn't think Van would come looking like an athlete. No, he did not look like he would come in a nerdy outfit. However, she did not think that he would come in some high-quality track pants and sleeveless track top. Samantha looked closer at him, realizing that he had more to him than the scrawny body that she had seen yesterday. She shrugged it off and let her eyes stare into his sky blue eyes.
"Show me what you've got." With that, Samantha shoved her basketball into his arms as she backed away.
Van's eyes travelled to the ball and he stared at it with doubt in his eyes. Looking up, he threw the ball back, a sharp and smooth pass made it to Samantha. Shaking his head, he got closer to her. She absorbed the pass and watched him intently.
He stared at her chocolatey brown eyes. "Show me, don't make me show you."
"Uh..." A silence came over Samantha.
This never happened. Never has someone made her speechless, not like this anyways. She quickly regained her confidence and backed up a bit. She passed him the ball again and grabbed another one that she had brought.
"Can you dribble?" She started to dribble.
"Yeah." He followed after her.
"Now, you've got the dribbling down, try adding the correct stance." She showed him how low he should get, where to station his feet.
With every new skill she taught, his skills got better. He was able to mimic each and every one of her movements, almost perfectly. Before they knew it, the sky was going dark and Van's phone started buzzing. He told her to wait and he walked over to it.
"Sorry, Samantha." He looked up at her. "It's getting late and my parents want me home."
"Go home," She smiled at him. "You shouldn't keep them waiting."
"How about you?" He said as he finished packing up.
"I'm staying." Came the short and sharp reply.
"Why don-" She cut him off.
"I just don't want to go home yet, okay?" She stopped dribbling and stared at him with fire in her eyes. "I'm not going yet."
"Fine." He slung his bag over his shoulder. "Just... get home safe."
With that, he turned and walked off the court, out into the park, to disappear into the darkness. The moment that he had left her sight, she set down the ball and sat down on the ground beside the gates.
Had she been too hard on him? It was not fair of her to have snapped at him. However, she could not help it. Normally, she was able to get away without telling people anything. Yet, she knew that it would not go by with Van that easily. She may not have known him very well, but she could tell that it would end up in her telling him her truth. The truth she had kept secret for so long.
