brutal
I had never gotten up so early for school in my life. In fact, I actually woke up before my alarm clock. Excitement buzzed through me as I rushed to my dressing room, eager to pick out a cute outfit for the day. For once, I decided to put on makeup. Usually, I avoided it because I was always playing sports and didn't want to deal with a combination of sweat and mascara running down my face. But today felt different. Today, I wanted to look my best. I carefully applied a touch of foundation, a sweep of mascara, and a hint of lip gloss, feeling a thrill as I saw the transformation in the mirror.
My mind was racing. I really wanted to see Jalen. I didn't want our kiss to be just a one-off thing. I wanted it to be the start of something permanent. I wanted him to smother my entire body with kisses, to leave marks all over me. I wanted him—every part of him.
I decided on a cropped ribbed tank top that exposed a tiny part of my belly button, paired with high-waisted mom jeans and my purple high-top Converse sneakers. To complete the look, I added some retro-style glasses.
With a spring in my step, I headed downstairs for breakfast. My dad noticed my outfit and raised an eyebrow but offered a warm smile.
"You're in a cheerful mood today. Did One Direction get back together?"
"I wish. I don't think I would have enough energy to pour me some cereal."
My dad suddenly handed me the newspaper from the Miami-Herald. "That's a good picture they took of you."
My interview had finally printed. That picture I did take was really good, might have to make it my profile pic on Instagram.
**Hurricane on the Rise: Bethany Ramirez Shines Both On and Off the Court**
Kind of a corny title, but I let it slide. I decided to read the article.
"Bethany Ramirez, a senior at Palmetto High School, is making waves both on the basketball court and in her community. Known affectionately as "Bethany Buckets" for her impressive scoring ability, Ramirez has quickly become one of the top women's basketball players in the country. Her skills have earned her a scholarship to the University of Miami, where she will continue her academic and athletic career."
Solid first article. I actually was enjoying the read.
"Ramirez's journey to becoming a McDonald's All-American and the 3rd best women's player in the nation is a testament to her dedication and hard work. Standing at an impressive 6 feet, her presence on the court is undeniable. Whether she is driving to the basket or chunking up three-pointers, Ramirez's talent is matched only by her relentless drive and passion for the game."
"It's a good little article. I'll hang it up with the rest," my dad said.
"For the last two summers, Ramirez had the honor of representing Team USA, an experience that further honed and solidified her status as a premier player. Competing against some of the best talent from around the world, she showcased her versatility and athleticism, earning praise from coaches and teammates alike."
"Her journey, however, has not been without its challenges. Bethany's determination and resilience have been tested repeatedly, particularly with tough playoff losses to rival Spanish River and former AAU teammate Lexi Lincoln. Yet, each setback has only fueled her drive to improve and succeed.
'Playing against teams like Spanish River and players like Lexi has been tough,' Bethany admits. 'But it's also been a huge learning experience. Every game, loss, win, teaches me something new. I'm constantly pushing myself to be better.'
I still can't believe I brought up Lexi in my interview, but it felt necessary. For the past four years, everyone who follows high school sports has constantly compared us. While it may seem like a thorn in my side, it's something I've learned to live with. Our story of former teammates becoming competitive rivals is compelling, a narrative that will undoubtedly attract readers on the internet.
"Bethany's hard work and dedication extend beyond the court. She's an active member of her community, volunteering at locally youth basketball clinics and participating in numerous charity events. Her ultimate goal, she shares, is to win a state championship with her team this year. 'It's been a dream of mine since freshman year. I believe in my team, and I know we have what it takes to make it happen."
"Bethany Ramirez is not just an exceptional athlete; she's an inspiring young women who embodies the spirit of her community. With her eyes set on a state championship and bright future ahead, there's no doubt that 'Bethany Buckets' will continue draining shots on and off the court."
I read through the entire article, feeling a swell of pride as I absorbed the words written about me. It was surreal to see my journey and accomplishments captured in print for the world to see. Knowing that my hard work and dedication were being recognized was incredibly gratifying. As I finished reading, a sense of gratitude washed over me, knowing that I had the support of my community and teammates behind me. It was a reminder of how far I had come and the bright future that lay ahead.
"That was pretty dope," I said, grinning.
"You deserve it," my dad nodding approvingly.
The honking of Emma's car echoed off my kitchen walls as I stepped outside. The morning sun felt brighter, more hopeful, casting a warm glow over the neighborhood. I hoped in her car and we drove off to school.
The drive to school was filled with our usual chatter and laughter. As we arrived at school, I could barely contain my excitement. I quickly made my way to my locker, my heart racing with anticipation. Pretending to rummage through my books, I kept a watchful eye on the hallway, eagerly awaiting Jalen's arrival.
Minutes felt like hours as I waited, the anticipation building with each passing moment. Finally, I caught sight of him walking down the hallway, his presence filling the space with an electric energy. With a rush of adrenaline, I abandoned my locker and casually leaned against the row of lockers adjacent to mine, feigning nonchalance as I waited for him to draw near.
As he approached, my heart skipped a beat, and a surge of nervous excitement coursed through me. I tried to play it cool, but I was literally shaking in my shoes. I felt the colors were surrounding me when we kissed on Friday. The memories were already starting to take over my body.
Suddenly, he walked past me, and our eyes met. In that brief moment, he flashed me that gorgeous smile, sending a flutter of butterflies through my stomach.
"Hey, Bethany," he greeted me as he walked past. His acknowledgment sent a surge of happiness through me.
As if in a trance, I watched him walk away, feeling a rush of emotions coursing through me. But suddenly, a sharp smack across my face brought me back to reality.
"Snap back to reality! Oh, there's goes Bethany!" Emma says as her hand made hard contact with my face.
"That fucking hurt Emma," I said rubbing my cheek.
I couldn't help but glare at her, feeling a mixture of irritation and embarrassment. Emma just grinned mischievously, clearly enjoying the moment.
"Sorry, not sorry," she replied with a playful shrug. "But hey, it worked. You were lookin' like the kid in Charlie in the Chocolate Factory when say that chocolate filled river."
I rolled my eyes, trying to shake off the sting of her slap. "Yeah, yeah, whatever. Let's just get to class."
"You were zoned the fuck out. Your Jalen disease is gettin' worse and worse by the day."
"We kissed."
Emma's eyes widened in surprise. "Uhh...Bitch? Why the fuck you aint tellin' me? When are where the fuck was I?"
I chuckled, feeling a rush of excitement as I recounted the events from Friday. "It was at the kickback. We ended up taking a walk and... well, one thing led to another."
Emma squealed with delight, practically bouncing with excitement. "You bitch. I'm so happy for you."
I smiled, feeling a warmth spread through me at her enthusiasm. Despite her playful teasing, Emma was genuinely happy for me, and I couldn't help but feel grateful for her friendship. As we reached our classroom door, I couldn't resist adding, "And for the record, it's not a 'disease.' It's called having a crush."
Emma laughed, giving me a playful shove. "Whatever you say, Bethany."
We sat down at our desks.
"So, what's your next move on how to get Jalen to fall for you?"
I chuckled at Emma's question, shaking my head slightly. "I don't know, Em. I'm just taking things one step at a time."
Emma raised an eyebrow, her expression teasing. "Finding a way to talk to him when not under the influence is a great way to begin."
I sighed, leaning back in my chair. "Honestly, I have no idea. Clearly I can't be myself around him. I can't even create words around him while not drinking or smoking weed."
Emma grinned, nudging my shoulder. "Well, if being yourself includes making him laugh and stealing kisses I'd say you're doing just fine."
Emma pulled out her "To Die" List. "Check it. You can do of the things of here."
I noticed that Emma had most of her list already checked out.
"Girl. What the fuck? How you almost half way done?"
Emma grinned proudly, tapping her pen against the paper. "You know me, always on a mission."
I shook my head in amazement. "Seriously, though. How did you manage to check off almost half the list already?"
Emma shrugged, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "I'm just efficient like that. Plus, life's too short to wait around for things to happen. And... I did some with Jeremiah yesterday."
I couldn't argue with that logic. "Well... I guess I'm happy if you're happy.
Emma nudged me playfully. "Thanks Buckets. So, which item are you gonna tackle first? Which item you gonna tackle with Jalennnn?"
I scanned the list, feeling a surge of determination. "Snorkeling with Jalen would be fun. I love to party with him til sunrise. Dinner would be nice."
Emma pondered for a moment before grinning. "Why not do all?"
I laughed, feeling a sense of excitement building within me. "You know what? Why not? Fuck it."
I sat there with a smile on my head thinking of my future plans with Jalen.
Hours had passed, and with anticipation bubbling inside me, I made my way to Econ class. As I settled into my desk, I couldn't help but keep an eye out for Jalen, eagerly awaiting the moment he would take the seat in front of me. With a quick glance in my phone's camera, I checked my hair and makeup, ensuring everything looked perfect for when he arrived.
As the seconds ticked by, walking through the classroom door, and there he was—Jalen. I did my best to avoid direct eye contact, but I could feel his gaze lingering on me. With a subtle glance, I noticed the hint of a smile playing on his lips. He settled into the desk in front of mine, effortlessly pulling out his laptop.
I couldn't resist stealing a peek at what he was working on, hoping for some clue about his interests or hobbies. However, the bell interrupted my silent investigation, signaling the start of class. With a sigh, I reluctantly shifted my focus to the lesson ahead.
After a quick lesson, Jalen turned around and looked at me. It was abrupt but I welcomed it.
"Sup Bethany."
"Hi." I said with a soft voice.
"Did you get the assignment?" he asked, leaning back in his chair.
"Yeah, I think so. If you want, you can just look off my notes." I offered, trying to keep my voice steady despite the flutter in my stomach.
"That's dope. I'll write it in my own words," he replied, flashing me that charming smile again.
"No problem."
My heart raced as I asked him out, my words stumbling over each other in my rush to get them out. "Hey, um, do you maybeeeee want to hang out... on Saturday? We could get lunch or something," I blurted out, feeling a rush of nerves.
Jalen's smile widened. "Yeah, I'd like that. Lunch sounds good."
"Great!" I said, trying to play it cool even though my heart was racing.
Jalen nodded, his eyes sparkling. "Looking forward to it."
I try to tuck my smile into my shoulder. I was excited.
The final bell rang for the day, and I watched as Jalen grabbed his stuff and walked out of the classroom. I followed behind him with a giant smile on my face, trying to hold it together. Lost in my thoughts, I failed to notice Reina walking towards me. The collision was inevitable. I stumbled backward, nearly dropping my books.
"What the fuck Bethany!" Reina snapped, irritation flashing in her eyes.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean it," I stammered, trying to regain my composure.
"It's fine," she retorted before brushing past me.
I watched her go, feeling a twinge of annoyance.
