Comet
You were a comet in my life
briefly blazing by
Ethereal emerald streaks, sparkling aquamarine
lit up our skies
Of course, I'll never forget you
A comet only passes by once a blue moon
I am afraid to become starstruck and burned,
becoming ashes at your touch
Rare beauty to behold
Once in a decade
But then you faded away, illusions decayed
Of what could have been
That was my earliest conception of destiny
I mused and dreamt forever of a moment
when this distance would someday close
And you swore and promised this was true
You, you, it had always been you
Me, it had always been me
Us, we always wanted it to be us
Faintly, quietly, innocently, but it could never be
You were out of this world
That beautifully intricate cosmic soul hardened by life
Survival is a word we both know well
Written into my pages, hidden behind our faces
Although we were from different spheres,
for a moment confessions felt freeing, a distraction
oxygen no longer seemed fleeting
You were a planet, carelessly calling for a
Regression to the renaissance
You believed, as the young Earth once did, you
were the center of the universe
But I couldn't be the moon orbiting your world
You bought a telescope to become illuminated by the whole of the moon
But you never adjusted the scope to study the craters
Desiring to know my story,
The celestial phenomenon as it is now
But never asking about its history, the destruction, the pain, the beauty of creation
Unpredictability and escapability
A moment turned into another treasured memory
Once held and forever lost to the paths that won't be crossed
I will admire you from a safe distance
Just as you do
when we look up together
at the same moon
