Chapter 21: 'Papers Please'

That night instead of returning to the kennel Anya spent the night out in the 'dog park' under the moon and stars, no longer did she want to be stuck in the confined area of her kennel.

The little Cizla pup that she had made friends with, was adopted just a few hours later leaving Anya alone with her thoughts once again.

Looking up to the clear night sky she asked for forgiveness from the Moon and Stars, for what she had done to Parker, for breaking pack law and for being caught in her wolf form. She asked them to accept her back into their protection, and almost instantly after she felt at ease, as if her worries had been lifted momentarily, lifting her head she howled lightly, letting her wolf voice carry in the wind.

Gillian watched from the office, staring through the window into the exercise area where the strange wolf-dog sat howling. Sighing Gillian looked once again at the computer screen, just waiting for someone to call or email about Shadow. There had received hundreds of inquires into rehoming the beaten up 'wolf-hybrid' but Gillian was determined to find this dogs owner, she just knew there was someone out there wanting her home, she defiantly wasn't a typical stray.

"Gillian, what are you still doing here, its 10.30pm you should be home" Andrew, one of the vets questioned as he walked into the office area after seeing to the hospital inpatient. Gillian looked up at Andrew and shrugged, "I couldn't sleep, so I thought I could at least do some work here".

Andrew rolled his eyes, grabbing his car keys as he did so, "It's about that RTA dog isn't it?" he asked and Gillian nodded, "Just looked at her Andy, there is something about her, her eyes, those blue eyes, it's like she's staring into my soul, there just so... human".

Rubbing her shoulder Andrew looked out the window at the howling wolf-dog and sighed deeply, "You need to get some sleep Gill, your sleep deprived, no one will be calling at this time of night, you can continue the search for her tomorrow. Now come on, I'll give you a lift home".

Knowing Andrew was right Gillian clicked the power button of the computer, watching at the light from the screen faded away and grabbed her coat. Having one last look over her shoulder she caught the eyes of Shadow, staring at her from outside, "I'll find your owner, I promise".
-~-
"I'm sorry Sir but since you have no identification of your ownership to Shadow, we can't not release her to you" Gillian said for the sixth time today and it was only lunch time. The gentleman that stood in front of her groaned and left without a second word, sighing Gillian slumped down on the reception seats and cupped her head in her hands, "Why is it never simple?" she questioned.

"People will do anything to get there hands on a pretty and unusual dog" Julie said from behind the reception desk pushing her thin framed glasses up her nose.

Gillian got to her feet and walked over to the computer on the other side of the room, "Fingers crossed it won't be long before her real owner steps forward, I don't think I can take much more of these fakers".

"This is ridiculous!" Smith growled as Ross and Trott tried desperately to pin the large brown wolf to the floor so they put a collar around his neck.

"For fuck sake mate, just sit still!" Ross shouted just as Trott managed to click the collar into place.

Smith jumped to his paws and shook the collar around his neck making him feel uncomfortable, yes he had the necklace he got from Anya around his neck but a thick bulky collar made him feel like a dog, a pet.

"Suits you mate" Trott chuckled which got a growl from Smith, "Sit Smith, oh what a good boy" Ross teased patting Smith's head, nearly losing a finger in the process.

"Ready to go?" Hannah asked as she entered the office to find the two sirs laughing, a very unimpressed Smith glaring at them with his golden eyes, the bright green collar around his neck.

"Tell them to stop laughing, I feel stupid enough without them adding to it" Smith growled, only Hannah hearing the wolf's plea due to her Alpha female status.

"Guys, how would you two feel if you were the ones with collars on? Hmm?" Hannah scolded Trott and Ross, making the two stop laughing and look at their feet, "That's what I thought, now let's get going" she said holding up two leads and another collar.

But as she went to leave the office she stopped, "Oh one more thing" she said pulling out two name tags, in the shape of bones.

"You can't be serious" Smith groaned as Hannah attached the tag to his collar, glancing down he looked at the name that had be deciding on.

"Ares, huhh, Guess it could be worse" he sighed following Hannah down the corridor and out the office.

"Come here girl, Come here Shadow" One of older nurses called over to Anya but she ignored her, however the nurse, by the name of Susan, seemed adamant that she was going to take her a walk and Anya, well, she didn't want to be towed around on the other end of a lead so she could do her business.

Rolling her eyes she took another step away from Susan as she kept trying to get close to her, attempting to 'lasso' her with a slip lead. Susan was an awful nurse, she was a lot rougher than Gillian and the other nurses, Anya had done her best to avoid the damn woman during her stay.

"Oh come here you stupid dog" Susan shouted loosing her patience with Anya's stubbornness.

"I'll show you stupid dog" Anya growled taking off towards a tree, Susan running after her. Ducking and dodging Anya avoided the branches which Susan didn't, the nurse running head first into a thick branch causing her nose to bleed.

"Ahhh! Fuck!" she swore running off, holding her bloody nose as she did so.

Chucking to herself Anya lay down in the grass catching her breath after the chase, "At least there is some form of entertainment here" she said to herself closing her eyes.

Gillian returned to reception after receiving a call that another someone had come to claim Shadow, sadly her hopes weren't high after the amount of fakers she had turned away already today.

"So who is it this time?" she asked Julie as she walked out into the waiting area. Julie turned in her chair a huge grin on her face and pointed to the corner of the room were a tall blond woman sat, another pretty face preparing to lie to get her hands on Shadow, however Gillian's mood instantly changed when she seen the creature at the ladies feet.

There sat a large wolflike dog, very similar to Shadow, however his deep brown fur was matched by a pair of golden eyes unlike like Shadow's pure blue eyes. He was huge, probably matching the size of the largest St. Bernard.

However what really excited Gillian was the green woven band on the dog's right paw, all the points adding up.

Gillian chuckled to herself at how unimpressed the large dog looked, the glare that he would give anyone or any dog that try to go near him.

Gillian's then refocused on the woman who held the large wolf-dogs lead as well as another green collar and matching lead.

Taking a deep breath Gillian grabbed a clipboard and pen and walked over to the woman, "Hello, I'm Gillian, I'm one of the nurses here and have been taking care of Shadow during her time with us, would like to come with me to one of the consulting rooms so we can talk?" she said earning a nod from the woman as she led her into one of the smaller, more quiet rooms.

"Hello, I'm Hannah Rutherford" Hannah introduced herself once she had followed the nurse into the smaller room, "The dog you call Shadow, I believe she is my dog Athena" Hannah began and the nurse nodded, "Do you have any vaccination records, or breeder papers that would link her to you?" she asked and Hannah shook her head.

"Sadly not, we lost her papers when we moved here from Germany, however I do have her collar which came undone when she took off. You see, we were out walking when she got spooked by a plane" Hannah explained and Gillian took a note of the story on her clipboard.

"How long ago was this?" Gillian asked, determined to make sure that Shadow, or Athena was going to the right home.

"About a month ago, we though we had lost her forever, we were so relieved when we seen her on the Facebook page, however we were also pretty distraught by the shape she was in" Hannah continued the agreed story, which seemed to be working

"Oh for god sake, hurry up already! I know Anya's here" Smith growled making Hannah kick him slightly as he whined at her feet.

Gillian sighed, placing down her clipboard and got down on the floor to look at the other wolf-dog, "Hey boy" she said sweetly and Smith withdrew as she tried to stroke him.

"If she pets me I swear to god" Smith growled and Hannah yanked on his lead to tell him to behave.

Getting back to her feet Gillian smiled, "Well I.." but she was interrupted by Susan barging into the room.

She looked furious, toilet roll shoved up her nose to stop some sort of nose bleed, "That damn dog did this!" she swore ignoring the fact that Gillian was busy talking with Hannah.

"Excuse me Susan I'm busy with Miss Rutherford here, I believe she's Shadow's owner" Gillian said and Susan spun round to look at Hannah, giving her a right look up and down then looked at Smith who silently growled at this rude woman.

"Does she have papers?" Susan asked disapprovingly, "No but..." Gillian started but Susan instantly interrupted, "No papers, no dog".

"But Susan..." Gillian tried again but Susan just stared at her, "You know RSPCA policy, no papers, no dog" she said bluntly then turned to Hannah, "Well Miss Rutherford you can leave now".

Hannah looked bewildered at the rude nurse who was now ushering her and Smith out the consult room and towards the door, "But she's my dog!" Hannah practically shouted, tears in her eyes.

Gillian could seen the tears but she didn't know what to do, she watched as the wolf-dog Hannah had started to howl, a howl that almost sounded like shouting, what was he saying?

"ANYA! AURORA!"
Anya jumped up from her position in the dog park at the sound of Smith's voice calling from inside the building, but how?

"ANYA! AURORA!"
"No Smith I'm here! I'm here!" Anya howled back running over to were Smith's voice was coming from, but how was she going to get in the building?

"Dinner!" a volunteer shouted from one of the side entrances, holding many bowls of dog food in his hands. Taking the chance Anya sprinted over the lad and dove beneath his feet, knocking him over in the process.

"Sorry!" she shouted but she couldn't stop as she ran along the corridor in the direction of the reception area were Smith was calling her.
She wasn't about to let Smith go, not this time.
-~-
"Susan, let Miss Rutherford explain" Gillian tried desperately to get her colleague to change her view while she continued to try to force Hannah to leave as her wolf-dog continued to howl.

"Shadow!" Gillian heard Julie shout in panic. Turning instantly the nurse watched as Shadow ran down the corridor and into the waiting room, her eyes full of tears as she caught sight of the other wolf-dog.

Susan was knocked from her feet as Shadow practically tackled the other wolf-dog, the two canines whining and yelping with happiness, nuzzling each other's necks and licking each others muzzles.

Gillian chuckled watching the two wolf hybrids, then turned to Susan who had just gotten back to her feet, "I think that's more proof than any piece of paper" she said before turning to look at Hannah who had tears running down her face.

"Oh Miss, are you alright?" Gillian asked in worry but Hannah smiled, "Happy tears, they are happy tears, we finally found her" Hannah said before wrapping her arms around Gillian, "Thank you".

Gillian smiled, she had finally found Shadow's family.
