CHAPTER NINE
Kali hated grocery shopping. And she hated it even more now that prices had seemingly sky rocketed since the last time she was in the shop but she refused to complain about it. At least she wasn't going to complain to anyone about it with the exception of Jschlatt. Then again he heard all of his complaints and was used to hearing hers. The duo just really liked to complain even over the smallest things but both refused to do it to anyone except each other. They were like each others little support people but who were separated by multiple states and lived in different time zones.
Kali looked down at her phone where she had been switching between Snapchatting with Schlatt and checking the list which she had been bullied into making while she was at her apartment. It had been Schlatt who told her that if she didn't make a list, she would either forget something and be pissed about it when she got home or she would find stuff and spend far too much. He was right so Kali for once agreed and created a list.
"Lucky Charms," Kali mumbled under her breath as she walked down the huge isle filled with colorful boxes. Some of the brands in the isle she swore people never bought, she was left wondering how those companies were still in business. The girl kept walking past the random boxes, her eyes scanning over each box, searching for red one she wanted. When she found it a frown appeared on her face. "Who the fuck puts Lucky Charms on the top shelf?" Kali cursed as she looked up at the box, putting down the basket she had gotten and deciding to start her climbing mission.
Kali wasn't short, she was actually the average height for American girls her age but it seemed like whoever had put the boxes where they were didn't think that she needed the specific kind of cereal. As she stepped onto the first shelf and started to reach she mumbled a few more curses because don't children eat the shit? Why would they put it so high up?
"Probably talk workers." A newly familiar voice spoke up behind her and she glanced over her shoulder to see a dirty blonde boy with green eyes looking at her. Kali tilted her head a little with an annoyed huff as she looked up at the box again, still attempting to reach it but the box was just outside of her reach.
"If all tall workers are fucking stupid then sure," Kali responded as she looked up at the box before deciding she could probably just climb up one more shelf. Surely there was nothing that could go wrong if she could just barely reach the box. She just needed to grab it by her finger tips.
"Be careful," The guy her she said quickly and moved to step towards her. It just so happened that as he said that, Kali missed her step and he placed a careful hand on her back as she literally fell into him. She felt her face burn with embarrassment as he caught her and he gave her a small smile as he set her down on her feet properly.
"Thanks." Kali muttered just loud enough for him to hear as he reached up to grab the box for the girl and he handed it to her. Her eyes stayed locked on the floor at how stupid she was for not just asking for help in the first place and almost dying or something.
"You," The boy spoke up and Kali's eyes moved to him, confused as to why he hadn't walked away yet. He bent down and picked up her basket, offering it to her and Kali took it from his hands. "Uhm, you work at the dinner, right?" He asked as his hand lingered on the basket and Kali nodded a little.
"Yeah," Kali said as she met his green eyes and she had to admit to herself that they were very pretty. In fact the guy in front of her was good looking in her opinion and his gaze stayed locked on her as she spoke. "You're the guy who yelled at the other guys for me, yeah?" She asked the guy, like him already knowing the answer and a small laugh came from him.
"That'd be me." The blond laughed, a small blush crossing his face at the memory and Kali felt slightly bad for snapping at him. She had been stressed already and didn't like accepting help, it was something she was trying to do more but she was so used to being able to only rely on herself or Schlatt so it felt weird. "I'm Clay."
"Kali," The girl introduced herself as she felt her phone buzz in her pocket, knowing that Schlatt planned on blowing up her phone as she had stopped responding to him. "But you know that." She added, teasing him slightly to try and remove the awkwardness from between the two of them.
"Uhm," Clay paused, seeming to have something on his mind but he wasn't sure how to say it. Kali looked up at him with curious eyes and he felt his face warm up even more, feeling his own phone go off in his pocket. He knew Sapnap and George were in the car, he had been sent in for fruit loops after Sapnap had gotten upset about them not having the cereal for whatever reason. He hadn't expected to see the pretty girl from the dinner at the shop. "Random question but I was wondering if I could have your number?" Clay asked, trying to keep his voice steady as he looked at her, trying to read her emotions.
"My number." Kali repeated as she looked up at him.
"You can totally say no!" Clay said quickly when he realized how that may have sounded as he had just learned her name. He raised his hands a little in a sign to show that he wasn't going to push her for a yes or no. "I'm fine with that." He told her, his face burning out of embarrassment and he met Kali's eyes with his heart racing in his chest.
"I mean sure." Kali said after a second or two with a small shrug and a smile reappeared on Clay's face, a weight lifted off of his chest as she gave him a small smile. "Here, give me your phone." She held her hand out and he didn't hesitate to unlock it and hand to her where she quickly typed in her number before handing it back to him.
"Have a good night Kali," Clay grinned as she handed him his phone back and he slipped it back into the back pocket of his jeans. He made a mental note to text her later in the evening.
"Thanks, you too Clay." The girl smiled back before she watched the tall blonde make his way down the isle towards the cash registers while she continued with her shopping.
