Part 7
-Your Pov-
You sit at the table across from Barbara and Trevor, and then the two of them smile at you and Margaret, and the two of you sit around, making a bit of small talk as you wait for a waiter. Right now, it's the simple common courtesy questions, like asking how everyone's day is going, and then a little bit of conversation about how the weather is nice, and then the things you guys want to eat when the time comes, and then eventually, all of you go to sitting in a bit of an awkward silence. The double date had been Barbara's idea, she wanted to get to know Margaret, and she had suggested you get to know Trevor better. Despite the nice idea behind it,Margaret had no idea who anyone at Roosterteeth was, making any conversation about that awkward, and then you didn't know much about Trevor.
And so, all of you sat in a bit of an awkward silence, and then the waiter came thankfully, and all of you placed in your orders. The waiters thanked you, and then left to prepare it, and then the silence sat back in. Idly, you noted to yourself how if it were just you and Barbara, then you would have been playing a version of chess with the condiments, but you had no idea if Trevor knew about the game, and you knew Margaret would probably find it stupid, and yell at the both of you for it.
Barbara gave you a smile out of the corner of her mouth, letting you know she was glad things had gotten to a point where the two of you could be in other relationships, and also that she also remembered the condiment game, and wanted to play it right now. As the two of you exchanged the look, Trevor began one of his stories, and then you felt Margaret step on your foot, to snap you out of your daze, and then you held in a wince of pain, not wanting to draw attention to yourself.
" So, how did the two of you meet," asks Trevor when he finishes his stories, desperate to have anything to talk about at all, and then you and Margaret both go to tell the story about how you had met at the bar, but then she cuts you off with a look, and then you sigh to let her tell the story. She then retells how the two of you met at the bar, leaving out the bit about how you had only been there because of Barbara an Trevor.
She finishes the story, and then you nod every so often in agreement, and then Trevor and Barbara both nod when the story finishes, and then talk a bit about how they had seen each other around the office, and then he was dared to ask her out since he kept chickening out. You feign polite interest, and then you thank God when the food comes to give you something to do other than sit in awkward silence.
All four of you begin to eat, and then you find yourself talking more with Barbara than with anyone else at the table, though that doesn't come with a surprise. The two of you have known each other the longest out of anyone, and have the most common ground. Trevor shrugs like he expected this to happen, and doesn't seem too bothered by this, but every time it comes up, you can tell Margaret is getting angrier with you. Each time you talk to Barbara, she either squeezes your hand to the point it hurts, or steps on your foot.
When the awkward date ends, all of you go through the polite sayings that you want to do that again sometime, and then go your separate ways after some polite hugs, and then you go to drop Margaret off at her house, and the two of you sit in a strained silence the entire drive, although it isn't difficult for you to know just how angry she was. When the two of you end up in a traffic jam, she begins to let out her anger, yelling at you.
You manage to tune out most of what she's yelling about, her temper being something you're used to at this point. Every so often, you nod to pretend you're listening, and then you agree to something. As far as you can tell, this time she's angry because you spent more time talking with Barbara than her at the date, which actually was fair enough. Even if you had known Barbara for longer, you needed to make an effort to get to know your girlfriend better and get to a point when you could have conversations like that easier.
Your car eventually pulls up at her house, and then you walk with her to the stairs, and then she simply glares at you, even when you apologize. She looks at you like she's considering something for a few moments, and then she nods to herself, and you look at her in confusion, wondering what conclusion it was she came to. You wait for a few moments, and then next thing you know, she slugs you in the face, and you see blood fly from your nose. Before you can ask what that was about, she goes into the house, slamming the door behind you.
Blood keeps dripping from your nose, and then the pain sets in and you go into your car, and then find a tissue and put it into your nose to stop the bleeding, but the pain still throbs in your nose, and you think about it on the drive home. The pain eventually gets to much for you, and then you stop the car to recover, and then think about how much it hurts, and how shocked you are by this. Sure, Margaret may have been angry, but she wasn't abusive...except she was. You sat there in the car, wondering to yourself what this meant.
( let me know what you thought)
