Chapter 5

"Hmmm" Crosby pursed his lips, "I don't know how I didn't wake up to someone here, and why not just kill me?"

"I don't know Crosby, I was asleep on watch."

"Do you know what type of poison it might  be?"

It was Jordans turn to think, "it tasted metallic, I'd say its Yellow bellied viper poison, or from the back of the Porallic lizard."

"Those are rare and difficult poisons to get, must be someone important."

"Think it's a bounty hunter or something?"

"Yeah, that's probably why, when he didn't see you in camp, he probably poisoned the water as a back up plan, and got away as fast as possible to escape being seen by you who probably assumed you were on watch."

"Which I was."

"And what a great job you did."

Jordan scowled but didn't argue. "What are we doing now?"

"Well, since your water is poisoned, it would be smart to assume mine is poisoned too, so we need more water, and without any water there's no way we'll make it in time, we would die of dehydration."

"Is there any water near us? Lakes? Rivers?"

"No, but there is one way to get water."

"How?"

Crosby eyes glinted dangerously, the person who tried to kill us with the poison and killing the horse- they probably are still around here in case their attempt failed. So they obviously have water..."

"You want to catch the killer." Jordan said.

"Were going to catch the killer." Crosby agreed.

The trap was set.

Crosby waited in the grassy plains wearing came, hidden in the darkness of night. While Jordan pretended to sleep in the tent, the plan was simple, Crosby would wait for the person to come and try to kill Jordan, then he would pop out and shoot him, they wanted to interrogate him first, but if it came down to a gun fight, there were no guarantees.

They needed the water, Crosbys second job was to find out what direction the assassin came, so even if they killed him they could find the persons camp which would hopefully have some water.

Of course there was the chance that the assassin wouldn't come at all that night, but if he didn't, Jordan would be most likely dead by then. His throat was already parched with no water all day. They had spent the day planning all the different scenarios of when the assassin came.

Jordan was nervous, he couldn't see the entrance to the tent and was constantly worried of a sudden gun shot, and pain rippling through his body, but he trusted Crosby.

He didn't know what time the assassin would come either, it could be in the next five minutes or in five hours, or not at all. And how he was going to stay awake he still didn't know, he couldn't even stay awake during watch.

Despite his worrying, Jordan soon fell asleep at around twelve o'clock. He dreamed about the very night he first got arrested and turned into an outlaw, before it he had been a petty their, then he blew up into a whole new level. The night he had stolen the giant ruby.

He dreamed of when he had burned the branch and set off the smoke alarm. The dream continued all the way to when he had grabbed the ruby, he grabbed it and shoved it in his bag, and then he slipped. And everything went black when he broke the laser above his head.

Jordan woke up sweating. He shivered in the cold night and wiped the sweat off his forehead. He didn't know what had woken him up. He lied there silently in the cold night for a few minutes. He wrapped himself in his sleeping bag and tried to warm up. He heard footsteps.

They stalked silently around from the back of the tent. He heard the silent breaths of the person outside the tent. Where was Crosby?

He silently slipped the pistol from his pocket and aimed it at the entrance to the tent, turning his body for a better view. The sleeping bag moved noisily and the footsteps stopped. They were outside the entrance. Jordan held his breath. The flap opened slightly and he fired a shot. Suddenly whoever it was stormed in like lightning, they raised their gun but when he saw him the intruder gasped, instead he slammed the butt of he gun into my head.

Darkness swallowed me whole.

"Are you okay?" Someone asked Jordan.

He kept his eyes closed. He didn't want to see the bullet.

"Jordan, wake up." It was Crosby, I immediately opened my eyes.

There he was, standing with the person who had hit me with the gun. It was a girl. The girl stood there as if last night hadn't happened at all. She held her gun as if she were surrounded by friends.

Crosby as usual was right too the point. "We need to talk."
