Part 27

Mark

"Mark, stay with Yugyeom." Jinyoung yelled, his hand going to his hip, where a dagger was placed. My eyes widened,"Are you insane? You can't go up there alone!" He sighed, pulling out the weapon,"I'm the most experienced out of all of us, and the most capable right now." Jinyoung pointed out, voice shaking, then added,"And BamBam could be fighting for his life right now, alone." He immediately ran from the room, leaving me with Yugyeom, who was getting paler by the second. I bit my lip angrily, torn between worry and reason. It was a good idea for me to stay with Yugyeom, to protect him and keep him alive. But what if something terrible happened to Jinyoung and BamBam, what if they died when I could have done something.

Then I reminded myself, what if Yugyeom died because I left? "Mark." The groan woke me from my thoughts. I quickly fell down beside my friend,"What is it? Are you in pain? I can get you something, like water or food." Idiot how are you suppose to do that when there are people breaking into the freakin house! Yugyeom shook his head,"Go to Junior, Mark." I furrowed my eyebrows in co fusion,"Great now you are going insane! I can't leave you here alone with villagers trying to kill us. What if you-" My throat seemed to close around the unsaid word, Yugyeom's face softened,"I'm not getting better. You should go, they need you more than I do." A thud came from the second floor. I found myself trembling, head shaking left to right over and over,"No, you can still improve and like Jinyoung, I mean Junior, oh my god I'm a mess." My hands went to pull angrily at my hair. I had been doing so well at bottling my emotions as we tried to help Yugyeom. Now it felt like everything was finally falling apart,"I can't do this."

A hand rested itself on my head,"Mark, calm down. Look at me." I hadn't even realized my eyes were shut until they opened to lock with his sad brown ones, the both of us gasping for air,"Waste your energy on someone who isn't going to die anyways. Go save my family," Tears began to fall down his cheeks,"for me." My shoulders tensed, my body going rigid,"No Yugyeom don't talk like that-" Yugyeom's voice cracked as he screamed at me to leave,"Don't let BamBam die because of me Mark!" I quickly got off the floor, shocked by the sadness and regret behind his words. Spotting a knife on Yugyeom's belt I hesitantly picked it up,"I'll go, but this wasn't your fault."

The dying boy in front of me gave a weak smile,"Go help them, Yi en." My jaw went slack for a second in shock as Yugyeom closed his eyes. The rise and fall of his chest let me know he wasn't gone just yet. I gulped down the fear and made my way towards the stairs. The further I got the more I heard. Grunts and groans, then a gasp,"BamBam!" Jinyoung's voice was carried down the hallway. I forced my legs to move faster, into a run. They were still sore from training the day before. His voice had come from BamBam's bedroom, at the end of the hall. Pushing the door open I was surprised to see a body on the floor. A body I didn't recognize. Commoner. The person got to their feet and turned at the sound of my footsteps. The villager was a woman. She stepped forward, a shining dagger in her hand. I quickly got into a defensive position, thinking back to all my training with Yugyeom and Jinyoung. Her eyes pinned on my right shoulder. I noticed the weapon was in her left hand, and her shoulders were angled away from her so called target. Trying to trick me? As she moved to stab my left side I moved forward and to the right, bringing my elbow against her chest, successfully knocking the air out of her. She stumbled back, gasping for breath. I took the opening, bringing my knife across her waist without thinking.

She dropped her weapon to hold her side in pain, giving me time to bring my right leg under both of hers. The sound of her body hitting the floor echoed throughout the room. Gulping I brought my knee over her thighs, my hands holding her wrists so she couldn't stand or attack,"Oh my god, Mark?" My head snapped to the right at the sound of the voice, along with now audible pants. There against the wall was Jinyoung and BamBam. Bam had one of his hands placed on Jinyoung's thigh, his eyes wide. It only took me a few seconds to realize why when he pulled away to reveal a red substance.

BamBam's voice was shaky, making me wonder what exactly had happened before I showed up. His mouth was shut tightly. Jinyoung looked up when Bam spoke, shoulders slumped,"That can't be right. Mark is suppose to be-" He seemed to have understood what me standing there meant as he suddenly tried to push BamBam away,"Mark you idiot what are you doing up here? I told you to stay with Yugyeom!" His legs gave way under him, Bam catching him before he hit the ground. I went to answer but he didn't want to listen,"Two stupid villagers just broke in and you leave Yugyeom defenseless!" I looked at him confused. Two villagers? But only one is.......oh. I stared down at the girl under me. Gripping my knife tighter I placed it against her throat,"How many of you are here?" I demanded. She let a sly smile fall onto her lips,"In this house, or in all the houses?" My jaw clenched as I pushed the knife closer,"In this house!"

The woman shrugged,"One." The frown on my face became deeper, my head tilting to the side,"But they saw two of you." The confusion in my voice made her laugh. The kind of laugh that makes people sick to their stomach,"Don't worry little boy, he left." She leaned up, blood now trickling down her neck,"After all, we have a whole camp to burn down." My lips parted, about to ask her what the hell she meant. Before I could she used my shock to free her wrists, pushing me off of her. My back hit the wooden floor, a grunt leaving my lips. Two hands wrapped around my shirt, one of them now holding Yugyeom's knife. I could hear BamBam calling out my name, the woman pulling me closer until our faces were inches apart. I struggled to get out of her grip. She shook her head,"You won't get anything from me, boy. I have orders." Her lips curled in a snarl. Taking the knife she brought it to her throat. As her eyes locked with mine she slid the blade across her neck, blood dripping onto me.

Her grip on my shirt loosened, the now unmoving body falling on top of me. I quickly pushed the corpse off with shaking hands, three words falling out of my mouth repeatedly,"Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god." Using my legs I pushed myself as far as possible, hands on the wall of the room before I even thought of the other two people beside me,"Mark?" Jinyoung's weak voice made me turn to him. He was now kneeling next to me, hands on my shoulders,"Mark it's okay breath, okay? Breath. We don't have time, we have to warn everyone okay? We have to make sure no one else gets hurt, okay?" Letting out a shaky breath I nodded, noticing the cloth now wrapped around Jinyoung's leg where his wound was. Looking around I couldn't find BamBam and assumed he had gone to see Yugyeom. My breath hitched. He had gone to see Yugyeom, the Yugyeom who is probably unmoving downstairs, who is probably not breathing. How can I breath when he isn't breathing because of me? The mere thought of it had me shaking again,"Jinyoung I'm so sorry. For leaving Yugyeom. He told me to, he told me to help you and, and-"

Two hands rested on my cheeks, wiping at the salty tears I hadn't even realized I was crying. I felt his eyelashes brush my closed eyelids as he kissed the corner of my mouth before resting his forehead against mine. The quick pace of my breathing slowed down to match his, he was breathing, Jinyoung was breathing,"It's okay Mark," He smiled through his own tears, and I knew in that moment that he was aware of what I had done. He was aware of who wasn't breathing anymore, and he was still smiling. Jinyoung was trying to be happy, and I knew it was for me,"it's okay." He whispered, and I returned his smile. It was small, but it was something,"We have to go now Jinyoung. We have to help everyone." He let out a breath,"I know. Let's go get Bam."

Helping each other stand we made our way towards the living room. Where BamBam had his head buried in the chest of his friend. Listening for a heart beat, waiting to feel the rise and fall of his chest. The rise and fall that never came. BamBam's cry seemed to bounce of the walls, the boys hands in fists, trying to grab at Yugyeom's shirt,"No!" Yugyeom laid still, eyes closed, hands resting at his sides. His hair was a mess, but a small curve of his lips made him appear as if he was sleeping. He was sleeping in a way, just sleeping for a very, very, long time. And all three of us knew he would never wake up,"Yugyeom wake up! Please, please, please. Yug wake up and practice defense with me. Help me with my wounds and listen to my problems. Like you always do. Smile, smile, smile again!" This time BamBam slammed his fists into his friend, punching at the unmoving body, his words spilling out in angry screams,"You can't leave me you selfish fool!" Fist after fist, punch after punch,"How could you! How could you leave when I still need you." With one last punch his legs gave way and the boy feel to the floor, sobbing,"Yugyeomie, why did you leave me? Why did you have to go? Help me Yug, I can't do this without you..."

Jinyoung moved toward his friend,"BamBam we have to go." Bam shook his head violently,"No! There is no point anymore-" Without a word Jinyoung grabbed a hold of BamBam's shirt. Bringing one hand back he slammed it across the boy's face,"Don't you ever say that!" He yelled, eyes wide open in rage,"There are people out there who are suffering. Who need help, our help. Or do you want them to end up like Yugyeom? There is always a reason to keep going, and if you don't have one you're better off dead!" Jinyoung let go off Bam's shirt, causing him to fall back onto the ground,"Come with us and save lives, or stay here knowing you did nothing for those who are going to die." He held out his hand,"You have a choice to make BamBam."

BamBam looked between the two of us, then glanced at his dead friends body,"They said they were going to burn down the camp." He spoke after awhile, voice almost a whisper. Stretching out his arm he took his friends hand, eyes shining with held back tears,"We need to get everyone out of the houses."

Yugyeom may have lasted an extra chapter cause people wanted him alive....remember okay, all these deaths were planned practically from the beginning of the book
