Dark Ages

A young Noelle was running on the streets at night; she was looking for food, anything that could give her some sort of sustenance. The child was alone, scared and terrified. The young brunette ran into the open seeing a can poking out in the snow, she ran instantly and stumbled to her feet as she hurried to grab the can.

The wind hit her like bullets, the snow she was currently sitting in chilled her to the bone, and the fallen ash tickled her nose. The young girl's mind ignored the body lying near the can, the deceased man's hollow eyes bore into her skull, waiting to be acknowledged by someone who wasn't the cause of his death.

Her hazel eyes darted across the fallen city, looking for the next place to hide as she tried to make the journey back home. Her tiny hands clung to the can as she bolted to her feet, planning her escape route but a shriek escaped her lips as a man with an axe came running at her, she instantly ran, heading in a different direction than what she had planned, the melting snow caused her to slip and crash to the ground.

Her heart pounded in her ears, whimpers were escaping her lips as she raised her hands to defend her face. The child had barely lived, the fun years of her childhood sucked away by the rebellion war and now because her stomach begged for food, she would die at the hands of a man in the exact same position as her.

A sound startled them both, giving Noelle the chance she needed to start running again, the girl hid behind a statue. She raised a hand to cover the startled sound that begged to escape her lips as she saw two blonde-haired children.

"Shh, there's a man." The brunette child whispered, pressing herself against the stone as the older-looking girl pressed her against it on the other side of her, Coriolanus glanced at the shivering girl and the lack of warm clothes she had on was appalling and made her look sicker and on the brink of death.

"Noelle!" He whispered-shouted, grabbing her hand, looking worried by the fact that his friend was in the state that she was. The two young children knew each other from their fathers, both were generals in the Capitol military and had many frequent meetings that brought the children closer together.

"Do you need help?" Coriolanus whispered Noelle shook her head, rubbing her arms to produce some heat to her body, the cold brisk wind made the chilly darkness more terrifying to the young girl and the actions of those around her made it even worse.

Noelle was unsure of what made the young boy flinch, however, the older girl's words made her think that the man was doing something that wasn't normal. Maybe what she assumed was going to happen to her happened to someone else, the two blonde children looked at the brunette girl, the small child looked unaware of her own shakiness and the growing blue on her skin became more worrisome by the minute.

Coriolanus took his coat off, wrapping it around the small girl, going against Tigris' advisement and offered a childish smile that children had that could offer support and enlightenment. Noelle gave him the can of food, clutching her stomach as looked away, she believed that two hungry children were greater than herself and that the can of food would go a long way with them both.

"Thank you." She whispered, causing the blonde boy to nod, thanking her for the can of food and took her hand as he invited her to run with them. Noelle held onto his hand tightly, hiding with them again behind another pillar, Coriolanus tugged at the sleeve of the coat he lent her and gave a childish look as she met his eyes.

"Noelle, our home is closer, you can come there. You'll be safe."

"My daddy will be mad, I shouldn't be outside even." The blonde boy looked at her worried as she took the jacket off, handed it to him and began running away. A necklace fell onto the ground, Coriolanus picked it up, burying it into his pocket and began heading home with Tigris.

Noelle made it home; she went to fiddle with her necklace, a coping habit she had when she was dealing with things that made her anxious or scared. A whimper escaped her lips as the necklace wasn't around her neck, Noelle jumped as her father appeared at the doorway, shaking in fear as he grabbed her arm and dragged her inside.

"Daddy, please you're hurting my arm."

"Good. Remember this pain when you disobey me again! You know you shouldn't leave the house." Noelle made a fatal error in talking back, trying to see him reason with her about why she left the house.

"I was just trying to find some food, Daddy... we don't have any more." Her father slapped her face, the stinging pain brought tears to her eyes, she let out a sob as he roughly grabbed her face and lowered himself to meet her eyes.

"Don't fucking talk back to me. Go to your room and don't come out." Noelle ran to her room, not wanting to receive another bruise than the one that was already forming on her face. She buried her face into her pillow, tears running down her cheeks as she clutched the pillow to give herself some comfort.

"I want mummy back." She whispered into the pillow, wishing that her mother were still alive, alive and could hold her when she was sad. Her mother made everything better, but her father became a cold and abusive man after her kind and caring mother died.

Noelle's sadness was amplified when she remembered that her necklace could be anywhere, lost forever, it was her mother's and one of the remaining things that wasn't burnt by her father when he destroyed almost everything that belonged to his deceased wife.

Once Noelle finished crying, she pushed herself out of her bed, grabbed her teddy bear to hold close to her chest and moved to the window that overlooked the once gorgeous town square. Noelle thought about the two children that she met; hoping that they were okay and found somewhere safe to be. It's all she hoped for anyone she saw outside in the cold wasteland, that they would be okay and find somewhere safe to be.

Horror filled her eyes as the statue that the three children were previously hiding behind was bombed to pieces. The square was decorated with flames, bodies that were still grasping onto the final moments of life buried beneath stone and debris.

A knock rang in her room, the young girl turned to see her father by the door, he summoned her forward and took her outside into the cold terrain. She stood outside, her father stood with another Capitol military man, her father was a General in the Capitol's army and was dealing with murdering any captured rebels.

The rebels were all lined up, some young and some old. They looked at the innocent girl, who already had tears falling down her cheeks, she knew exactly what was going to happen and didn't want to see all the people die.

"Don't take your eyes off of this. Watch them die. Watch them as we fill their bodies with bullets. You should be with them. Just watch." Noelle cried out as the two men fired their guns at the lineup of bodies. Noelle stared at her father with hatred in her eyes; it was punishment for her, a sick twisted away of added torment to put her in her place.

"I will make sure that's where you end up one day." Noelle nodded, not daring to say anything else, she got permission to go back inside and stayed in her room to avoid any other issues that were awful and traumatising.
