Nightmares

Gren grinned as he pulled his bloody hand from her chest, making a sickening squelch. He held her heart in his crimson hand. How was she still alive? Blood poured from her body in floods. She couldn't tell where he had punctured her anymore. There were so many holes and blood and pain. Yet, somehow, her vision stayed clear... and her heart kept beating. She could feel the thick warm blood oozing down her face and her hair was stiff where it had dried. The metal walls seemed to close in.

Suddenly, she snapped. Spikes of ice erupted across her skin, impaling Gren and punching through the cell walls. Ice completely coated her skin.

The guard burst through the door, sending shards of ice clattering across the frozen floor. Instead of beating her, he untied her and dragged her to her feet. She couldn't stand, but he pulled her along. Another guard came to their aid. They entered a room full of cloaked figures, more than she could count. They all stopped and stared at the newcomers. Some reached for weapons, but she lifted her head and they froze. Every single person, aside from her escorts, dropped to the ground. They weren't just unconscious. Somehow, she knew that she had killed them, all of them, without flinching.

The scene fast forwarded to her standing in a pasture with Grady at Havenfield. They were training. Suddenly, he couldn't breath. He dropped to his knees trying desperately to catch his breath. He called her name over and over. Then, everyone was there, everyone she cared about - even her parents and others who had passed. They all collapsed, groaning and coughing and pleading. She was doing this. Sophie, who was near the front, started coughing up blood. Edaline's arm snapped at an unnatural angle. The scream echoed through her mind. Fitz fought back hard enough to catch Biana as she toppled over, dead. Lihn walked steadily deeper into a raging sea.

Looking down, her hands were drenched in blood. It spread up her arms and across her torso - the blood of those she'd killed. She sensed someone behind her. Turning, she found Tam staring at the ground.

"I thought we were the same." His voice was quiet and ragged. "I thought you were just misunderstood." He glanced over at Lihn. "But I was wrong." He looked up. Blood streamed from his eyes and his nostrils. His face was pale and cold. He was dead. "You're a monster."

Valerie jolted awake, sitting bolt upright, and screamed. She couldn't catch her breath and her heart was racing. She tried to force the nightmare out of her mind, but it was burned into her eyelids. Every time she closed her eyes she saw Tam's lifeless face. Tears rolled down her cheeks, reminding her of the tears she'd seen on Fitz's face as he had cradled his sister's body.

Wylie rushed into the room, making her jump. The guard had entered her cell the same way.
He walked over to her bed and placed a calming hand on her shoulder. When she didn't freak out, he pulled her close and hugged her tightly. He rubbed her back and leaned his head against hers.

She listened to his steady heart beat; felt the even rise and fall of his chest. The warmth of his hug chased the chill from her body. Sitting there, cuddled up in her brother's arms, she fell asleep.
