New York State of Mind

Narrator's POV

"Alright, Buck. I think-" Sam stopped in his steps when he saw Wanda with her hands up to Bucky's head.

Bucky seemed to be asleep.

"What's..."

"He needed sleep, so I helped him out." Wanda said, pulling away from Bucky; who remained asleep. She walked over to Sam. "He should be good for a couple more hours."

"Hours?" Sam asked.

Wanda put her hand on Sam's shoulder. "He really needs it."

Sam looked at how soundly asleep Bucky was. "Mm." He gave her a nod.

"Mm..." Bucky moaned, blinking his eyes open. "Ah." He gasped when he couldn't sit up. "What the-"

"Easy tiger." Sam's voice filled his ears.

"Huh?" He looked around. "What?" He was in Sam's car.

"Sleep well?" Sam asked.

Bucky leaned back in his seat and looked out the window, sighing.

It wasn't long before they pulled up to their place.

Bucky unbuckled himself, getting out of the car, tired. "Wait."

"Hm?" Sam turned to him.

"Alpine. She's not at her window." Bucky said.

Sam looked at the front window where Alpine usually waited for him. "Oh, no. Not our girl."

"Not Alpine." Bucky hurried to the door and stormed in. "Alpine."

"Alpine!" Sam came in after him.

"Al-"

"She's okay."

The two of them turned to see Sharon sitting on their couch with Alpine on her lap, who soon jumped off and walked over to her dads.

"What are you doing here?" Sam asked.

"Just came to tell you two that you can start packing." She said, standing up.

"Wait, you found us a place?" Sam asked.

Bucky listened, but kept his eyes on Alpine.

"Yes. It wasn't very hard." Sharon said. "Took a couple of phone calls, but thanks to a generous donation by Ms. Potts, you two will be staying in New York." She said. "Oh. New York, New York."

"It'll be impossible to get to the compound with that traffic." Sam said.

"Not with your suit, and when you've got the tippy top suite." Sharon said.

"Top?" Bucky asked.

"Yes." Sharon nodded. "The highest one."

"Sucks to not have a suit." Sam joked.

"Won't it be easier for threats to find us in New York?" Bucky asked. "I'm not so sure I'm for that idea."

"On the contrary." Sharon said. "New York is vey big, there's thousands of people. It's the perfect place to hide."

"Not with him flying off the roof everyday." Bucky said.

"That's why you'll be carefully watched. There are eyes all over that building, just to keep you two safe. All the staff was picked by us, there are agents living amongst the people occupying the building. The security is tight." Sharon explained.

"I still don't like the idea." Bucky said.

"James, you-"

"Bucky." Bucky interrupted.

Sam watched for any sort of sudden outburst from Bucky.

Sharon and Bucky weren't exactly on good terms since the whole Zeno thing happened, and they never really cared to resolve it.

"Bucky." Sharon said. "You can't stay here." She said. "The court ruled that you are a danger to society."

"Danger my ass! There are actual people out there who want to do harm to people!"

"It's move out of here or get locked up in a maximum security prison where you are heavily guarded." Sharon said.

Bucky sighed. He looked away from Sharon. "Do they allow pets?"

Sharon looked down at Alpine. "I'm sure they can make an exception."

"Great." Sam interrupted. "Sharon why don't you go tell everyone we'll be on the way? Bucky and I will start packing."

"Mm." Sharon nodded and left the house.

"What was that?" Sam asked Bucky, who was walking away.

"You don't understand." Bucky said, running his hands down his face.

"You're doing so good, why would you let something like that get to you?"

"Because he chose her!" Bucky shouted, turning to Sam red in the face.

Sam took a second to look at him. "Bucky..."

"Every time I see her here, it's like I'm staring right at her. Peggy." Bucky said. "She took everything from me! How could he do this to me?! He can't do that to me!" He punched right through one of the walls.

"Bucky!" Sam shouted.

Alpine raced into Sam's room.

Bucky looked at his hand that had gone through the wall. He pulled it out, looking at his knuckles that were now split open. "I was only trying to help.." He said slowly falling to the ground, holding himself. "How can someone be so cruel?"

Sam walked over to Bucky, getting down to Bucky's height. "Maybe it's not her that your mad at." He said. "Maybe this isn't about her." He sat on the floor next to Bucky. "Sometimes..." He picked up a piece of the wall from the ground and messed with it. "...we feel guilty to blame someone that we were so close with because they played a very important part in our life." Sam talked, tossing the debris somewhere. "But you shouldn't because it wasn't your fault. Steve. He...he hurt you. He broke your trust, broke your heart."

Bucky opened himself up a little, listening to Sam.

Sam sighed. "And that's fucked up." He scoffed. "You have every right to be angry at Steve, but I think it would be best if you told him. You can't keep this bottled up forever." He looked at Bucky, who was hiding behind his hair. "I don't want to look at you Bucky, I want to see you. See the real you." Sam stood up, wiping his hands free from the dust of the debris. "What do you say? Let's start over." He stretched hand out for Bucky to take and was surprised when he felt Bucky take it.

"Let's." Bucky nodded.

Sam smiled at him.

"Here are your keys. Room service is available 24/7." Sharon said, walking Sam and Bucky to their new apartment. "Remember that there's also people living here, so take it easy will you?"

"No partying. Understood." Same said.

"Alright then." Sharon looked at the two. "Hope you find your new place comfy, and if there's ever any trouble...call me." She said, walking past them.

"Sharon." Bucky called.

Sharon stopped in her steps.

Sam listened.

"Thank you." Bucky said.

Sharon turned to him. "You're welcome." She said before walking away.

Sam smiled to himself, glad to see this small victory for his friend. He put the key up to the lock. "Alright, let's see what this place looks like." He opened the door and was in absolute awe at how big the place was. "Wow."

This place was amazing. It looked like those giant suites that you saw on tv that the rich people lived in.

The two walked in, admiring every square inch of the place.

The view was amazing. The window was an entire wall of glass. You could see all of New York through it.

"Nice view, no?" Sam looked at Bucky, who was keeping his distance from the window.

"Yeah." Bucky nodded.
