Close Your Eyes

Narrator's POV

Bucky stared at the unfamiliar ceiling above him, eyes tired and heavy as another sleepless night had just passed. He blinked once, then twice, then let his eyes slowly close.

>beep< >beep< >beep<

Bucky's eyes shot open.

"Hm.." Sam tossed and turned, stretching his arm out and turning the alarm on his phone off. "Urgh..." He sat on the edge of the bed, turning to Bucky. "Mornin' Sleeping Beauty."

"Mm." Bucky darted his tired eyes at him.

Alpine jumped off the bed.

"Wanna join me for a jog?"

Bucky just kept kept his glare on him.

"Okay, okay." Sam laughed, stretching. He stood up and walked into the bathroom.

Sam walked into the kitchen, with a  small towel around his neck as he had just finished his after morning jog shower. He saw Bucky sitting in the couch, with an elbow on his leg, holding his head up as his eyes were shut.

The television was on with commercials playing.

There was a bowl of cereal, still full to the rim with now too soggy to eat Lucky Charms.

Sam sighed. He walked over to the couch and turned the tv off.

"I was watching that." Bucky said.

"You were sleeping." Sam said.

"I wasn't sleeping." Bucky said, stretching with a groan before sitting back on the couch. "Was just resting my eyes."

Sam scoffed. He walked to the kitchen and poured himself a glass orange juice. "I'll be training at the compound again."

"When do you not?" Bucky asked.

"And I thought maybe you'd like to come today. You know, see everyone. Reconnect t-"

"Cut the shit."

"The city says you can't be home on your own in case something happens."

"I'm fine on my own." Bucky said.

"Your room doesn't reflect that."

"Mm." Bucky sighed, looked away from Sam.

He did have a point.

"Whatever."

"You'll go?" Sam asked. "That's great. Everyone will be glad to see you. And maybe you could go hit the range for a bit and see if you still-"

"I said I would go." Bucky said. "That does't mean I'll be training." He said getting up from the couch and going into his old room, closing whatever was left of the door.

Alpine meowed at Sam's feet.

Sam looked down at her. "I know, girl. Hey, but it's a start."

"James. It's nice to finally meet you." Bruce said as he saw Bucky come though the door of the compound.

Bucky gave him a small nod. He was wearing  his "disguise" he used that day when the whole world went after him Austria. He decided to leave the gloves at home.

Suddenly Peter swung in from out of nowhere.

"Whoa, Mr. Barnes. Long time no see." Peter said. "How've you been?"

"Tired." Bucky said.

Peter chuckled nervously. "Yeah. I can relate. They've got us training like crazy."

"Peter, are't you suppose to be training right now?" Bruce asked.

"Oh, yeah. About that. Carol and Scott were arm wrestling, and Scott is now giant." Peter said. "His belt thingie got jammed or something."

Bruce sighed. " told him to use that outside." He turned to Sam and Bucky. "Alright, uh Sam. If you could show Bucky to the training room, I'll get a simulation running when I undo this mess."

"Actually Banner," Sam said. "...he won't be training today. There was a situation, and he couldn't stay at home."

"Oh." Bruce said. "Well then. He can watch from the sidelines if he'd like." He walked away.

"I can take you to the-"

"I know where it is. I've been here before." Buck said, walking away from Sam.

"Uh, Mr. Scott." Peter said as he swung around the simulation. He landed on part of a tall building.

"What is it kid?" Scott asked, holding a building up and keeping it from falling in his giant form.

"Is that other building suppose to be leaning like that?" Peter asked.

"HUh?" Scott looked at the building next to the one he was holding up.

It was falling.

"Oh, sh-"

"I got it." Carol flew over and caught the building. "ARGH!"

A satellite fell off the roof and headed for some pedestrians.

"I got it!" Peter jumped and went for it. "Uh-!" He was hit by Scott's swinging arm.

"Oh. Oh, ho, ho, no. Sorry, sorry!" Scott said. "I was trying to get a better grip."

The pedestrians screamed.

"I got it!" Sam flew toward the falling satellite.

"Not in time." Stephen conjured a portal, letting the satellite fall in it and putting the pedestrians out of harm's way.

The simulation stopped.

Everyone sighed.

"Can anyone tell me what went wrong?" Bruce's voice came from a speaker.

"Uh...I'm pretty sure I wasn't suppose to knock the spider kid out of the air." Scott said.

"That's something that went wrong." Bruce said.

Bucky was sitting in a room above the simulation, watching through a glass. He shook his head as he watched the whole drill go down in flames. He rested his head on hand, leaning into it and slowly closing his eyes. "Hm." He blinked himself awake and up sat. "I know it's you Maximoff."

"You haven't been sleeping." Wanda's voice came from behind him. She walked up to him. "Can I?"

Bucky looked at her and then away.

Wanda knew it was okay for her to join him and take a seat. "So, how have you bee?"

Bucky really didn't like to talk about himself an avoided it as much as he could. "Aren't you suppose to be training?"

"Not today, no." Wanda said. "Why aren't you?"

"Hm." Bucky looked away.

Wanda looked at her hands, playing with her red aura. "Sam told me what happened." She said.

"Why does it matter?" Bucky asked.

"Because I want to make sure you're okay." Wanda said.

"Why?"

"Because I care about you James." Wanda said. "You haven't been sleeping, you're not eating."

"Things that will get better with time." Bucky said.

"It's been years." Wanda said. "T'Challa use to tell us about your resting period in Wakanda."

"It doesn't matter." Bucky said. "I'm better than I used to be."

"But not where you should be." Wanda said. "If you could let me help-"

"What do you know about helping people when you ca barely help yourself?" Bucky asked.

Wanda stayed quiet.

"Yeah, those long sleeve sweaters aren't fooling anyone." Bucky said.

Wanda looked down at her hands, staying quiet. "Things take time to heal." She said. "But they take more time if you're not willing to face them." She looked up at Bucky.

Bucky sighed. "I didn't come here for a therapy session."

"And I'm not here to evaluate you." Wanda said. "I'm only asking you to let me help you." She looked at Bucky.

"Hm." Bucky sighed, refusing to look at her. "Just don't- ...snoop around in there for too long." He put his hands in his pockets.

Wanda sighed, making her hands glow. She put her hands on the sides of Bucky's face, putting her finger tips on his temples and began to look inside of Bucky's head. "Ah-!" She gasped, a tear ran down her face.
