1.04 | planting the seed

"If someone hands you a crying baby, do you, A, curse it? B, lock it in a tower, C, give it a bottle, or D, carve its heart out?" The Fairy Godmother asked.

It was the VK's first official day of school, and Elodie figured out classes started at nine. Their first class of the day was remedial goodness 101, and to say the girl was bored was an understatement. It wasn't hard to know what any of the right answers were - hint, they were the most boring - but Jay had decided to 'joke' around and choose all of the incorrect answers, making the class go on longer than it needed to.

Mal was distracted drawing the wand and the fairy noticed she wasn't paying attention and called on her.

"Mal?" she asked.

"C, give it a bottle." The purple haired girl replied, with no hesitation.

"Correct, again." The Fairy Godmother said, smiling.

"You are on fire, girl!" Carlos exclaimed.

"Just pick the one that doesn't sound like any fun." Mal said, letting the piece of hair she was twirling come undone. Elodie stifled a laugh seeing the look on Fairy Godmothers face.

Evie, Jay, and Carlos all let out aw's not thinking of it before.

Suddenly, a girl with a very bad haircut wearing a baby blue dress walked in, squealing as she passed the villain kids.

"Hello, dear one." Fairy Godmother said, bending over so the girl and her were the same height.

"Hi." The girl whispered, "You need to sigh off on early dismissal for the coronation." She continued, handing the clipboard she was holding over.

"Everyone here remembers my daughter, Jane?" Fairy Godmother asked.

"Mom," Jane whined, "No!"

"It's okay. Jane, this is everyone." She said, handing the clipboard she signed back over to her daughter.

"Hi. That's okay, don't mind me, as you were." She greeted before running back off again.

The Godmother cleared her throat, "Let's continue." She said, walking back up to the chalkboard. "You find a vial of poison. Do you, A, put it in the kings wine? B, paint it on an apple? Or C, turn it over to the proper authorities?"

Evie raised her hand, but since she giggled at the apple choice, Fairy Godmother called on Elodie instead.

"C, turn it over to the proper authorities." The redhead said.

Fairy Godmother clapped with her stick, "Well done! That concludes the class for today, I will see you all tomorrow!"

After Remedial Goodness 101, instead of skipping most of the classes like the other VK's did, Elodie actually went to them. The second period was Physical Exercise. Third was math, a subject highly hated by the girl. Fourth was science. Fifth was History of Woodsmen and Pirates. Sixth was reading, and seventh was Safety Rules for the internet.

The redhead was reaching into her locker, ready to grab the books for math class, when she felt a hand grip her forearm.

"El, come with me." Mal said, grip still intact and dragging her away.

Having no time to protest, the redhead let the girl drag her away.

"Um, why are you dragging me to a bathroom? Are you trying to fu-"

"No!" Mal cut off, "Just watch." Walking into the bathroom, the purple haired girl put on a fake smile, gesturing for Elodie to do it as well.

"Hi! It's Jane, right?" Mal asked. Jane, who was looking at herself in the mirror, whipped around. "Ah. I've always loved that name. Jane." She giggled.

"That's cool." Jane replied, beginning to walk away.

"Don't go!" Mal exclaimed, stopping the girl with her hand, causing her to freeze. "I guess, I- We," she corrected, "were just kind of hoping to make a friend. You probably have all the friends you need though, huh." She said in mock sadness, lowering her head to make it look sincere.

"Hardly." Jane replied, but with real sadness.

"Really? I mean, with your mom being Fairy Godmother and headmistress? I mean, not to mention your own, uh, personality." Mal hesitated.

"I'd rather be pretty. You've got great hair." The girl couldn't help but blurt out.

Mal thought for a moment, unconsciously twisting her hair, before an idea struck her. "You know what? I have just the thing for that!" She pulled out her spell book, slamming it on her hand before chuckling. She opened the book, aggressively flipping for the right page. "It's right.. ah! Here. Beware, forswear, replace the old with brand new hair!"

She slung her finger around, Jane's head following it, before dropping, and when she looked back up, the fairy daughter had new hair.

"Wow." Elodie said, genuinely impressed, and breaking her silence for the first time. "You look like a whole new person."

"Yeah!" Mal agreed, "You almost don't notice you're-" she stopped herself, "other features?" she smiled.

Jane gave her a hesitant look, before deciding it was good enough. She and Mal turned to face each other, the purple haired girl cradling her book in her arms, "Do my nose!" Jane exclaimed, wanting to see what else she could alter.

"Oh, I can't. I've been practicing, but I can't really do big magic. Not like your mom, with her wand. I mean, one swoosh from that thing and you could probably have whatever features you wanted." Mal replied.

Jane looked disappointed with the answer, "But my mom doesn't use the wand anymore. She believes the real magic is in the books. And not the spell books, the regular books with history and stuff."

Elodie scoffed, "What a rip."

"Yeah." Jane agreed, glancing over to her.

"You know, she used magic on Cinderella, who wasn't even her real daughter. Doesn't she love you?" Mal asked.

Elodie held in a gasp, "That was a low blow." She muttered, thankfully no one picking it up.

"Well, of course she does, it's-" Jane paused, not sure what to say, "It's just, you know, tough love. "Work on the inside, not the outside." You know, that sort of thing."

"That's the face!" Mal suddenly exclaimed, pointing at Jane, who was now raising her head. "Yeah, and then just look as if your heart is about to break." The girl looked at Mal confused, so she gave a demonstration.

Jane looked amazed. "You think it would work?" She asked.

"Yes."

"No."

Both Mal and Elodie spoke at the same time. The purple haired girl shot the redhead a glare before turning back to Jane. "I mean, that's what old Cindy did, right? And your mom bibbidi-bobbidi-boo'd the living daylights out of her. And hey, if your mom does decide to, you know, break out the old wand out, invite m- us. Invite us."

"If I can convince mom, you guys are so there!" Jane smiled, before leaving.

"Wow. You really planted that seed. Hardcore, Mal, hardcore." Elodie said.

⚔︎

After the first day of classes at Auradon Prep, Elodie was ready to sleep. Though, Jane insisted on blabbing to Mal about her mother and what she said when she asked about the wand.

"Mom said, "if a boy can't see the beauty within, then he's not worth it." Can you believe it? What world is she living in?" Jane exclaimed, clearly frustrated.

"Mal? Do you like?" Evie interrupted, previously sewing a dress.

"Yeah it's cute. Brings out your eyes." Mal said, only glancing up.

"It brings out your eyes. And I agree, it's super cute." Elodie corrected, finally saying something.

Bringing the attention back to her, Jane sighed. "I'll never get a boyfriend." She said, dramatically leaning back on Evie's bed while putting the back of her hand to her forehead.

"Boyfriends are overrated." Both Elodie and Mal said, at the same time.

"And how would you know, Mal? You've never had one." Evie questioned, before turning her head to Elodie, "Try telling that to Ha-"

The girl couldn't finish her sentence before a pillow was being chucked at her. Mal laughed, it slowly turning into a soft giggle while Elodie glared at Evie.

"It's cause I don't need one, E." Mal said, finally recovering.

"And, they're a waste of time." Elodie added. The purpled haired girl gave her a pointed look, knowing that at least in her case, that wasn't true.

"I forgot to do Chads homework! Oh no! Oh no, no, no!" Evie exclaimed, gasping.

"And that's exactly what I mean." Elodie said, flatly.

There was a knocking at the door, making everyone look up to see who the intruder was.

"Hi guys! I'm Lonnie." A girl with a worse haircut than Janes used to be was. "My moms Mulan." She clarified for Mal, who was giving her a weird look.

Mal gave her no reaction, so she continued. "No? Anyways, I love what you've done with Jane's hair. And I know you hate us, and well, you're evil. But, do you think you could do mine?" Lonnie asked.

"Why would she do that for you?" Elodie asked, giving the girl an exasperated look.

"I'll pay fifty dollars." She said, smirking.

"Good answer. I need more materials." Evie responded, grabbing the bag out of Lonnies hand. "Let's see. I'm thinking, we lose the bangs, maybe some layers, and some highlights."

"Yeah, yeah. I want it cool. Like Mal's."

"Really? The split ends too?" Evie asked, clearly judging the choice.

"Nobody ever wants to become a redhead!" Elodie exclaimed.

Mal growled, frustrated with Evie's pushing and completely ignoring the redhead. She walked over to her bedside table and grabbed her spell book. "Okay.." She trailed off, finding the right page and smiling when she did. "Beware, forswear, replace the old with cool hair."

And just like before, she waved around her pointer finger, Lonnie's head following it, and green magic transformed her hair into a longer, lighter do.

Walking slowly over to the mirror in between Elodie and Mal's beds, Lonnie looked at herself.

"I know, I know. It looks like a mop on your head." Evie said, putting her hands on the girls shoulders. "You know what? Let's cut it off. Layer it- "

"No, no, no, no, no, no!" Lonnie exclaimed, fast. "I love it."

"You do?" Evie asked, scrunching her face up.

"It's just.." Lonnie trailed off, before suddenly ripping her skirt so it had a slit. "Now I'm cool."

Janes eyes went wide, her mouth dropping slightly in shock. Elodie smirked, "Like ice."

Jane walked over to the mirror, standing in front of Evie, before promptly ripping the skirt of her dress. She gasped, bringing her hands up to cover her mouth in shock. "What did I just do? Moms gonna kill me!" She exclaimed.

Mal, Evie, and Elodie all smiled at each other in amusement.

⚔︎

A couple of hours after Jane and Lonnie left the girl's room, Carlos had come in to work on homework. Mal was reading through the spells in her book, Evie was working on Chads homework, and Elodie had dozed off into a much needed nap.

Suddenly, the door bursted open and in came a long haired boy, waking the redhead up. "Yo ho ho!" He said, holding up his new jersey.

"Asshole! Be more quiet, I was sleeping!" Elodie yelled out, eyes flickering electric blue in the process.

"Woah there, don't go all sorceress on me!" He yelled back, walking over to Mal's bed. "Did your plan work with Jane? Are you going to see the wand?" He asked, calmly.

"Do you think I would be going through every single spell in this book if I hadn't completely struck out?" She question angrily in return.

"Someone's in a bad mood." Carlos muttered, though they all heard it.

"My moms counting on me! I can't let her down!" Mal exclaimed, flicking the boy on the head.

"We can do this.." Jay paused. "If we stick together."

"And we won't go back until we do. Because we're rotten.."

"To the core." The group chorused.

"Oh yeah. I found out that Fairy Godmother blesses Ben with the wand at coronation and that we all get to go." Evie said nonchalantly, acting as if she didn't drop a major bomb. "I have nothing to wear, of course."

"You what?" Elodie question, completely shocked. Though, before the girl could answer, there was knocking on the door. "I swear, if there is anyone out there wanting a new hairstyle, I will gut them."

Mal walked over to the door, and when she opened it, Ben was there.

"Hey, Mal. I didn't see you guys today. I was just wondering if you had any questions or anything that you needed." He said. Elodie picked up a nervous note in his tone.

"Not that I know of." Mal replied.

"Okay. All right. Well, uh, if you need anything, just, uh-"

"Oh wait! Um, is it true we all get to go to your coronation?"

"Yeah, the whole school goes."

"Wow." Mal mumbled, slightly shocked. "That is beyond exciting. Do you think that it's a possibility that the five of us could stand in the front row next to the Fairy Godmother, just so we could soak up all that goodness?"

"I wish you could. Up front it's just me, my folks, and my girlfriend."

"Your girlfriend?"

"Yeah. I'm sorry."

"Oh, okay. Thanks, bye." Mal waved before shutting the door in his face, despite him protesting. She turned to the group, "I think it's time Bennyboo got himself a new girlfriend."

"I thought you said boyfriends were overrated." Elodie said, raising a brow.

"You did too so shush. I also need a love spell."

"Wait, what? El said boyfriends are overrated? Try telling that to-" Jay was cut off by a pillow being chucked at him.

"It happened to me too." Evie said, patting Jay on the back.
