1.01 | leaving home

Elodie King stood picking at her nails in the clearing between two alleys, waiting for her friends. They were doing their weekly routine of reminding the citizens of the Isle that they owned it. Terrorizing them was efficient, and to be honest, the most enjoyable way.

The black nail polish that she had convinced little Dizzy Tremaine to apply was chipping. Granted it had been done a week ago, and she liked to pick at it, so that was bound to happen.

A loud clanging sound interrupted her picking and when she looked up, she saw a crowd of people beginning the weekly formation.

A few more seconds of the feet shuffling, stomping and metal clanging, and Mal, Evie, Carlos, and Jay all sung their famous phrase.

"We're rotten to the core!"

Pushing herself off of the brick building she had come to find herself leaning on, Elodie started to slowly clap - unintentionally making way for a mother and child to make their way through the crowd.

"Mal that was okay, a little pitchy but okay. Jay, maybe try not to get burned while sliding down a burning hot tin roof? Carlos that flip thing was too close to the ground, maybe practice more? And Evie, your hair's frizzy."

A person from the corner of Elodie's eye stifled a laugh with their hand, and that made her smirk. "Okay miss know-it-all, since you're suddenly the singing expert, you try, will ya?" Mal responded, a little too defensive knowing what her friend was saying was a joke, but hey, gotta play the part, right?

Elodie rolled her eyes, but her smirk turned into a small smile, letting Mal know she didn't take it to heart. She started to make her way over to her friends.

When the red-head joined her friends, Mal leaned down and stole a lollipop from a baby. The mother of the child glared slightly as she walked away, pulling her child in the cart behind her. Turning back around, Mal held the candy up in victory and chuckled, the crowd laughing with her.

But the crowds laughter soon turned into screams and Mal instantly knew that Maleficent - plus her knuckleheads - were behind her.

Spinning on her heal, Mal faced the two knuckleheads that were standing in front of her mother protectively. "Hi, mom."

"Stealing candy, Mal?" Maleficent said, clearly observing the situation. "I'm so disappointed."

Mal pursed her lips, "It was from a baby."

"That's my nasty little girl." The horned woman said with delight. Then she spit on the lollipop and held it under her armpit. Handing it to one of her knuckleheads, she said, "Give it back to the dreadful creature."

"Mom," Mal whined.

"It's the deets mal," Maleficent started, "That make the difference between mean and truly evil. When I was your age, I was cursing entire kingdoms." Having heard the same spiel for years, Mal knew it by heart and was mouthing the words, which her mother caught. "You.." she clicked her tongue, "Walk with me. See, I'm just, just trying to teach you the thing that really counts.. to be me."

"I know that, and I'll do better."

Will you? Elodie thought. Though she was again interrupted. "Oh! I have news!" Maleficent exclaimed. She turned to face the teens and a grin appeared on her face. The red-head didn't miss how the four knuckleheads the older woman brought walked behind her, Evie, Jay, and Carlos.

"I buried the lead. You five have been chosen to attend a different school - in Auradon!" She said with genuine enthusiasm. The thought made Elodie mentally, and physically sick. Her first instinct was to flee, but she remembered the knuckleheads, so she watched the others struggle against the burly men instead.

"What?" Mal asked. "I'm not going to some boarding school filled to the brim with prissy pink princesses.

"And perfect princes." Evie said, dreamily. Elodie shriveled her face up in disgust. Noticing the unimpressed look on Mal's face, and the disgusted one on El's, Evie covered up her excitement with a fake grimace.

"Yeah, and I don't do uniforms unless they're leather. You feel me?" Jay said while laughing. He went in for a high-five from Carlos, but the latter ignored it.

"I read somewhere that they allow dogs in Auradon. Mom said they're rabid pack animals who eat boys who don't behave." Carlos said, anxiety practically bubbling out of him.

Jay decided it was the perfect opportunity to scare the boy and snuck up behind him. He popped out yelling "WOOF!" Carlos jumped and hit Jay in the shoulder.

Elodie stayed quiet, but the others knew she was only thinking it over. The idea made her mad, but there was also a spark of curiosity.

"Yeah, Mom we're not going." Mal snapped.

"Oh, you're thinking small, pumpkin. It's all about world domination!" Maleficent's tongue swiped over her teeth. For living on the isle with barely any modern technology, she somehow managed to keep them looking extremely white.

"Knuckleheads!" She yelled and dramatically flipped around. She turned her head back around and called for her daughter in a sing-songy tone.

Before following her mother, Mal turned around and made eye contact with Elodie, widening her eyes to show her annoyance.

A couple of hours later, after Maleficent had practically mind-controlled everyone to pack, they were back at the place Maleficent, E.Q, Jafar, and Cruella were convinced was only temporary.

"You will go. You will find fairy godmother and you will bring me back her magic wand. Easy Peasy." She winked.

"What's in it for us?" Mal asked her mother.

"Matching thrones. Hers-and-hers crowns." Maleficent listed off.

"I, I think she meant us." Carlos gestured to the group of five teen villains and finally ended his silence.

Maleficent threw the nail file she was holding behind her and stood up, rather abruptly. She beckoned her daughter over, and leaned her head down lower.

"It's all about you and me, baby!" Raising her hand up, she rested her head on it, "Do you enjoy watching innocent people suffer?" she asked.

"Yeah," Both Elodie and Mal chorused, "Who doesn't?" the purple haired girl finished. The red head saw Maleficent shoot her a discreet smirk before turning back to her daughter. "Well, then get me the wand!" She yelled. "..and you and I can see that and so much more, plus Elodie. And with that wand and my scepter, I will be able to bend both good and evil to my will!"

The Evil Queen held the mirror she was admiring herself in lower and correct, "Our will." Cruella shot her an approving look while pointing to her, Jafar and Jay also turned around.

"Our will, our will." Maleficent repeated, though slightly sarcastic. Everyone had turned around to face the Evil Queen, but when Maleficent wanted the attention on her again, she snapped her fingers. "And if you refuse, you're grounded for the rest of your life, missy." She winked.

"What- Mom-" Mal whined. Though she stopped when her mother started to mock her.

Maleficents eyes turned green and she moved her face closer to her daughters. Elodie, as well as the rest of the people in the room, knew that the woman was using her mind control to get her way.

Mal tried fighting it the best she could, but she eventually gave in. She once had told Elodie it only stung, but the red head knew better and knew it gave her headaches. "Ugh. Fine, whatever."

"I win." Maleficent sang.

"Evie, my little Evil-ette in training." Evil Queen called out. You just find yourself a prince with a big castle and a mother-in-law wing." Then, both at the same time, they said, "And lots and lots of mirrors!" Evie started laughing before she was stopped by her mother. "No laughing. Wrinkles." Her mother reminded.

"Well, they're no taking my Carlos because I'd miss him to much." Cruella said.

"Really, mom?" Carlos asked, a hopeful glint in his eyes.

"Yes. Who would touch up my roots? Fluff my fur and scrape the bunions off my feet?" She replied, while kicking her right leg up, Carlos catching it in the process.

"Yeah, maybe a new school wouldn't be the worst thing." He muttered. "Carlos, they have dogs in Auradon." His mother reminded while scooping his face.

Realization dawned on him and he spoke up. "Oh no, I'm not going!"

Maleficent groaned.

"Well, Jay isn't going either. I need him to stoke the shelves in my store." Pulling him aside, he asked, "What did you score?" Elodie rolled her eyes, turning her attention away from the father and son. Though she could here Jafar aggressively rubbing at the lamp Jay scored.

"Evie's not going anywhere until we get rid of that unibrow." Evil Queen said, causing the girl to touch the skin between her eyebrows to see if her mother was telling the truth. That caused Elodie to lean over and whisper in the girls ear, telling her it wasn't true.

"What is wrong with you all?" Maleficent tossed her hands up in the air and moved down from the platform she was standing on. "People used to cower at the mention of our names!"

Mal sat down in the chair that was next to Elodie's and looked exasperated.

"For 20 years, I have searched for a way off this island. For 20 years, they have robbed us of our revenge! Revenge on Snow White and her horrible little men!" She pointed to the Evil Queen. "Revenge on Aladdin and his bloated Genie." She pointed to Jafar, "Revenge on every sneaky Dalmatian that managed to escape your clutches!" She pointed to Cruella.

"Oh, but they didn't get Baby. They didn't get the-" Cruella squeaked the stuffed dog toy around her neck. "They didn't get the Baby." She said cackling. But, Maleficent started loudly talking again, and scared her.

"And I, Maleficent, the evilest of them all. I will finally have my revenge on Sleeping Beauty and her relentless little prince." She paused, "Villains!"

The other three adults in the building all automatically replied "Yes!" or "Yes?" Maleficent walked over to the Evil Queen and sat on her lap.

"Our day had finally come. EQ, give her the magic mirror." The Evil Queen handed her daughter her magic mirror and Evie looked at it. Elodie could see the disappointment on her friends face.

"This is your magic mirror?" Evie asked, in slight disgust and major disappointment.

Reading the look on her daughters face, and the tone in her voice, her mother replied, "Yeah, well, it ain't what it used to be, but then again, neither are we!" She looked up at Maleficent, who was still in her lap, and lightly hit her on the shoulder. They both chuckled at the joke.

"It will help you find things." The Evil Queen said, resuming the conversation.

"Like a prince!" Evie said, excitedly.

"Like my waistline." The evil Queen joked again.

"Like the magic wand! Hello!" Maleficent was obviously done.

"Hello."

"My spell book. My book. I need my.. That book." The horned woman said, muttering to herself. The evil queen pointed behind her, at the refrigerator they called the safe. "Oh. Ah! The safe. The safe. Queen help me. I can never figure this thing out!"

The Queen rolled her eyes, but got up to help her companion anyway. A simple pull down of the handle and the fridge opened and fog poured out. "Voilà."

"My spell... Come, darling, come." Maleficent beckoned her daughter over. As she was taking the book out of the freezer, it was apparently too cold, as the woman was fumbling it in her hands. Elodie had to stifle a laugh.

"There she is. It doesn't work here, but it will in Auradon. Remember, when we were spreading evil and ruining lives?" Maleficent asked.

"Like it was yesterday." The Queen responded.

"And now, you will be making your own memories." Maleficent turned to her daughter. She started to hand the book over, before suddenly snatching it away. "By doing exactly as I tell you." Then she shoved the book into Mal's chest. "Door."

There was a honk coming from outside that interrupted the villain bonding, and Elodie was the first one to grab her stuff and the first one out the door. She was practically sprinting outside to see if anyone showed up to see her off. There was.

He was tucked back into an alleyway, but she would always spot him. The tip of his hook was glistening in the sunlight, though the young man was trying to conceal it. Elodie shot him a small smile, not sure if he would see it, but he raised his hook up in acknowledgment.

The moment was interrupted by Jay, placing a hand on Elodie's back. "Your mom's here, El." and he pointed to her.

The older redhead was standing off to the side, making sure none of the 'common folk' could touch her. She was wearing a pink robe and she had her hideously ugly fake eyelashes on.

"Madame." Elodie greeted, sad she only had to call her mother that in public.

"Hello, child." Her mother greeted back.

"Where's dad?"

Medusa pointed up to one of the terrance's of the nearby buildings. Elodie waved up at him and he raised his boney hand up in return. The car honked again, letting Elodie know they were waiting on her.

"Okay, well I better get going. Um, I'll see you later?" Getting a nod in return from her mother, Elodie stepped back and started to walk away, when her mother grabbed her wrist and pulled her back to her.

The younger girl was confused by this action until her mother wrapped her arms around her.

A hug.

Melting into the gesture, Elodie felt tears well up in her eyes. Yes, none of the kids on the isle had 'good' relationships with their parents, but hers was considered one of the better ones — if not the best. The only other time Elodie had ever gotten a hug was when her father had to go to Auradon for a trial. They may not be perfect, but her parents do love each other in some fucked up way.

Peeling herself from the embrace, Elodie wiped a stray tear and grabbed the handle of her bag before making her way to the limo.

Emily speaks !

I'm actually quite proud of this chapter. It's probably the longest I've every written for a fanfic. I love Elodie and I'm excited for you to see what I have planned for her.
