Chapter 9: Night In The Cabin
"Whatever you did, you saved me... Thank you." He said as he got up from the ground.
"We should probably start walking. We shouldn't stay still for too long."He added, taking her hand.
"I don't get it. How could I have possibly done anything? All I did was touch your hand then boom... It's like nothing happened."She explained, ignoring his last statement.
"Does it really matter how?"He asked, trying not to sound so casual.
"Well it matters to me." She said, pulling back to stop walking.
"Okay, I know it was strange and totally surprising but whatever happened, we're bound to figure it out sooner or later."He said cooly, stopping and turning to face her.
"You're right. Sorry, I just... It totally freaks me out, that's all. I mean you were... And then it... I can't even begin to explain it."She tripped on her words, still unsure of what had happened. "You know what, never mind. You're safe and at full strength, that's all that matters."She quickly added, putting an end to her rambling.
"Look, whatever you did, of course it matters to me, not just because of what you somehow did to me but because if there's something that they know and we don't then things could get dangerous. But right now, I think we should find somewhere safe and that's not here. We can start digging and theorising then."He explained, his voice taking on a rather wise but leadership tone. Elena said nothing, just nodded in agreement as they began walking again.
"So.. Was it cool?" Tyler asked suddenly.
"Was what cool?" She asked confused.
"Watching me die... Was it like in the Final Destination movies?" He explained eagerly.
"Are you kidding? No way! It was the worst thing I've ever had the misfortune of witnessing. So no Tyler, watching you die was not cool like a movie."She replied, both shocked and annoyed at the question.
"Got it. Sorry... Stupid question."He responded, picking up on her annoyance.
"Now let's go kick some kitsune ass." She said fiercely.
********
They had been walking for what must have been at least three hours when the storm from the previous night acted up again, a rumble of thunder sounded, followed by a crackle of lightning and eventually heavy rain.
"That's just great!" Tyler mocked, rolling his eyes.
"We should keep going."Elena responded quickly.
"Are you crazy? Do you remember what happened last time? There's a cabin that my family own on the outskirts of town, it can't be that far."He replied, shocked by her last statement.
"Of course but..." She began then broke off realising that this was one battle that she wasn't going to win. "Okay. Good idea."She said in defeat.
"Hey..." He replied, then continued. "What's going on with you lately?"He asked, sensing something off.
She wasn't quite sure how to put her feelings into words but, she knew she should at least try to explain, so giving a light sigh, she stopped walking and turned to face him.
"The truth is that I don't know. It's like every time I turn around, something changes and I can't even do anything to prevent the bad because I'm limited, I can't even fight properly. I feel so paranoid all the time."She explained, fiddling with her sleeves."I feel like I'm not being the best I can be. Like I'm not doing enough. Like there's something else I need to do."She sighed.
"That's what's getting to you?"He said, placing his hands on her shoulders. "Elena you are doing enough. You're one hell of a fighter when it comes down to it. You have nothing to worry about, I dragged you into this crazy world and I'm sorry for that, but I couldn't be with you and lie about it. I knew you could handle it. If it helps, I know you can. Look, Elena, I love you but sometimes I think you put too much pressure on yourself and you worry too damn much." He smiled lightly, before putting his arm around her shoulders, and beginning to walk again.
"Let's go fight those foxes with fire." He added cheesily, which earned him an eye roll.
After another half hour or so they had finally reached the cabin that Tyler had been telling her about. Elena couldn't believe her eyes. She did not like the look of the place.
"This is it." Elena said in disbelief.
"Yep." Tyler replied half chuckling.
"Looks like the start of a horror movie." She joked.
"Actually this would be plot filler, considering we're already in a horror movie." He responded, before adding, "It's just until the storm passes."
Once inside, Tyler dug out some half used candles from the closet and lit them, making the room glow. Now that it was lit up Elena saw the cabin in full detail. It was quite the classic old cabin. It had a fireplace, with a mantle, with a moose head hung on the wall, which gave her the creeps just looking at it. It had that rich smell of old rotting wood, which was repulsive, but not as repulsive as Matt's aftershave years ago when he and Elena had their make out sessions in her bedroom which ended with her spraying air freshener and opening the windows wide when he'd left.
Getting so caught up in her thoughts, she barely noticed Tyler stood behind her, and she was quite startled when she did.
"Damn storm! If I could get a fire burning then maybe it'd be a little brighter in here."Tyler grumbled, resenting the poor lighting.
"Hey uh... Say something." She said out of the blue.
"Hmm?"He hummed, confused.
"Funny. Say something funny." She explained more clearly.
"But... You hate it when I make jokes at the wrong time." He responded confused.
Never! In the year they'd been together had she asked him to say something funny in a grimm situation.
"I know but... I just want to test a theory." She insisted.
"Okay uh..... You haven't seen Jason Vorhees anywhere have you?" He joked, as confused as ever.
She smiled lightly, in a silent laugh, before walking over to the window. Whatever she was up to, the cheesey joke was worth it to see her smile, he thought quietly to himself as he joined her at the window. He glanced out and saw what she saw. While the rain continued to pelt down, the thunder and lightning had ceased. Neither said it but both were thinking it.
