Chapter 2 : Out Come The Secrets

"So...if it's not me then what is it?" She asked, hoping to get a proper answer this time.

"I wish I could tell you but, I can't. It's impossible because you would turn away from me." He sighed. Now he'd done it, he thought to himself quietly. He had really screwed it up this time. Sure they had fought in the past, but never over secrets. His only hope was that he could at least try to fix it.

"You were going to dump me by text and now you won't even give me a reason! You're not being fair!" She half yelled and turned away from him. It was the only thing she could do to stop herself from looking into his eyes, she knew if she did that then she would fall apart instantly.

She was right, it was unfair to her, and he knew that. Lost for words, and feeling as guilty as hell, he reached out and placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Elena. Turn around....please look at me." He said, feeling stupid for practically begging her for the chance to take it all back. It was a pathetic thing to do, and he was pretty sure with the way that this was going, that she thought so too.

"I can't." She said, through gritted teeth. That's when he knew for definite that this wasn't going to be easy. That's when he knew he had caused damage.

But how was he supposed to fix it if he couldn't get her to look him in the eyes. He was on the verge of freaking out since the one thing that she never did during a fight was turn her back on him.

"I made a mistake...I wish I could take it back but...I can't." He explained, and then added, "But since there are several things here more important to me, that are at risk right now." Unable to think of anything else to say, things fell silent for a moment. Then just as he was about to give up hope, she turned around so that she was facing him again.

"What kind of things is that then? Your reputation, I suppose." She replied, although she was facing him, she still avoided making eye contact.

"No. Definitely not." He said, tired of fighting.

"Then what? Because I can't see what would be so important that you would..." she began almost going into a rant until he interrupted her very quickly.

"You. Okay. That's what...or rather who. You and our relationship are far more important to me than my reputation and I don't want to lose you." He corrected her, almost offended by her thoughts on him in that moment.

"Oh." She replied in little more than a whisper. She felt stupid for jumping to conclusions. Letting go of a breath that she hadn't realised she was holding, she stepped forward and pulled him into the tightest hug, he had ever experienced. Finally, she allowed tears of relief to escape her eyes.

"I'm sorry." She whispered in his ear.

"It's okay. It's my fault. I'm the one who should be sorry." He insisted.

As soon as he said it, she let go of him and gave him a look that told him no.

"You still don't get it do you?" She asked rhetorically. Just by the tone of her voice, he could tell that this wasn't going to be good. He didn't know what to say without sounding so arrogant, so instead he decided to wait for her to continue. "I don't want a thousand apologies, I just want one reason. That's it." She finished, a pleading in her eyes that he just didn't have the heart to ignore.

As much as he tried, he was out of ideas to hold off on giving her a reason, and not giving her an explanation was making him feel guilty and giving her the impression that it was her. That was something he definitely didn't want her thinking. He had made a mistake and it wasn't down to her to fix it, in fact he was glad that she hadn't made it easy to fix because God knows he didn't deserve the easy way out. After thinking about it for a moment, he decided he should do the one thing that he has always strived to do. Step up and take responsibility for his own actions...and his words.

Looking her straight in the eyes, he decided that it was about time he should tell her. Besides, he hated lying to, or withholding the truth from her and he thought that she deserved the truth all the time. Especially from him. No matter what the situation was. Having come to a final decision, he reached out and took both of her hands into his own.

"If you want the truth, you shall have it, and once you know, if you choose to walk away, I'll understand why....okay? But this can't be said out here." He explained, and then led her inside, away from prying eyes and ears.

Finally she felt like they were getting somewhere. Like she would finally have the truth. Little did she know that what was about to be said, would change her whole life.
