Chapter 3

"Have a nice day, dear!" My grandma said cheerily as I walked out the door with my school bag slung on one shoulder and an apple in my hand.

"I'll try." I mumbled to myself, "Love you grandma!"

"I love you too!" As soon as her reply came, I closed the front door and walked down the street. My mind drifted back to what happened yesterday and a smile slowly crept on my face as I bit into my apple.

That was the closest I have ever seen Gabriel before. He looked so ethereal. He naturally looks that unreal. If I could, I'll create a whole fanclub dedicated to him, even though our school already has one.

As I was smiling to myself, my eyes were glued to the ground so I didn't notice the traffic light in front of me. I only noticed it when my head collided with it.

My body jolted backwards due to the impact as my hand instantly reached my forehead, trying to soothe the growing pain on the area. Some of the students snickered as they passed my injured state.

That's when I realized I was across my school building. I rolled my eyes at their usual behavior as I got off the concrete pavement and dusted the dust off my body.

I crossed the street as quickly as I could and entered the school building. Ignoring all the watching eyes, I moved as quick as lightning to my locker.

And just when I thought my day couldn't get any worse, I saw Gabriel and Taylor making out right in front of my locker.

I stared at them for a while, watching them both suck each other's faces off, before looking away awkwardly. I silently wished that a bird will just fly out of nowhere and poke my eyes out.

Why did I have to see this today? I thought to myself as I glanced at the watch on my wrist. Classes were gonna start any minute now.

I walked towards the couple and cleared my throat a little. They continued what they were doing and I couldn't help but get a little angry. They obviously didn't hear me. I cleared my throat louder which made them jump a little as I felt their orbs focus on me. They had surprised looks on their faces.

As Gabriel's blue eyes landed on me, I couldn't help but turn shy instantly. I looked at the ground as I pointed at my locker, "You're...um...in front of my locker."

Taylor smiled at me awkwardly as she stepped to the side. "Sorry about that." I gave her tight lipped smile and opened my locker, bringing out the books I needed for the next period.

I closed my locker and noticed they weren't around me anymore. I made my way to Maths class and sat down at the back. The students around me were being noisy as usual. They talked and laughed among themselves. Some of them glancing my way, obviously talking about me. But I honestly didn't care as long as I was at the back of the class.

My usual hideout.

I glanced at Gabriel, who was biting the tip of his pen a little as he was reading his notebook. It seemed to be a habit that he picked up whenever he's trying to concentrate.

A little something I noticed while staring at him all these years.

Mr. Xavier walked into the class a few minutes after I did, which made everyone lower their voices. We greeted him as he smiled at us and started teaching.

Mr. Xavier is a teacher in his twenties. He is pretty young and  is really good at his job. Though most girls usually enjoyed staring at him because of his chiseled features and "manly" aura. I would have done the same too, but my heart fully belongs to Gabriel only. He is good at teaching and stuff but he is teaching the worst subject possible to teach.

Maths.

A whole different world on its own. Every word he said went in one ear and came out the other. I didn't want to ask him any questions, even if I didn't understand, because I don't want to drag attention to myself and add another label to my name. I think Black cat is enough. I don't want to be known as the dumb Black cat.

As Mr. Xavier wrote down the assignment on the board, I glanced at Gabriel again. He was sitting beside the window and the light the morning sun was emitting shone on his skin and made him look ethereal. I unknowingly let out a breathy sigh as I stared at his majestic form.

The girl in front of me let out a cough after she glanced at my lovesick state. "Shameless." She muttered under her breath but was audible enough for me to hear. I peeled my eyes of Gabriel, even though I didn't want to, and faced the teacher trying as hard as possible to give him my full attention.

"This is going to be submitted first thing tomorrow morning." Mr. Xavier said as the school bell went off. The students chorused a yes as they grabbed their bags and walked out of the classroom with their friends by their sides.

I quietly carried mine and walked out the class, keeping my head hung low. That's when I bumped into Gabriel.

"Sorry about that." He apologized as he held my forearm, which prevented me from falling and landing hard with my butt on the ground.

I simply smiled at him as I felt his grip loosen on my arm. I stared at him for a couple of seconds before a basketball collided with my left cheek.

"Oh my gosh." I heard a girl scream as I held my cheek. A metallic taste was already in my mouth, so I could tell it was bleeding. "I am so sorry."

I already felt tears at the corner of my eyes as the pain on my cheek became overwhelming. I glanced at the girl's face and saw her scowl at me. Her eyes quickly darted back to Gabriel who was telling her to be more careful. The look in her eyes told me this definitely wasn't an accident.  "Yeah it's okay." I mumbled.

"Are you okay?" Gabriel asked, placing a hand on my shoulder. I nodded my head slowly as he gently caressed my cheek. My stomach churned in excitement by only his touch, "You don't look okay." He muttered.

Suddenly, he grabbed my hand and dragged me to who knows where. I wasn't even focusing on anything anymore. The pain in my cheek subsided as soon as Gabriel touched my hand. His hand was so soft. The moment felt unreal.

"What happened to her this time?" I heard a voice ask without much enthusiasm. The voice snapped me out of my thoughts and that's when I realized we were in the nurse's office. Miss Kate was sitting on her desk with her feet propped up on the table.

"Basketball." I said bluntly, pointing to my left cheek.

She rolled her eyes at me, "You know you don't have to come here for every little bruise you get right?" She snickered as she handed me a capsule. "It will help the pain subside. Lick it."

I obeyed her command and put the medicine in my mouth. "Do you feel better now?" I heard Gabriel say. I literally forgot he was still standing there.

"Yes." I said quietly as I glanced at our hands which were still intertwined.

He noticed what I was looking at and quickly shimmied his hand out of mine. "Sorry about that." He apologized once more.

"No need. Thank you for your help." I muttered and was about to scamper out of the room when he grabbed my hand again.

"I was actually looking for you." He spoke. I felt heat creep up to the apples of my cheeks as my heart started beating like crazy at the thought that I was on his mind.

"Really?"

"Yeah. Mrs. Diane asked me to call you." He stated as we both walked out of the nurse's office.

"Oh." I blurted out. I wondered what she could possibly want to talk to me about as we walked to her class together.

I opened the door to her classroom, "You wanted to see me." I stated as I saw the woman reading a book at her desk.

"Yes, Brianna." She closed the book and placed it by her side as I stood in front of her. "I heard what happened to Timothy yesterday. Is he alright now?"

"I hope so." I muttered.

She hummed in response while I fidgeted with my fingers. "As I have told you before, the school board believes you really need a tutor because they feel like you can't do without one. It's a decision that has already been made." I nodded my head in response to her statement, "That's why Gabriel volunteered to be your new tutor."

I stared at Mrs Diane for a while, trying to understand everything she just said.

I. Me. Gabriel. Him. The love of my life. In the same building. Same room. Him so close to me. Watching me learn. Teaching me. Him so close to me!

My mind was literally a mumbling mess as I digested the information. "Are you alright Miss Jules?"

Her question snapped me out of my thoughts as I quickly nodded my head and shoved my sweaty hands in my pocket. "Yes, I'm fine."

"I hope so." She whispered to herself while eyeing my form. "Where is he?"

"I'm right here." Gabriel chimed in, opening the door widely revealing his angelic self while I did nothing but stare in admiration for this angelic human being before me.

"So I have passed the information to her and you can start from today." Mrs Diane said happily before muttering to herself, "Hopefully you don't end up in the hospital too."

Gabriel nodded his head and thanked Mrs Diane before walking out of the classroom. I awkwardly followed after him before he turned around to face me, "So...when do you wanna start?"

"Today?" I chimed happily before realizing how happy my answer sounded. I awkwardly cleared my throat and repeated myself, "I mean, today doesn't sound that bad? Unless you want to do something later?"

"No, today is perfect. I'll see you in the library." Gabriel beamed before strolling in a different direction.

I stuck my hands in my pockets, trying to look cool, but my hands suddenly felt sticky. I brought them out of my pockets and realized there was a week old lollipop in there.

Students stared at me as they saw my awkward state. I quickly threw the lollipop away in the trash can and scurried to the girls' bathroom to wash my hands.

Note to self, check jean pockets before wearing them.

"...so basically entropy is just the randomness of a body." Gabriel explained as I nodded my head trying hard not to gush about the fact he was sitting so close to me and touching my book.

Gabriel is a great tutor. He took his time explaining every little detail I needed to know and didn't mind explaining again if I got distracted. He was very patient with me. I liked that.

"If you understand then, you can answer a few questions." He flipped through the textbook and gave me about five questions to answer while he watched me.

Suddenly, his phone beeped. He glanced at his screen with a confused face and rolled his blue eyes. "I wonder why this always happens."

"What's wrong?" I asked, interested in what was going on.

He glanced at me and smiled a bit, "It's just some stupid coincidence that usually happens. I don't know why but I suddenly receive money in my bank account like every Friday. It just happens. I don't know who sends them. I've complained a million times but they never do anything about it. I normally don't have anything to do with the money so I give out to charity or something."

I actually wondered why he was complaining. I mean, if I was receiving money every week I won't complain. But no! The exact opposite happened to me. They literally deducted money everyday for no freaking reason. Now I share the same account with my grandma.

I smiled from ear to ear, "That's a really nice thing to do."

He chuckled a bit, "Yeah thanks."

It was the first time I was hearing him laugh. I mean, I've heard him laugh a million times but this one is different because he is laughing to something I said.

I looked back at the book in front of me and frowned as I looked closer trying to make out the words on the book. It was all blurry.

I could have worn my glasses but they make me look like a nerd. And hello! I was sitting near my crush.

I pushed my afro curly hair out of the way as the strands kept on covering my eyes and not helping matters.

"Here." I heard him say. I looked at Gabriel, who was holding a blue scrunchie. I smiled at him and shyly took it out of his hands. I tied my hair in a bun and turned to him.

"Why do you have a scrunchie with you?"

He was silent for a while and his aura seemed to change. It's like he was thinking of what to say or he didn't want to say it. But he suddenly smiled and replied, "It's Taylor's."

I frowned knowing I was wearing his girlfriend's belongings. It made me feel weird. "Oh." I hummed out as I turned my attention back to the book in front of me.

I could see the question a bit better but I didn't understand it. "I don't understand this one." I quaked, worried that he wouldn't want to teach me anymore.

"There is a similar question in the previous page." He replied calmly still watching me study.

I nodded slowly and tried flipping the page but suddenly felt pain on my finger. "Ouch." I hissed as I withdrew my finger from the textbook and stared at the blood in it.

Paper cut. Bad luck? Why in front of Gabriel?

"Are you alright?" Gabriel asked worriedly as  he grabbed my finger and gently blew on it. He grabbed tissue from his bag and wiped my finger clean before placing a bandage on it. "You are so clumsy." He chuckled.

I blushed deeply as I saw how he was gently holding my finger and tending to it. "I'm not clumsy....the world just hates me."

He tsked, "The world doesn't hate you. Stop being so dramatic." He rubbed the bandage carefully and patted my hand before dropping it on the table.

I smiled to myself and directed my attention back to the book in front of me. After finally understanding the questions, I turned the book to Gabriel, who was still watching my every move.

He accessed my work and turns out I got three out of five, which was a very good score if you ask me. "Wow." Gabriel seemed impressed, "You did a really good job."

I felt jovial at the moment as he complimented me.

"How about a reward?" His voice dropped octaves lower as I realized he was closer than usual. I stared into his blue eyes and couldn't help but get lost in them, as they swirled with an unknown emotion to me.

I gulped in fear of what he was talking about, "W-What?"
