Chapter Twenty Eight

Ugh took so much work to get this stupid update to work. Wattpad wouldn't let me save it for a good 24hrs, wouldn't let me copy and paste the recap from the last chapter (had to paste it into the search bar and then paste it and re-space all the lines) and none of the spell check worked so there is probably a million mistakes but idgaf. Rant over haha

P.S ^^^ The trailer up there is for the Coach's Number One sequel, incase you guys aren't familiar with my other works. :-)

Recap:

"Come over to my place, we can get ready together," I offer.

"Sounds good to me!"

As I lean back in my own chair, I can't help but smile. The week started off bad, but I am so glad that things have turned out as good as they have. I am dating the boy I have always wanted to date and now my best friend is home.

Things are definitely getting better.

---------------------

The sound of Samara's heels clipping against the floorboards of my house, makes me look up as she enters the lounge room.

Her long, vibrant red hair is loosely curled, falling down her shoulders. She is dressed in a deep maroon dress that hugs her curves and enunciates her petite waist. She has paired the jaw-dropping dress with a pair of knee-high suede boots. I glance down at my black leather skirt and tucked in navy shirt. Definitely not as daring, but I need to stop comparing my confidence with hers.

"Your hair looks pretty," she compliments as she uses her phone camera as a mirror to put her red lipstick on.

"Thanks," I reply, before sliding my phone into the tight back pocket of my skirt.

The sound of a loud exhaust makes me get to my feet. Finn's friend Benji, also one of Samara's hook ups, is taking his dad's land cruiser out to the party to sleep in. It is an eight-seater, leaving seats free for me, Samara and Kiarra to get a ride.

"Ready Kiarra?" I call out to her.

"Yes!" she calls back and I hear her footsteps emerge.

She is dressed in a pair of tight, ripped jeans and a cute stripy shirt. She always manages to look really nice while wearing very casual clothes. Her style is pretty different to Samara's bold and daring choices, but it works for her.

"Nice boots, girl," she says to me with a grin.

I smile at her as we exit my house. My head feels light as I get closer to the car. Finn's arm is hanging out of the passenger window. He grins at me.

"Hi sister and her hot friends."

"You can't say that now, you're a taken man," I remind him and he rolls his eyes.

As I climb into the car, I see that Alec is sitting in the back, alongside Andy, another guy on the football team.

"Ladies," Andy greets us and I smile.

Alec barely meets my eyes and I sigh. I make a mental note to have a conversation with him tonight.

"Hey Alec, hey Andy!" Kiarra grins and I forgot for a moment that she hasn't seen either of them for over three months.

"Hey K, how's it hanging?" Alec asks her with a friendly smile.

"Awesome trip but good to be back home," she tells them.

"Ready?" Benji asks us and we all chorus back a response.

The ride consists of Finn blaring the music so loudly that my ears begin to ring. He is belting out the lyrics of the latest rap song that has hit number one. Kiarra and him get into a rap battle that leaves my sides hurting from laughing so much.

As we pile out of the car, Alec's shoulder brushes mine as he walks past.

"Alec, can we talk for a moment?" I ask him and grab his arm, to stop him from walking away.

He finally meets my eyes. "Yeah."

"Please stop being angry at me," I plead at him. "I'm sorry for everything. I didn't expect things with Miles to start up. I liked you, but you clearly only wanted the physical benefits of being with me."

"That's what you think I wanted?" he asks.

"Yes, because that's what it seemed like. I also asked for us to talk that time instead of making out and you practically ran away."

He sighs and runs a hand through his chestnut hair. "Look, it doesn't matter how I feel now, you're with him, right?"

"I want things to go back to how they were," I say to him quietly. "I miss having you as my friend."

His jaw is tense as he looks down at the ground.

"Just think about it, okay?" I ask him softly.

He nods, before he walks from me. I watch him go and I chew at my lip. That went better than I expected, but still not as good as it could have.

When I turn back to the house, Miles is leaning on one of the supporting beams on the porch, his arms crossed his chest. I smile when I see him and skip up the stairs.

"Hi."

"Nice conversation with Alec?" he asks and the smile from my face drops.

"It wasn't like that. I'm trying to get my friend back."

He nods. "That's it?"

"Yes," I agree. "I'm with you now, remember?"

He raises an eyebrow. "Good."

I nod with a smile. "Now let's get inside and get drunk."

His stony expression finally eases and he rolls his eyes. "I haven't been drunk since I've been back."

"Why not?" I ask as he wraps an arm around my shoulder.

"I used to do it so much," he explains. "I don't really like the person I am when I drink. It makes me do stupid things."

"You can drink but not get drunk," I point out with a smile.

"Where's the fun in that?" he asks me with a smirk.

"You've got me now, I'll keep an eye on you."

He leans down and kisses my cheek softly. I let him lead me into the kitchen, where Finn, Alec, Jai, Becca, Samara and Kiarra are all standing. They're surrounding the kitchen bench, a series of shot glasses and red-plastic cups cover the counter.

"The man of the hour," Miles greets Jai and they do a one-armed hug, causing several people to stare at them.

"How's it going, man?" Jai asks him with a grin.

It makes me smile as I see the two embracing like they used to. Jai is always quick to forgive, a trait I wish was more commonly shared. To myself, included.

"Good," Miles answers.

Finn nods at him and Alec takes a shot.

Jai takes his position, back to standing beside Kiarra. I watch them curiously as he loosely slings his arm around her shoulder and she leans into him. Oh. She still likes him. And Samara made out with him. Did Samara know Kiarra still had feelings for him? How did I not realise?

"Boys," a new voice says and I cringe when I feel Bentley stand behind me. "Ladies. And Isobel."

I glare at him. Finn smiles at Bentley and pats him on the shoulder.

"One more word," he continues to smile. "I will break your fucking neck."

Bentley only grins back, before exiting the kitchen. I glance over to Miles, who looks like he is focusing on his breathing. Anger really does control him. At least he didn't react. Bentley would have wanted him to.

"Well, I think he is a jerk," Jai says and I laugh at his word choice. "Let's drink."

Everyone agrees and I greedily down the shot in front of me. It burns my throat on the way down but it makes me crave more. Miles is looking down at the shot in his hand cautiously, looking afraid to actually take it. When his icy eyes meet mine, I give him a smile.

He takes in a deep breath, before taking the shot. His face doesn't change as he does. He's clearly used to the brutal taste. He downs two more and I watch, impressed, at his lack of expression as he does.

"Let's play Kings Cup!" Kiarra yells in excitement.

No one protests as it's her welcome back party. We move to the dining room table and Jai sets the game up.

Alec withdraws a cigarette from his pocket. "Jai, can I light up in here?"

Jai gives him a disbelieving look. "You know the answer to that."

Alec frowns and puts the cigarette back where he got it from. He looks tense as he sits there, his fingers absently drumming the table, his jaw ticking. He must have thought having a smoke would take the edge off.

I find myself really enjoying the game and end up quite drunk by the end of it. Miles gets the last King and is the one that has to drink the cup.

"My King," I whisper into his ear and he smiles at me, resting a hand on my knee.

"Go on, then," Alec says to him with a hint of challenge in his voice. "Do it."

Miles gets to his feet and takes the cup with both hands. I grimace as I watch him drink it. It has a mixture of all different alcohol in it. I'm sure it wouldn't taste very nice.

Without protest, he drains the entire cup and drags the back of his hand across his mouth. He smirks triumphally down at Alec, who glowers at him.

Loud footsteps can be heard running over the tiles, before Benji comes blazing through the dining room.

"Finn," he gasps out. "Eli is here."

Samara grins and clambers to her feet in excitement. Finn stands and Becca immediately rests her hand on his shoulder.

"I'm just going to tell him to leave," he assures her.

"Finn, don't," I warn him, standing in his way. "Leave it."

"It's okay," he says to me, but I can see the fire in his eyes.

I sigh and step out of his way. Alec, Jai and Miles follow him out.

"Hey!" I say to Miles. "What are you doing?"

"It's okay," he says, sounding exactly like Finn.

I give up trying to reason with either of them and turn my back to him. Samara follows them out and Kiarra rolls her eyes.

"They're all still idiots, then," she grins.

"Appears so."

"I need to pee," she informs me and I laugh.

"Me too."

"Shot gun!" she says and runs to the one downstairs.

I realise now that I am busting, so I make my way up the stairs, to use the one near Jai's room. As I exit the bathroom, I hear my name being called. I follow the sound into one of the spare rooms.

"Hello?" I say aloud, once I'm near the bed.

Warm hands rest against my hips. A hot breath fans across my neck, before rough-feeling lips press against the skin on the edge of my neck.

"Miles?" I whisper with a smile.

"You wish."

A gasp leaves my lips and I spin around. Bentley's dark eyes stare down at me as he smirks.

"Ew," I blurt automatically, before realising how rude that was, even though he is beyond rude himself. "What are you doing?"

"I'm bored," he shrugs. "Here's an idea, how about me and you, get into this bed-"

As thoughts of him locking me in this room invade my thoughts, I raise my foot and stamp down on his as hard as I can. He lets out a yelp and also calls me a very bad word as he staggers back, nursing his now-throbbing foot.

I make a run for it and fly down the stairs. I search for one of my friends. I make my way out through the back. My heart is racing as my eyes dart through the clusters of people.

"Isobel."

I scream and jump about a metre in the air.

"Sorry."

I spin around and stare wide-eyed at Eli, who is grinning.

"Didn't meant to scare you," he says to me in a smooth voice. "Why do you look so freaked out?"

"Nothing," I reply quickly. "Have you seen my friends?"

He shakes his head. "Nope."

I stare at him suspiciously. "You sure?"

"Can I talk to you for a sec?" he asks me. "Somewhere private?"

"Look, Eli, I was just in a weird situation upstairs and that's enough for me. I don't need to go through that again."

"Who was it?" he asks.

"Nothing. Don't worry," I say and begin to walk from him.

"I'm not going to hurt you, Isobel," he says. "I promise. I seriously just want to talk."

"About what?"

"Come with me and find out," he attempts to persuade me.

"Look, I don't trust you and honestly, you're not a nice person, so forgive me for not wanting to do that."

"If I was going to do any weird shit, I would just force you to come," he says simply. "Not that I am going to do that."

"If you want to talk, talk now," I demand.

We're already isolated enough.

He sighs. "Fine. I wanted to apologise. I know it seems like I'm after you, or something, but I'm not. I don't like Miles and I think you can do better than him, but I have nothing against you personally. I know Finn is your brother and you guys are close, but nothing I have with him, is against you."

I blink up at him in surprise. He looks sincere. Eli Matthews, sincere? I didn't think he knew that emotion.

"Oh," I say quietly. "Thank you."

He nods at me. "Hey, can I ask you something?"

"Yeah?"

"What's up with your friend? Is she like obsessed with me or something?" he asks with a laugh.

I laugh as well and cover half of my face. "She will kill me if I say anything."

"She is, isn't she?" he smirks.

"She has been into you ever since grade seven," I admit.

"Hmm..." he says thoughtfully. "Interesting."

I then realise that I'm laughing with Eli Matthews. This night has take a very bizarre turn.

"So, this has been nice and all, but I better get going," I say to him. "Thanks for saying that, though. I appreciate it."

He smiles. "I lied before. I saw them all near the front."

I frown at him and he laughs. We begin to walk towards the front of the house, when a girl I recognise wanders towards us. A strange, squirmy feeling erupts in my stomach as I remember her sitting in Miles' bed, in her bra and underwear.

"Babe," she says, snaking her arms around Eli's neck.

They know each other?

They begin kissing and I look away, feeling very confused. When he steps back, his lips have darkened. He runs his hands through his neat hair, making it messy and dishevelled.

"Sorry Isobel," he says to me with a smirk.

"What...?" I ask him, when the girl quickly disappears, not before sending me a sadistic smirk over her shoulder.

Samara walks around the corner and freezes. Her eyes dart between me and Eli, before her face twists into anger. I look at her in surprise, trying to figure out why she looks so pissed off.

As if sensing the drama about to unfold, Finn, Miles, Alec and Jai appear behind her.

"You fucking bitch," Samara snarls and it takes me a few moments to realise she is talking to me.

I look up to Eli, to see him smirking. He runs his fingers across his mouth.

"Thanks for another fun evening, Isobel. Call me?" he grins, before loping off into the darkness.

No one follows him as all eyes are on me.

"Samara," I say to her slowly, my eyebrows furrowing. "What...?"

"The one person, Isobel," she shrieks. "What, Miles, Bentley and Alec aren't enough for you? You're getting a real name for yourself."

"What the hell are you talking about?" I demand. I'm hurt that she would throw that in my face like that.

"You're a whore," she snaps and my mouth falls open.

Considering I've never slept with anyone and she has slept with a number of people, it seems a bit hypocritical for her to say such a thing. The fact that she is my best friend hurts the most.

She stomps away from us and I am left with my eyes burning with tears and like I have just been slapped in the face.

Miles looks pained, before following her.

"What the hell is going on?" I cry out.

Alec looks pissed as he leaves too.

"Finn? Jai? Explain!"

Finn is silent as he is gaping at me. Jai walks over to me and pats me on the shoulder.

"You didn't really do it, did you?" he asks me. "I didn't believe it, but shit, it looks pretty legit."

"What?"

"You and Eli," he explains. "A few people had said that you two were seen hooking up."

"That is ridiculous." I roll my eyes. "Jai, come on. You can't believe that."

"I don't," he assures me. "But you did just come out with him. He had lipstick on his lips and his hair... it looks like you two really just made out. Besides... It's not me who is really hurt about it."

"Finn, stop looking at me like that," I snap. "You know me better than anyone. How could you think I would do something like that?"

"You did it with my best friend and lied about it, what else are you lying about?" he asks me quietly and I gape at him.

"You are not serious."

He turns and leaves me alone with Jai. swivel my body to look at him and he gives me a sympathetic smile.

"They are stupid." he says.

"I know."

He gently squeezes my arm.

"Hey, Jai," I say to him.

"Yeah?"

"What do you think about Kiarra?" I ask, even though I have some serious problems of my on to deal with right now.

"Why?" he says suddenly. "What did she say?"

I fold my arms across my chest. He gives me a sheepish look when he realises how excited he sounded.

"Nothing... but she seemed really sad that you and Samara got together."

"That only happened because I gave up on Kiarra. I thought she didn't..." he trails off. "Damn it, I screwed up, didn't I?"

I shake my head. "I don't think so. I just wanted to know if she did have feelings whether you had them, too."

He nods. "Yeah. I do. It was easy to ignore them when she wasn't here but now she's back."

I smile at him, even though my chest feels heavy and I know this is a distraction from the crazy reality I am in. "Good. I'm glad to hear that."

He returns the smile. "You better get inside and clean up that mess that just happened."

"What's the point?" I ask and wipe away the traitorous tear that has leaked down my cheek. "They're assuming the worst."

"Go find Miles, I'll handle Finn and Alec." he tells me. "Samara... She was just a bitch. I'd just leave that for now, if I was you."

"Not going to argue with that," I say to him. "Thanks Jai."

He nods at me, before we part. I call Miles and expect no answer. It surprises me when he picks up.

I shake my head, even though I know he can't see me. "Miles, please don't overreact. Listen to what I have to say-"

My words die down when I hear a girl laughing.

"Who is that?" I ask him in a small voice.

He hangs up without a word and I let my phone slip from my hands.

This is not happening.

You all knew something was going to do down at the party, but did anyone expect that? Tell me all your thoughts?
