Chapter Thirty Nine

----------------------

Dedication: GraphicViolet for the cover! Thank you! <3

Recap:

"Oh," he grins. "Ouch."

I walk past him. I hear his footsteps behind me.

"Aw, don't leave it like that," he pouts.

I flip him off, before I walk out the door, slamming it shut behind me. As I walk to my car, I hear his laughter behind the wooden door. I grit my teeth, my fingernails biting into my flesh as the curl at my sides.

Eli is going to pay for what he has done.

-----------------------

The news that Finn is back at school, has spread like wild fire through the students.

The Boys drove him and carried his bags, while girls fawned over his injury, offering to help in any way, much to Becca's annoyance.

"It sucks, falling for one of the most popular boys in the year," Becca frowns as she watches a blonde-haired girl help Finn to his feet.

"Tell me about it," I agree, having been through it all myself, with Miles.

She gives me a sympathetic smile, before pushing from the table and marching towards the girl. Finn's face lights up when he sees her and it makes me smile. He is completely in love with her.

Considering Kiarra is on suspension, from the incident with Samara, I'm left flying solo, until Miles arrives. I scroll through Instagram for a few minutes, before a shadow looms over me.

"Good morning," he chirps, kissing my cheek.

"Hi," I smile up at him.

His fingers brush my cheek as he tucks a piece of hair behind my ear.

"Are you nervous?" he whispers, his eyes intensely staring into mine.

Tonight. Miles. Me. A secluded cabin.

I shake my head. "I'm excited."

He cups my face with his hands and softly presses his lips to mine. "Me too."

I place my hands lightly on his chest.

"I wish we didn't have this history exam. I couldn't focus at all this week, studying." I pout.

"I know," he groans. "All I could think about for this whole week has been you."

"Am I allowed to come tonight?" Kiarra asks I slide into the passenger seat. "Not that I care, but do you know?"

"Why wouldn't you be allowed?" I ask in confusion.

"Because I'm in suspension."

"But you're back on Monday. Technically, your suspension is over, right?" I shrug, pulling the seat belt across my chest and clicking it into the buckle.

"I guess so."

Now that tonight is drawing closer, I am beginning to feel nervous. I absently drum my fingers on my legs as Kiarra drives us towards the school oval. After the game, we're meant to leave. It's all coming up so fast.

"So. Tonight," she smirks.

I gulp. "Yeah. Tonight."

"You and Miles are made for each other. It's going to be amazing," she gushes with a wide grin.

I tug at the sleeves of Miles' jersey. He asked me to wear it for him. It's much too big, the sleeves being much longer than my arms and the jersey looks more like a dress, but I wouldn't want to be wearing anything else. It's soft and smells like him. It's perfect.

The car park is bursting with cars, as usual. We circle the lot twice, before sneaking into a spot that doesn't look like its an actual park.

"You might get a ticket for parking there," I tell her.

"It'll be right," she waves off my concern.

"Where should I leave my bag?" I ask, my eyes darting to my leather bag, perched in the back seat of her car.

"Just leave it there until the end of the game."

Kiarra's arm loops through mine as we begin the short trek to the grandstand. I see the team hovering near the gym door, stretching. Miles catches my eyes and jogs over.

"I'll save you a seat," she tells me with a wink.

I nod to her and by the time I turn around, Miles is there. He swoops down and kisses me, before stepping back.

"I'll meet you here. After the game," he says breathlessly and I blink up at him, trying to distinguish now from the past.

"Wait for me," Miles says, lightly placing his fingers underneath my chin. "Me and you. Tonight."

He leans down, tilting my head up. I draw in a sharp breath. This feels too much like last time.

"I'll be here. After the game."

"Okay," I whisper. "I'll see you then."

I blink rapidly.

"Me and you. Tonight." he murmurs.

His words. His movements. It's all too much like how things were, back when I was his secret... back when he left me.

"Isobel?" he asks softly. "You okay?"

"Yeah..." I trail off, feeling flushed. "This feels like déjà vu."

"Tonight will be nothing like what happened before. I promise." He smiles down at me with such certainty, that my fears evaporate.

"Okay," I whisper.

He lightly flicks my nose, before jogging back to the gym, where the rest of the team members have disappeared into. I'm sure my brother is in there, giving his infamous pep talk.

"You two are so cute," Kiarra smirks as I plop down beside her.

"Like you can talk," I grin.

She beams at me, before she begins to nibble on her packet of chips. I fold my left leg over my right as I wait for the team to come out. We're versing West End Warriors tonight. A team that we've defeated effortlessly over the past years.

When the team runs out, my eyes are glued to Miles. He movements are articulate and graceful as he manoeuvres through the team members, passing and throwing the ball between them.

He's sharp and strong as he catches and throws, a look of determination on his handsome face. I sigh and lean forward.

How did I get so lucky?

The game soon kicks off. Miles scores the first try and I leap to my feet, clapping and cheering. I feel so proud of him. It's a big deal for him to score the first try, being the newest member. He just proved that he deserves his spot on the team.

As if that try kicked Alec into gear, he soon scores, as well. It seems to be a battle between Alec and Miles, with who can score the most, the fastest. Jai breaks up the tension by scoring one himself, the opposing team having scored once through the entire game.

By the time the buzzer blares through the speakers, the score is 20-08. They destroyed the Warriors, like they do every time. I bring my fingers to my lips and let out a loud whistle. Finn springs to his feet so fast that he falls back down, losing his crutches. The water boy helps him back up.

Once the team is off to the sides, Alec and Jai hoist Finn up onto their shoulders. It looks quite comical, considering his cast-clad leg is corked in the air, his crutches waving almost hysterically above his head.

"Next minute, they'll drop him and break his other leg," Kiarra rolls her eyes.

"I hope not," I shudder.

Once the crowd and football members finally die down from the excitement, everyone begins to clear, eagerly heading to the after party, which is held at Benji's house. Everyone seems to be going, except Miles and I. We have... other plans.

My sandals slap the concrete pavement beneath me as I jog down the steps, trying to catch Miles' attention. He runs by me and into the gym. I let out a huff and turn to see Kiarra adjusting her bag strap on her shoulder.

"Want me to wait with you?" she offers.

"That's cool, I'll just grab my bag."

Our shoulders bump as we make our way to her car, avoiding various others doing the same thing. We give way to three cars, before making a run for it. She hands me my bag, which I swing onto my shoulder.

"Have fun tonight," she tells me, raising her eyebrows suggestively. "Don't do anything I wouldn't do!"

I roll my eyes and give her a hug. "Likewise. Make safe choices."

"Where's the fun in that?" she smirks, before opening the car door.

As she peels from the park, I wave at her, before walking back towards the grandstand. By the time I get there, most people have cleared out, except for the man who cleans up after every game.

With a sigh, I plop onto the seat and draw my thighs to my chest. I watch, silently, as the sun slowly sinks into the horizon, casting an orange glow across the bright green football oval. I take a few photos with my phone, before messaging Miles.

I begin to feel a little panicked. I waited, in this very spot, almost two years ago. Miles never showed up.

I glanced at the time. It's now been almost thirty minutes since the game ended. What is taking him so long?

Dialling his number, I try to ring, but his phone goes straight to voicemail.

Just like last time.

I gulp, beginning to feel nervous. This is ridiculous. This isn't going to happen again. So much has changed between us.

Every sound, every stick crack or wind moan, I snap my head up, hoping to see Miles loping towards me, his beautiful smile on his face.

The temperature begins to drop as I wait.

Thirty minutes quickly morphs into an hour. And then an hour and a half.

I'm shivering, my teeth chattering against each other as I hug my legs to my chest, feeling incredibly stupid and alone. Just like last time.

I can't believe this has happened again.

-------------------

Hey guys! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas! I have been so busy and still haven't recovered. I am so sun burnt I can't hardly even move. I hope you all had a fantastic time and are enjoying your holidays!

Any ideas on what has happened? ;)
