prologue
As it was
ADRIENE WAS ENTIRELY DREADING GOING BACK to Nevermore for yet again another year. The judging glances, whispers in the halls, and loneliness every semester killed her. Whether they hated her personally, or were just plain scared of her family, the Lykos girl had always been an outcast.
"Darling, are you even listening?" Angelica asked sweetly, smiling in the rearview mirror at her daughter.
Angelica was a psychic with a cheery disposition so, her only visions came in the form of positivity. They had almost completely dried up since falling in love with Carlo, being as his family and those around him were surrounded by darkness. However, every now and again, Angie would get a vision that foretold good fortune, and she was always excited to share.
"Yes, ma. You think i'm going to make a friend or two, I really doubt it, especially cause I can wolf out now. Everyone's just gonna stay even further from me." Adri's lips formed into a pout as she looked out the window, only the thick forest of trees in her eyesight.
"Those kids are scared because of the power you hold, no other wolfs can turn outside of the full moon, you are special, Ri." Carlo finally spoke, his hand interlocking with his wifes gently. "It was the same for me when I went to Nevermore, until I met your mother."
"People are still quite scared of him but, I do agree I have brought out a somewhat softer side of your father." Angelica added on with a light smile.
"I'm very glad you guys found true love while going to this school but let's be honest, that's not going to happen for me." Adriene's leg rocked back and forth out of anxiousness, knowing they were just a few short minutes of Nevermore.
"Well, forget all of the lovey dovey stuff, and just focus on controlling your turning, and making some friends." The older Lykos womans bright smile practically lit up the car, her soft blonde curls and perfectly clean smile almost hypnotizing.
When she was young, it was rumored she was part siren, but this was all after she fell for Carlo, of course people began to gossip.
"More on the turning, as proud as I would be, your mother wouldn't very much approve if you hurt someone." Carlo clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth. "and you tend to have quite a temper."
Angelica could feel how tense the air was as she pulled into Nevermore. She knew he didn't mean to but, her husband tended to push ideals onto Adriene that didn't exactly fit her. She was different from the rest of the family, and Angie wanted her to feel like she could embrace that.
"We didn't exactly do things right when we went here, choose your own path." The blonde spoke dreamily, before putting the car into park in front of the building. "We're here!"
"Oh great."
WHEN LUNCH ROLLED AROUND, ADRIENE SAT on her own. The other werewolves were afraid of her, and the sirens, psychics and vampires just figured she'd cause trouble if she stepped too close. She sat her plate down on the table lightly and sighed, pushing her food gently back and forth across her plate.
She was definitely not hungry.
"I love a fellow loner." An almost alluring voice commented, Adri looking up towards the source who was grinning. "Lachlan, and you are?"
Adriene stared blankly at him, not knowing what to say. If social awkwardness was personified, it would be her. He caught the hint and sat down across from her, cracking open his bottle of water.
"Not much of a talker, hm?" He inquired, an eyebrow slightly raised.
"Adriene." The Lykos girl replied with an awkward smile. "Nobody talks to me."
"Well, i'm the new boy, we tend to work our way up the ladder from the top." Lachlan joked, his smile never faltering. "Who is that fine specimen?"
The werewolf girl turned around to see a familiar face in his signature mural spot.
"His name is Xavier Thorpe, a psychic, maybe you're in luck, he just broke up with a siren." Adri spoke, her lips turning upward slightly.
"How'd you know, was it my eyes?" The Sereia boy fluttered his lashes as he pressed a hand against his face to pose.
"That, and the fact that when you speak, you're basically hissing." Adriene leaned forward, placing a hand under her chin. "You can full on siren."
"You read a lot of books, most people don't know about sirens that can do something besides grow a tail and tell people what to do." Lachlan felt seen in a way, his grin growing wider. "I like you Adriene."
"Hm, my mom was right." The Lykos girl spoke with a slight laugh.
"Your mom?" The Sereia Siren furrowed his brows, and laughed slightly. "You're a weird one."
"She's a psychic, told me i'd find a friend." Adriene felt her face get hot out of embarrassment. "If you want to be friends, I mean, you obviously don't have to or anything—"
"Yes, Wolfy. We are friends now."
