chapter four

Arguments

IT WAS SAFE TO SAY ADRIENE WAS ANNOYED AS she walked into Nevermore along with Wednesday, the Sheriff, and Weems. After everything that happened the night before, she had been questioned, searched, and got absolutely no sleep. She just wanted this mess to be over with, and to lay in her comfortable bed.

Then tell Lachlan absolutely everything in detail.

"How could you miss a dead body?" The Addams girl questioned as the quartet went up the stairs.

"Yeah, it's not like he could just get up and walk away, he's... dead." Adriene shivered slightly as she remembered seeing the monster viciously rip Rowan apart just a few short hours ago.

The sight wasn't pretty.

"That's cause the body wasn't there. No footprints, no blood, no sign of a struggle. Nothing, nada. I'm not even convinced a body exists." Spoke the sheriff dryly, shaking his head as he spoke to the girls. "The search party looked all night."

"Well, your search party must have left their seeing eye dogs at home. We saw that monster kill Rowan right in front of us." Wednesday explained, yet another flight of steps underneath their feet.

"There's no way to make something like that up, it was literally unbelievable." Adriene expressed, motioning her feelings with her hands.

"Exactly, unbelievable. Let me ask you girls something, did you get a good look at this monster thing?" The older man asked, obviously not believing a word any of them were saying.

"It looked like a monster, kind of hard to miss." The Lykos girl replied, rolling her eyes slightly.

"It didn't exactly stay around for a chat though." Wednesday finished the other girls thoughts as the two adults with them let out loud sighs.

"Maybe it was one of your classmates." The man insinuated, shrugging his shoulders.

"Sheriff, I find that statement offensive." Weems finally spoke up, gasping slightly.

"I don't care, cause I got three other dead bodies in the morgue. Hikers just ripped apart in the woods." He explained, shaking his head.

"The mayor said they were bear attacks" the principal spoke, almost disgusted by his words.

"... and if there is other dead bodies, why do you think we're lying? It could be the monster." Adriene was frustrated by now, and her usual shy self had completely gone out the window.

"The mayor and I disagree on the bear situation, and as for you two, I've met your parents, I think thats all you need for my reasoning." The sheriff snapped back with an attitude.

"So you automatically assume a Nevermore student is the murderer even though there's no evidence a crime was even committed." Weems spoke, standing up straighter in anger.

"and you judge us based on who our family is, when I couldn't be any more opposite. You're not exactly the best sheriff are you?" Adriene sighed and started to walk down the stairs, the opposite way they were heading. "If you need to ask me any more questions, or tell me the trouble i'm in, i'll be in my dorm."

Adriene might not be like all the other Lykos werewolves but, if she was going to accept one of their traits, it would be not taking any shit.

LACHLAN LEANED AGAINST THE TABLE AS he watched Adriene paint her portion of the boat. She had almost forgotten she promised Enid she'd be on her team, until Lachlan burst into her room mid nap to get her up. He never joined the Poe cup but, he loved to watch it, and did most anything he could to support Enid.

"You missed a spot." The Sereia boy pointed out with a smile, his best friend only replying with a glare. "Oh, come on. You've been grumpy for hours and still haven't dished all that happened last night before you ran back into me and Xavier."

"Care to tell me why you were with Xavier?" Adriene countered with a raise brow, using her brush in one soft stroke.

"We were just talking." Lachlan shrugged and looked at his nails. "So, supposed murder, crazy monster thing, what's going on?"

"I was with Wednesday and—"

"Oooo, already interesting, go on." The Sereia boy wiggled his brows in amusement with a slight laugh.

"We ended up getting chased by normies, and then she seen Rowan running towards the woods so we followed him, lost the normies, and that ended up being a bad idea." Adriene dropped her brush on the small tarp she was sitting on. "He basically tried to kill Wednesday cause he thinks that she's going to obliterate the school and kill me. Then out of nowhere some monster came and killed him, and nobody can find the body so basically, along with already hating me, everyone thinks i'm a big fat liar too."

The Lykos girl breathed it all out at once, not allowing herself to speak before she could think, or even exhale.

"Okay, that was a lot crazier than I expected—... but you know he's like alive and walking around right? I saw him this morning." Lachlan explained, leaving his best friend in utter shock.

"What—"

"Lachlan, if you aren't going to help can you at least not distract Adriene? I need everything to be perfect. If Bianca Barclay wins again this year I will literally scratch my own eyes out!" Enid almost yelled, the girl pouting her lips slightly.

"Anything for you Ms. Sinclair." Lachlan nodded slightly, picking up a paint brush.

"I'd pay money to see you scratch your eyes out." Wednesday spoke out of nowhere, making the trio who were in conversation jump slightly.

"Ahhh, my best roommate i'm so glad you decided to stay." Enid smiled brightly and turned around to look at her fellow werewolf. "For what it's worth, you too Adriene."

The compliment was quite nice, the Lykos girl knew Enid was nice to her because of Lachlan but, it was kindness either way and she'd always appreciate that, however the knowledge Rowan was supposedly alive still had her in a whirlwind.

"What does she mean you too?" The Sereia boy looked towards the Lykos girl in confusion.

"I was planning on leaving, and Adriene was going to come with me." Wednesday spoke simply, her eyes blank.

"You weren't going to tell me that part?" Lachlan questioned with a sigh.

"Okay, Wednesday, let's talk over here." Enid put a hand on the girls shoulder which was quickly shaken away as they walked a few feet over, allowing this conversation to be a tad more private.

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you, I thought you'd be okay without me and you know I don't fit in here or like it—"

"I don't really think i'm in the mood for excuses today." Lachlan scoffed slightly, threw the brush in his hand to the ground, and walked off without another word.

Leaving Adriene to know she had messed up pretty badly.

STILL FRUSTRATED THAT ADRIENE HAD NOT TOLD him her plans to leave Nevermore, Lachlan walked around the school aimlessly for hours. He couldn't imagine losing his first, and best friend from the school, it would absolutely crush him. He was even more hurt that she didn't feel the same.

"What's got you so down?" A familiar voice spoke, making the siren look up from his feet and in that direction.

He was met with Xavier's smile, the boy waving lightly at him with a bow in his hand.

"Girl problems." Lachlan replied with a shrug, making his way over as he picked another bow, and then an arrow.

"Relationship girl problems?" The Thorpe boy raised a sharp and curious brow, putting his arm up and pulling it back to release the arrow, hitting the target.

"Adriene." The Sereia boy corrected, following the same motion. "I just guess we aren't as close as I thought we were but, I tend to have a problem thinking that."

Lachlan's blue eyes bore into the other boys, who wouldn't look at him after the statement he had made.

"Maybe you're wrong, maybe you two are as close as you think but she has things going on that can get in the way sometimes. You know, like feelings." Xavier shrugged, still not making eye contact.

"If her feelings are caring about me nothing else should matter." The siren retorted, rolling his eyes. "Excuses are exactly that, excuses."

"Not everything is as cut and dry as you want it to be, Lanny." The Thorpe boy finally looked at the boy across from him. "Don't you get that?"

"Are we still talking about Adriene here?" Lachlan questioned, not shying away from eye contact.

"Let's just—... let's just shoot, okay?" Xavier shook his head lightly and averted his eye, loading the bow once again.

That was the last thing either of them said to each other the remainder of the period.
