Cloud Nine

Roman's p.o.v.

Eleven drinks and three hours later I feel like I'm on top of the world. I sway from side to side, dancing next to random strangers. Remus and Janus went upstairs for some reason a while back, so it's just been me for a bit. Which is fine. I'm good at being alone.

A blonde girl that's way too pretty for a guy of my looks walks over to me. She twirls her hair and smiles. She's clearly drunk too, but not as badly as I am. "Hey, cutie. I like the way you dance."

I laugh as she flashes me with the classic flirty eyes. She gets offended. "What's so funny?"

"I'm gAY!" I shout over the music. Her mouth drops and she gasps.

"No way. I've always wanted a gay friend!" She screams. I stop dancing, and look at her, my drink in hand. Normally if I were sober I would've just kept my mouth shut. I've never been good at standing up for myself. But not tonight.

"Bitch, you're shallow as hell if you want a gay guy to be your friend just cause he's gay."

She flips her hair over her shoulder and chews her gum. "I don't see why it's such a big deal. We can go to the mall and you can help me shop for dresses and we can do each other's makeup and it'll be so fun!" She smiles again. She's not happy with me, but she seems determined to get her way.

I scoff. "Bitch, I know your crusty fake blonde ass didn't just say that to me. First off if we go dress shopping I'll be the one shopping and you can help me. And with that spider mascara and unblended eyeshadow, I know I don't want you doing my makeup."

I hear someone dying of laughter. I turn around and Remus and Janus are back. Remus is shirtless and Janus has a hand around his waist. They both are clearly loving the show that this girl and I are putting on.

Her eyes widen and she stares at me. It's clear this girl has never heard an insult in her life. I can't help but laugh. She storms off and Remus and Janus are cheering up a storm. I smirk, taking in the admiration. It feels good for a few minutes until I am whipped around and punched straight in the face. The crowd of people start screaming in disbelief. I fall to the ground, spitting some blood out of my mouth.

"Why are you harassing my girlfriend, fag?" A guy who I can only assume is the one that punched me yells. He lifts me back up and I look at him.

"Ohh, so you're both homophobic. Well, I should just let you know that she tried to flirt with me until I told her I was gay." I laugh. He turns to his girlfriend, who looks away quickly. He snarls and turns back to me, ready to throw another punch.

Virgil breaks through the crowd and yanks me away from the homophobic asshole wearing a stupid football jersey. His eyes are full of anger. He stares at the guy as Remus and Janus quickly take me in. They ask if I'm ok and congratulate me over and over.

"What are you, his boyfriend?" The guy scoffs.

"I wish!" I chime in, laughing. Remus snorts and Janus facepalms.

"Doesn't matter. Go back to drinking and wasting your life away." He says, cooly. Despite the anger and fire in his eyes, his voice is still the same; deep, raspy, and casual.

"Or what, you emo fuck?" The guy challenged. He was definitely more muscular than Virgil, so I don't know if Virgil would stand a chance in a fight with him.

"I'm the one who beat the shit out of your quarterback last fall. Do you want to end up like him?" He says simply. The guy's eyes widen as he gets angrier. He scoffs and walks off, cursing under his breath. Virgil turns back around and sighs. He grabs me and walks out the door. He opens the passenger door to the car and I climb in. He walks around to the driver's seat and climbs in. He texts someone, I'm assuming Janus, before starting the car and driving off.

I lean my head against the window, smiling. I can't help but laugh. I feel so free. I told off some stupid bitch, I got punched in the face, Virgil stood up for me again. I mean the punch kind of hurt, but the exhilaration of the whole thing was just so exciting. Virgil doesn't take his eyes off the road.

"That wasn't funny." He says firmly.

"Pffffffffft, bullshit. It was hilarious."

"He could've seriously screwed you up, Roman. I don't think how lucky you are that I wasn't drinking and was able to save your sorry ass."

"Why'd you beat up our quarterback?" I ask, already bored and wanting to change the subject.

Virgil doesn't speak for a moment. He seems like he's thinking. He always takes time and puts actual effort into his answers. I have to give him some credit for that. Usually I just say random shit without thinking; especially when I'm drunk, apparently.

"He's a piece of scum who doesn't understand the word 'no,' so I gave him a piece of my mind. I used that situation as a threat to that jackass because--"

"He's buff as hell?"

"Yeah. He's buff and I'm just some skinny kid. Yet he's the one who wound up in the hospital and I'm the one who left the fight with only a small scratch on my cheek."

"That's hot." I said, closing my eyes. It feels so freeing to just say whatever I want and not give a shit about it. It's like there's no consequences. Virgil sighs and puts on a song from the album we listened to earlier in the day.

"Which one is this?" I ask, yawning.

"I'm Sorry Boris." He says. I laugh.

"You don't have to apologize, Virgil. Though my name isn't Boris, it's Roman. I thought we went over this." Virgil looks over at me for a second before looking back at the road, sighing. I sit there for two minutes before I finally get it.

"Ohhhhh, that's the name of the song." I say, putting the pieces together.

"Yep." Virgil says as he pulls into my driveway. He turns off the car and climbs out. He walks to my side and opens my door as I get out. I thank him and walk to my front door. Before I get there, however, I trip and fall on the concrete. My knees and hands immediately start to sting from the fall, but it feels easier to ignore right now.

Virgil runs over to me and hoists me onto his back. I smile and put my hands around him. "Yaaaaaaaay, piggy back ride!" Virgil sighs and opens the door.

"How'dyou know where I live?" I ask, confused.

"I'm Remus' friend, idiot. I came over to pick him up earlier today. I know your mom's working the nightshift, so I figured I'd just let myself in. Remus has a tendency to not lock the doors."

"You really are his friend." I say. Virgil nods and walks up the stars, one hand on the railing, the other under my leg to keep me from falling over. We get to the hallway and he stops, looking at the doors trying to figure out which one is mine. I point to the one at the end of the hall. He walks into my room with me starting to fall asleep on his back.

He goes to the bed and turns, his back facing the bed. He lets go of my leg and I fall onto the soft mattress. I laugh as he walks to the bathroom. He comes back with bandaids and first aid stuff. He cleans the cuts on my knees and hands, and then cleans up my face.

"You're gonna feel like shit tomorrow, ya know."

"What's important is that I feel invincible right now."

"Feeling invincible leads to recklessness." Virgil says simply as he tucks me into bed. I smile and look up at him. He looks back at me but looks away quickly.

"See ya around, Roman. Be careful when ya wake up tomorrow."

"Waitwaitwaitwait Virgilllll, come here first! I have a secrettt!" I say, giggling. Virgil raises an eyebrow but listens, leaning closer to me so I can whisper to him. Instead I kiss him quickly on the lips. It's sloppy, and barely a peck, but I don't regret it at all. Virgil's eyes widen and he's caught completely off guard.

I smile victoriously, glad I got a reaction out of him. More importantly I'm glad I got to kiss him. Whether I remember anything by morning or not, it doesn't matter. I feel like I'm on cloud nine. Virgil stares at me.

"Why the hell did you do that?" He asks. I yawn, closing my eyes. I shrug.

"Dunno."

"Don't you dare go to sleep before you give me your answer."

"Mmm." I mumble, about to pass out anyway.

"Roman!" He says sternly, but I'm already out like a light.
