Chapter Twenty-One

-Avery-

He knew that Peter had suggested he rest, but he couldn't stop himself from worrying about Devin. He was too anxious to just sit in his cabin, so he started deep cleaning the kitchen. It was the least he could do for failing to keep Devin from causing more problems.

The thing he didn't want to think about was that he and Devin hooking up was a problem in itself. Sleeping with Devin was likely causing Devin to feel like he could get away with things and get special treatment. He knew that he should put a stop to it, but he was so weak when it came to Devin. He knew it was selfish, but he didn't want to stop having sex with Devin or stop sleeping next to him. He really liked Devin cuddling him all night and he didn't want to give that up.

But continuing with all of this was only going to hurt him in the end. He'd have to say goodbye to Devin eventually, and after that he wouldn't have anyone by his side at night. It would be as if the entire thing had been just a dream. He was torn between wanting to enjoy it while it lasted or slowly pulling away from Devin. He didn't know what to do.

Before he could think on it further, Sam and Amanda came into the kitchen.

"Did Devin actually steal a truck?!" Sam asked.

Nodding, he sighed and plopped down into one of the chairs.

"We've never had anything like this happen," Amanda said, joining him at the table.

"Mitch is going to rip him a new one. This might be the moment Devin finally gets sent home," Sam said gleefully. "I can't wait to see what happens."

"He's done for," Marc said, walking into the kitchen. "I just heard."

As his coworkers discussed the situation, he got up and began making dinner. His problem of not knowing what to do with Devin might not be a problem anymore if Mitch actually sent him home early. He didn't want to think about that, so he focused on preparing the food instead.

Just as they were taking the first few bites of their food, Devin finally pulled back in, five hours after he'd left. They all watched with bated breath as Mitch stormed out of his office. His words were clearly heard, even though he was now outside by the truck.

"Where have you been?!" Mitch yelled. "In my office, now!"

-Devin-

Rolling his eyes, he grabbed the cooler and followed Mitch inside, not making eye contact with anyone else. He sat in the chair in front of Mitch's desk and let Mitch yell for a while, something about liability and the truck and him not being insured or authorized to drive it off the property. He'd been yelled at plenty of times in his life, so he was an expert at tuning it out.

"Where were you?" Mitch asked again, finally ending his tirade.

"Out for a drive."

"Devin! I'm serious. What were you doing?"

"I just wanted some time off, okay?"

"If you need time off, you ask first! I hope it was worth it, because you're going to spend this entire weekend working."

He stared at Mitch, giving no reaction to his punishment.

"What's in the cooler?" Mitch asked.

"Nothing."

Mitch leaned forward and grabbed it. When he opened it and lifted one of the pints out, his expression turned to one of confusion. He opened the lid to see what was inside.

"This is Avery's favorite ice cream," Mitch said.

"Yeah."

Mitch put the lid back on and set it down. "This is all you bought?"

"Yeah."

Mitch shook his head, clearly frustrated. "Why didn't you tell me this at the beginning?"

He shrugged.

"You drove four hours to get ice cream for Avery?"

"Yes," he replied defensively.

"Did Avery ask you to do this?"

"No," he answered, looking at Mitch like what he had just suggested was absurd. "He doesn't even know about it, seeing as I haven't been able to give it to him yet."

Mitch opened his mouth again, but then sat there in stunned silence. One corner of Devin's mouth lifted in a smirk. If Mitch punished him now, he'd look like an asshole. He could tell he'd caught Mitch completely off guard.

Mitch finally spoke. "I - look, Devin, you can't just take a truck off the property. If you want to do something nice for Avery, ask one of us and we'll help you out." He stood up. "What you did was irresponsible so I'll still need you to work this weekend, but we can settle on just four hours of work. Get some food and then go to your cabin," he ordered gruffly.

Standing up, he smirked and took the cooler. He was lucky that the person he'd gone to all this effort for happened to be Mitch's favorite employee.

-Avery-

They all waited at the dinner table, curious as to what was going to happen to Devin. There was a lot of muffled yelling, and then silence. When the door finally opened, Devin walked out with the cooler he'd taken in. Everyone watched as he got a plate full of food for himself and left the building. Mitch came out of his office, looking defeated.

"Is everything okay?" Peter asked.

Mitch sighed and shook his head. "I don't understand him. I don't understand why he does anything that he does."

"That makes all of us," Sam said. "Are you kicking him out?"

"No. Four hours of weekend work," Mitch replied, and then walked out of the building.

"Four hours of weekend work and that's it?" Amanda asked, looking around the table in disbelief.

"I mean, we all heard that, right?" Sam asked, looking equally in shock. "I thought for sure he'd be going home."

"What does he have on Mitch?" Marc wondered. "Mitch looked like he'd given up."

"It wouldn't surprise me if Devin pulled some spoiled rich guy bullshit," Sam said, rolling her eyes. "Mitch probably felt pressured to let him stay since Devin's dad is donating a lot of money to the forest service. Or so I heard."

"Maybe we shouldn't speculate," Avery said, finally speaking up. "I'm sure Mitch had a good reason to do what he did. We don't know the full story."

"He's right," Peter said, backing him up. "You all should just let it go and focus on something else."

Sam shook her head in frustration, but she dropped the subject.

"I'll see you all tomorrow," Avery told them, getting up from the table. He wanted to talk to Devin.

He went back to his cabin first, but he hadn't been there more than a minute when there was a knock on his door. He opened it to find Devin standing there with the same cooler he'd had earlier. He stepped back to let Devin in but immediately lit into him.

"What were you thinking?" he asked. "You can't just take off like that! Mitch nearly had a heart attack. I nearly had a heart attack! I can't believe he didn't send you home. Do you have any idea how -"

He stopped abruptly as Devin pulled something out of the cooler and held it out to him.

"Here. This is for you."

He looked down at the object in confusion. "Is this ice cream?" he asked, taking the plain white pint being offered to him.

"Yeah. I got a few more too so you shouldn't run out for a while."

He opened his mouth to respond, but he didn't know what to say. This was the last thing he would have expected.

"You drove all that way to get ice cream? For me?"

"It gave me something to do," Devin replied nonchalantly. "It was nice to get out and drive for a while."

No one had ever put in this much effort to do anything for him. He was stunned, and he felt himself blushing. He felt warm all over knowing that Devin had done this for him. But as flattering as it was, it had caused him to worry and it could have gotten Devin in serious trouble.

"I really appreciate it," he continued. "But Devin...you can't just do stuff like this. You could have gotten in so much trouble. And what if something had happened? There are a lot of -"

Devin put a finger to Avery's lips, shushing him. "Just enjoy it, Avery."

He felt heat course through his body at Devin's touch. He wished more than ever that he was able to resist Devin.

Smirking, Devin put his other hand on Avery's hip and let it drift down towards his ass. "I'll go put your ice cream in the freezer, unless you want some of it now."

He shook his head no.

"I'll be right back," Devin said, lowering his voice. "Don't go anywhere, unless it's your bed."

He swallowed hard and watched Devin slip out of his cabin. He knew he shouldn't keep sleeping with Devin, but he was too weak to resist. Devin was so hot, and he was paying attention to him. No man that attractive had ever given him a second look, let alone driven hours to get his favorite ice cream. He was falling for Devin again, and there was nothing he could do to stop it.

While he was waiting for Devin to come back, he began to have more doubts about what he was doing. Their relationship was causing problems and Devin was going to be leaving soon anyway, and when he did, he was going to get his heart broken. He knew he would never hear from Devin again once Devin left the camp. It didn't matter that Devin was giving him attention now and claimed that he enjoyed sex with him. He knew he wasn't Devin's type and that no matter what Devin said, Devin was still using him.

He reluctantly made the decision to gradually start pulling away from Devin. But he'd start tomorrow. Tonight, he was going to have one last guilt free hook-up with Devin, and then he was going to fall asleep in Devin's arms. He could at least live this dream for one more night.

-Devin-

He woke up the next morning to the sun on his face. He opened his eyes and saw Avery's face just inches away. Avery was still asleep, and he took advantage of that to stare at Avery.

Now, he didn't know how he could have ever not been attracted to Avery. Avery was adorable. Sure, he looked a little nerdy and could probably pass for a teenager if people didn't look too hard, but he was cute. He loved Avery's huge smile and the contrast of his blue eyes with his brown hair and creamy skin. Avery had a kind face, and it fit his personality perfectly.

He thought about last night and the soft skin on the rest of Avery's body. He loved running his hands all over Avery, who had a fantastic body and didn't seem to know it. He was small and slim, but his perky ass and the light muscles on his frame drove Devin crazy.

Last night, when he returned to Avery's cabin after taking the ice cream to the kitchen, he slowly stripped Avery, teasing him with soft, lingering kisses and a feather touch as his hands roamed. He finally scooped him up and laid him in bed, where he took Avery slowly at first, delighting in listening to Avery's moans and watching him writhe on the bed. Then he switched places and let Avery ride him. He couldn't keep his hands off Avery. Even when they were sleeping, he kept his arms around him. This was the only time he could be affectionate with him, and it made him never want to leave Avery's cabin.

He was starting to get attached to Avery and there was nothing he could do about it. He didn't know what he was going to do when it was time for him to leave the camp. At this point, he didn't know how to sleep by himself anymore. He couldn't possibly leave and never see Avery again.

There was no getting around it at this point. He was going to have to tell Avery how he felt so they could figure out how to continue seeing each other. The thought of confessing that he liked someone and wanted to date them was terrifying, but the alternative was even worse. He was willing to take the chance.
