THERE WERE TWO THINGS NICHOLAS BENDER KNEW INSIDE AND OUT: how to pump, shoot, and reload a shotgun with his eyes closed and how to please a woman in the most disgusting detail. Both of these things could be thanks to his father Frank Bender, who taught little Nicky more things than he should have at such a young age, childhood trauma and daddy issues be damned to hell.

So you could only imagine Frank's surprise that only descended into anger when he had found his son executing tip #2 on a boy, the other boy's mouth agape in a way that only pleasure could make it. Nick then got beaten down for it, barely hanging on to his breath when Frank was done, a broken, bloody nose and a shiner as his grand prize for using what he knew—note the sarcasm. With that, Nick moved out of Frank's house and into his grandfather's little house in a trailer park and made nice with the neighboring people all the while sporting a split lip and ugly bruise around his eye, a devilish purple.

Nick couldn't wait to hightail it out of Hawkins and finally loosen the rope around his neck that was slowly continuing to thin out his breathing. 1986 was going to be his year until all of that came to a screeching halt when the high school cheer captain was found dead and one of his neighbors was Hawkins's undesirable number one and most wanted, with a basketball gang on a witch hunt looking to put his head on a stake, along with a whole bunch of nonsensical batshit that was—and had been—going on in their little town of Hawkins.

And not to mention the fact that Nick's visions have been coming back but we'll get to that later.
