20: Zuko's Revelations (Pt. 2)

"You don't give yourself enough credit, Zuko. Deep down, you've always known what's right." Aang comforted him. "I mean, you were right about Yu Dao."

"Yeah, I guess I was."

"And you were  right to keep YN in your life. I think she is a major reason you've been able to see things in a new light." He glanced down at your now-sleeping figure. "I know that seeing her with you has helped me see you in a new light."

He let out a deep breath.

"I can't believe she's here. After all the bad choices I made." He shook his head. "She, and you, have both stuck with me, even though my life has been filled with bad choice after bad choice. I should have never chased after you. I should have taken her back to the Fire Nation with me."

He left out a majority of his bad choices, knowing that he had plenty to choose from.

"So..." Aang felt awkward and changed the subject. "When you fell into that chasm I created... did you feel... relief... then too?"

"No. As soon as my foot slipped, I knew somehow that you wouldn't let me die." Zuko admitted.

"Because I'm a flawed Avatar." Aang looked taken aback.

"Don't get me wrong! I'm grateful that you--"

"Roku told me that you're his great-grandson."

"That's true." Zuko nodded and ran his fingers through your hair.

"Since Roku's my past life, in a way you're my family, Zuko and no matter how hard I've tried, I've never been able to detach myself from those sort of bonds. It's a flaw, I know, but it's one I've decided to accept. For this life at least." Aang's hand went to his heart. "And that means your child would be Roku's great-great-granchild. And I feel a similar sort of bond to them as well."

"You're not the one who's flawed, Aang." Zuko sighed. "Why can't the struggle get easier for me? Even just a little? Sometimes, I wonder how long I'll last. If my dad isn't trying to conquer the world, then I'm now the ruler of a nation. If I'm not trying to hunt down the AVATAR, then I'm hit with the news that I'm going to be a father. You know, in that dream, a woman stood with us on that mountaintop, watching from the shadows. I think she was my mother."

"Sometimes," Iroh peeked in from the back, "Dreams are the way a person's psirit reveals the answer to his own problems. But then again, sometimes they are just the result of eating spicy food before going to bed!"

Iroh walked in with more tea and a big smile on his face.

"Would you like me to take YN to bed? Are your legs getting numb?" He inquired.

"No, she's comforting to me." Zuko mumbled, not willing to kiss your forehead, but wanting to. "Maybe finding my mother would connect me to a part of my heritage that isn't so murky and confusing. Maybe then, I'd finally find peace. It would be good for my child as well."

"You mean Roku's bloodline? Idon't know..." Aang thought hard.

"I never told either of you this, but right after I became Fire Lord, I sent out search party after search party looking for her. I even hired June and her shirshu. They all came back empty handed. What can I do now that I haven't already tried?" Zuko looked at Iroh and Aang.

"It's a new world, Zuko. You need to take some risks! We all do!"

"Not too many." Iroh reminded him. "He has a baby coming. But speaking of risks... try my new tea!"
