Battered
Sophie found out that Saul truly never really slept. He'd watch her most of the night, stroking her cheek or playing with her hair. It was soothing because Saul soon found out about her night terrors. He didn't seem to mind, especially when he was already up.
She'd roll over every now and then just to find him on his phone or pacing the room, doing pushups or sit ups. Sometimes he'd even be reading Romeo and Juliet or surfing the TV.
"What are you thinking about?"She asked him, rolling onto her side and propping up on an elbow.
"How I'm going to spend the rest of my life with you."
Sophie smiled, "You're somewhere else."
Saul sighed, catching her eyes, "I'm thinking about all of the scenarios that can happen and what I need to do with each plan."
Sophie ran a finger over his stomach and Saul melted into her, placing his phone on the nightstand and turning to face her on the bed, "We might have to go on the run."
"That didn't work for me last time."
"I know, but you didn't really want to disappear."
Sophie grimaced, "You don't know that."
"You're smart. You knew Eddie was watching you."
"I didn't think he'd kill off my friends."
She rolled onto her back and choked on her tears.
"I practically fed them to him."
Saul shook his head, "You're friends were in this life. They took the chance, Sophie, and you have to understand that."
"I shouldn't have let them. I'm surprised Joe still wants me to be his wife after what I did."
Saul frowned. Every thought of Joe Crane that entered his mind made him rage. He didn't even want to think about the fact that she'd have to cater to Joe's sexual desires just to put on a show.
"I'm sorry,"Sophie whispered to him as if reading his mind, "I don't know if Joe will take no for an answer..."
Saul shrugged, "That's why I need to keep you as secure as possible. If you get caught stealing, the repercussions in my family are brutal and all of the families have agreed to it."
Sophie looked at him again, "They won't really hurt me will they?"
Saul smiled, running his hand down her front and back up again to her chin, caressing it softly.
"Of course not."
"I don't know if they won't, Saul. If your father isn't in on it,-"
"It will be my mother's possessions, Sophie, so it's her punishment. I will keep an eye on you, I promise."
"I'm so tired,"Sophie yawned, "I'm so nervous, though."
"Don't be. I'm not going to let anything happen to you."
Saul pulled her into him and kissed her forehead, "Go to sleep. I have plans for us tomorrow."
Those plans were shattered right when they woke up.
"Oh my God!" Sophie jumped up from the bed. She startled Saul awake and he too made his way from the bed. She was glaring at her phone.
"What? What is it, baby??" He was trying to calm her down, but she was frantically gathering her items.
"Eddie's coming to get me!"
"What?" Saul blinked, wiping the sleep from his eyes. "He can't."
"You know he can!" Sophie was sobbing, grabbing her clothes and filling her bag.
A knock came at Saul's door.
"Hey! Dad's coming,"Sal called from the other side.
"Fuck."Saul muttered under his breath while Sophie changed in the bathroom.
A few minutes later, Alexander was speaking to his youngest son out in the corridor.
"You know she has to go, Saul," He saw Saul in him and he knew whatever this offspring of his set his mind on, he was going to pursue it with every fiber of his being, "You have to let her go."
"I don't have to do shit,"Saul crossed his arms over his bare chest. He and Alexander were the same height and build and both stubborn.
"You want a war? I certainly don't!"Alexander stepped closer to Saul, "Eddie said he'd bring her back tomorrow."
Saul threw his hands up, "So, he's gonna beat her or God knows what and then send her back here?"
"You got too fucking close, Saul!" Alexander yelled, not noticing his other sons coming up behind him, "I don't care that you're fucking her, but what else is it? Why do you give a shit?"
"Because she's innocent, Dad."
"Of what? She's the enemy, son! Can't you see that? Can you not see that she's using you?"
Saul narrowed his eyes, looking passed him at his brothers, "I'm sure you've brainwashed them into thinking the same damn thing, right?"
Alexander peered over his shoulder and turned again to Saul, "Eddie sent her here for a reason. You think he doesn't pimp out these girls for his benefit?"
Saul shook his head, "You're wrong. You're gonna let this happen?"
"My hands are tied! It's the rules! Get her moving. Eddie's waiting at the gate."
Saul watched as his father stormed down the hall, his brothers surrounding him now.
"I'm sorry,"Micah said.
"Fuck you, Micah," Saul balled up his fists, "You've been an asshole to her ever since she arrived."
Gio and Frank looked at each other.
"Saul, don't fall for this chick,"Gio warned, "It's only going to end badly."
Frank nodded, "She's nice and all, but Dad's right. Don't think of her like that, bro. She's not meant to be a DeMarco—ever."
For some reason, Saul found pity in their eyes even though he tried to conceal how he truly felt.
"This is fucked up,"He reentered his room and found Sophie sitting at the foot of the bed, her bags on the floor at her feet.
"I don't know how long I'll be gone."
Saul was at her side, kneeling in front of her. He held her hands, but placed his head in her palms, allowing her to massage his face. He needed her touch. He needed all of her, but they didn't have time.
Putting on a shirt and his shoes, Saul chose his piece and slipped it into his holster.
"Dad and my brothers are going with us to meet them,"Saul told her, walking them both out into the hall where his siblings still lingered.
Sophie pulled herself closer to Saul as the other four walked behind them like they were leading her to her slaughter. Saul couldn't even hold her hand. He couldn't show his brothers how they felt for each other, but he did carry her bags for her.
"We'll take the Suburban,"Alexander was already at the garage door when they arrived.
Sophie didn't say anything, nor did she feel like moving, but Saul pushed her along gently—not that he wanted to, but because his father's expression said it all. He had to be ruthless, he had to act like he didn't care.
There was no talking during the drive down to the main gates. Gio was at the wheel, Alexander was in the passenger's side, Frank, Sal and Micah in the middle and Saul and Sophie were in the back. This time, Saul held her hand. He held it close to him and he made sure his eyes spoke for him.
"I love you," She mouthed to him, not allowing anyone but Saul to hear her.
"I love you,"Saul smiled. He had to be strong for her.
They could see the two vehicles parked at the gates. Swann soldiers, goons dressed in suits, some not, surrounding the cars, Eddie was standing in the middle—hit potbelly jiggling as he laughed at something his guard had said.
The DeMarco's and Sophie piled out of the Suburban. Sophie took her own bags this time.
"Alexander!"
"Eddie."
"I see my little niece is in one piece—for now," Eddie chuckled, "Saul hasn't destroyed her yet?"
Sophie lowered her gaze to the ground.
Alexander sighed, "No, I guess he hasn't."
Eddie nodded, "Well, there's more time when she gets back. I'm only taking her until tomorrow."
Sophie's heart skipped a beat. She'd only have to deal with the abuse for a little while and then she'd be back in Saul's arms!
"Are you sure you don't want her back for good?" Alexander asked.
Saul could have killed his father for that.
Eddie paused, "I thought about it. I like the fact that her sisters and mother are suffering, to be honest. Without them knowing what's happening to her, it's been such a madhouse at the Swann estate. One less fucking mouth to feed."
Saul seethed. How dare he talk about the love of his life this way?
"Well, I'd love to fucking stand out in this hot ass sun all day, but I have shit to do. Let's roll,"Eddie motioned for Sophie.
Saul took her arm and squeezed it gently.
Alexander looked to one of his guards to open the gates. Saul stood behind her now and placed a hand on her back. He needed to do it. He needed to let her know somehow that he wanted her to stay.
She walked through the open entrance. One of Eddie's men quickly took her bags to the trunk of one the cars.
Alexander stood right next to Saul now as they quietly watched as Eddie moved towards his niece. She braced for it, but when Eddie back handed her, Sophie still fell to the ground and she fell hard.
Saul pushed forward instinctively, but Alexander threw an arm out to block his son.
"You're a whore, Sophie,"Eddie said, "Nothing but a whore. Has it only been Saul or have you had a taste of all the DeMarco boys?"
Sophie cupped the side of her face, "Go to hell."
Eddie laughed like the maniac that he was, "Get her in the fucking car."
A soldier picked her up and dragged her to the closest car. She took one last look at Saul before being tossed into the backseat.
Eddie followed, "Bright and early tomorrow. I'll let you know. I just need a little Sophie time."
And off they went.
"Fuck!" Saul cried out as the cars sped away with Sophie in tow.
His brothers looked to him as he started walking away and back to the estate.
"Get in the car, Saul,"Micah ordered.
"No. I can fucking walk back."
Alexander shook his head, "Let him be."
Sophie was happy to see her sisters and mother, but the reunion was short lived. Eddie threw her in a cell right after she arrived.
"Give me something, Sophie!" Eddie pleaded, "You have to know something. You had to have seen something."
"I have no intel,"Sophie didn't budge.
Eddie spit on the floor in front of her, "That's because his dick is better than saving your family, right?"
"That's not true!"Sophie cried, "I don't know anything. They're still treating me like a ward. Everything is secured!"
Another hit across the face, knocking her off of the cot.
"Please stop..." She could taste blood pooling in her mouth.
"I'm sending you back because you'll get me something, eventually,"Eddie said, squatting at her side. He pulled her hair to tilt her head back so she could face him, "Saul will slip up, I'm sure."
"I might let you eat, but we'll see.." He motioned for the guard to let him out and Eddie was gone, leaving his niece bleeding on the floor.
"Can I get a rag?" Sophie asked the guard, "Please, Lonnie?"
Lonnie didn't move until she looked up at him with a battered face and tears streaming down her cheeks, "Sophie..."
"I just need a rag or a cloth or something, please?"
He reached into the storage closet behind him and grabbed some paper towels, handing her a few strips through the bars.
"Sophie, you know there's nothing I can do.."
"Don't..."Sophie shielded her face, "I already get it."
Lonnie was a friend of her father's, but he stayed on as security for the Swann's after Patrick's death.
A few hours later, no food had arrived for Sophie, but Suzy showed up as did their mother.
"I've missed your stupid face,"Suzy sobbed, reaching a hand through the bars as Sophie held onto it and the hand of her mother.
"Is Eddie in a bad mood?"
"Not really,"Lorraine smiled, "I did what I had to do."
Sex. She gave him herself.
"You'll be getting some food soon, sweetheart,"Lorraine was worn out. She was still such a beautiful woman, but she missed Patrick greatly. He was good to her and their girls.
"Dana, Ivy and Fiona are on a run,"Suzy told her.
"To where?"
"No!"
Eddie.
"I don't fucking think so,"He shook his head, coming down the stairs with Lonnie behnd him and one of the maids with a plate of food, "Do you forget we don't tell her anything until she gets back? I don't need to remind you, do I?"
Suzy sighed, "No, sir. I just forgot. Who is she going to tell?"
"Saul."
"I wouldn't jeopardize my family,"Sophie was angry. She was in love with Saul, but she still had her limits.
"I don't trust that, yet. Especially now that you've got no intel for me,"Eddie motioned for the maid to hand him the plate, shoving under the cell door, "Eat up." He looked at Lorraine and winked.
"Lonnie, you know the drill. Don't let them get out of hand,"Eddie laughed, "See you tomorrow, ladies."
"Are you OK with Saul?"Lorraine asked her, watching her daughter drink the apple juice provided.
"I am safer there than I am here, Mom."
Lorraine winced as did Suzy, but they both knew it was true.
"Is Loretta well?"
Sophie told them all that she'd been doing—excluding her love for Saul. Did Suzy already know? Could her mom tell?
"He saved you from the warehouse,"Suzy told her.
"What?"
"Saul's the one who got you out of there. He didn't want you to know that it wasn't Joe."
Sophie's face fell. She wasn't mad at Saul, but it made her feel incredibly depressed--depressed that her possibly future husband didn't even care to rescue her, yet he lied about it.
"Joe told me he got me out."
Suzy shook her head, "Who do you believe?"
Her heart was shattering. Suddenly, Sophie wasn't that hungry anymore.
"We're going to let you get some rest,"Lorraine said, "Lonnie will take care of you." She nodded to the giant behind them, "I love you, Sophie."
"I love you, too, Mom."
"I love you, big head,"Suzy laughed, waving as they walked away.
The lights went out in the cold lower level of the estate.
Sophie yawned as she watched Lonnie play on his phone.
All she could think about was how safe she was with Saul and how she wished she was in his arms.
Sophie rolled over in the cot so she was facing the wall. Her face hurt from the beating she'd taken earlier, but her heart hurt worse.
The morning couldn't come soon enough.
However, when it did come, Eddie wasn't alone when he came to retrieve his niece from the cell.
Joe was with him and he looked pissed.
