What Is This World Coming To?
"Are you sure you want to do this?" Phee looked at Tech as they stood in front of the gym doors. Tech nodded. "Yes. I do." Phee just shook her head. "Y'know... you could chicken out of this, and head to Math Club."
Tech felt his anger growing. "I'm doing this."
Phee backed away. "I didn't mean anything bad, brown eyes, just that you're more of a—"
"A what? A smarta**?"
"No! Brown eyes, I wouldn't call you that!"
"No? Then why aren't you supporting me on this?"
"It's just..." Phee fumbled for words. "Sports are Hunter's things."
"Then why don't you go watch him in all his masculinity play soccer!" Tech realized he was yelling at her. Phee turned around with an "okay" as she walked away from him, head down.
Tech felt his heart break into a million pieces. His legs trembled. He wanted desperately to call out to her that he was sorry for being a jerk but she was already running down the halls. Away from him.
Tech looked at the gym doors. He was one minute late. He took a deep breath and walked inside.
Coach looked at him. "Ay boys look what we got!" The coach was surrounded by sophomores and juniors and seniors. Tech was the only freshman. He did a small wave. Some of the juniors laughed. One of the seniors walked up to him and patted him on the back. "Hey freshie, welcome to the team." He handed Tech some pads and a helmet. The senior shook his hand. "My name is Jesse."
"My name is Tech."
"Cool name bro. You ever play hockey before?"
"No sir."
"Hey the only "sir" here is Coach. Coach Cody."
Tech managed to keep a straight face. "Coach... Cody?"
"Yeah." Jesse laughed. "The boys make fun of his name all the time. CC, we call 'im. These are the boys, we call ourselves 501st Legion, that's Kix over there, Hardcase, Cutup, Droidbait, and Fives." All five men waved at him. Tech waved back. Jesse led him over to his group. They put him on their team. As they played, Cutup whacked the puck at him. Instincts took over and Tech hit the puck into the opposing team's net. They had won. The 501st Legion all high-fived Tech and patted him on the back. Tech noticed something behind Hardcase. It was Phee. She had seen him win. Tech gulped and said to the 501st: "Um, can you excuse me a minute? I need to take care of something." They turned and saw Phee. Fives whistled. "So, your girl, eh?" Tech shrugged. "I'm not sure. We had a fight and..." He trailed off, before making his way over to Phee.
"Hey... uh... so... how was watching Hunter?"
"I didn't watch him. I saw you."
"Did you see—"
"Yes. I saw you win. Good job."
"Thanks."
As Tech and Phee had a very awkward conversation, Droidbait whispered to Fives; "Why is this so awkward?"
Tech scratched the back of his head. "Listen, Phee... um... about what happened out there—"
"Tech—"
"I wasn't my best self and um..."
"Tech listen—"
"I want to apologize for my behavior—"
"Tech I'm not happy with our relationship!"
Tech paused. "What?"
Phee took a deep breath. "I want a breakup."
Tech's heart shattered. "No..."
Phee hesitated, then turned around. "I'm sorry Tech, but... I'm not happy with you." She walked out of the gym. Tech collapsed on the floor and blacked out.
When Tech woke up, Jesse was leaning over him. "Hey, Tech, you okay?"
"No..." Tech whined. "I'm a loser."
"Hey now, no need for that." Cutup patted him on the head, making him whine more.
Fives glanced at him. "Can you call your mom or dad?"
"I don't have a dad."
"Oh... that's unfortunate. Can you call your mom?"
"No way! She'd overreact! I'll call my brother." Tech dialed Hunter's number. And Hardcase danced to the ringtone.
"What up bro?" Hunter's voice came from the phone. "How was Math Club, nerd?"
"Hunter. Math Club was fine... but I had an accident there and need you to come pick me up."
"I can't drive."
Jesse took the phone from Tech. "Hi. I'm Jesse. Tech's new friend. I can drop him off at off your house."
Hunter burst out laughing. "Tech made friends?" Tech immediately hung up on him. "Well that was no help at all."
Tech took note of his surroundings. "Where am I?"
"In my room." Jesse stated. Tech looked down and realized something. "Is...is this your bed too?"
"Yeah."
Tech jumped and scrambled out of bed. Jesse laughed. "Don't worry! I wasn't in the bed with you!"
Tech visibly relaxed. "Phew."
Jesse grabbed some keys and led Tech downstairs and out the door. Tech got in the passengers seat of the car. Jesse drove him home. "So... you took the breakup better than expected." Tech sniffled. "Don't remind me." They arrived at Tech's home. Mom ran out and hugged Tech. "Thank you so much for driving my baby home!" Jesse shrugged. "No problem. Math Club ran longer than expected, so I drove him home."
Tech looked at his friend who winked. Mom thanked him again and they headed inside. "Why didn't Phee drive you home?" Mom asked. Phee already had her drivers license. And a car.
"She was busy." Tech lied. Mom nodded. "So, Math Club was good?" Tech lied again. "Great! It was great!"
