Chapter 37: Wen Qing Goes Off
Wen Qing very carefully and deliberately set her cup down on the table without a sound. She slowly let her gaze travel to Jiang Fengmian and let it settle there. She hoped he could feel the heat of her anger boring into him through her eyes. This man. Wei Wuxian had so many words of praise for this man. He credited this man with a level of respect and gratitude that she was now certain he did not deserve.
Wen Qing did not know if it was wilful ignorance on the sect leader's part, or something more malicious. Nie Huaisang's testimony had been very clear regarding the damaging verbal assault of Yu Ziyuan towards Wei Wuxian. Wen Qing had given very clear information about Wei Wuxian's overall progress and presenting symptoms. She had answered numerous questions about his treatment and concerns related to the proposed courtship. She had been painfully clear how instrumental Lan Wangji had been to Wei Wuxian's safety and recovery.
"Wei Wuxian is suffering severe symptoms that have developed in response to repeated trauma. I have until now been extremely delicate and polite in my implications regarding the source of this trauma. However, I would not be worth my reputation as a doctor if I did not step in to correct the obvious misunderstanding this seems to have caused." Wen Qing kept her voice low and steady. Articulating each word with the utmost precision.
"Wei Wuxian has been traumatized within Lotus Pier." Wen Qing made sure each of those words sunk in but did not pause long enough for anyone to feel it was their turn to speak. It was not their turn to speak. It was hers.
"Wei Wuxian's feelings of worthlessness are so severe that he firmly believes that his existence does nothing but bring others harm. He has no value for his own safety or well being. He experiences such severe distress over upsetting someone he cares about that he completely breaks down. As such, unless someone stops him, he will repeatedly actively harm himself to accommodate even the mildest discomforts of others.
"Today was a very clear example of some of what has brought Wei Wuxian to this point. Anyone here can attest that Wei Wuxian was doing much better this morning than when we just went to see him this afternoon. This afternoon is the worst I have seen him since his suicide attempt. He was severely dissociated and Lan Wangji was the only one who was able to get through to him. Dissociation is a very common response to trauma. In order to protect itself, Wei Wuxian's mind tried to separate him from what was happening around him. This happened when Madam Yu was screaming at him. Something I suspect you consider normal, but which I can assure you is not.
"We were given a rather detailed account of what was said and I can categorize all of it under specific examples of emotional abuse. If you'd like to disagree with me we can spend the rest of the day breaking down the full details and exactly how they impact and damage a person's psyche. I could probably even do a decent job of breaking down some of the behaviours of other family members here that contribute to Wei Wuxian's current state. I'll spare you from the detailed version for the moment and just describe some broad strokes. From the victims perspective, other people ignoring or allowing these things to continue solidifies in the victim's mind that they deserve this treatment. It makes them feel like everyone agrees with it, otherwise why would others let it happen. It makes them feel like no one cares about them. They start to question if the abuse is actually their fault, or if it is mistreatment at all. They stop seeking or accepting help, because they don't believe they should receive it." Wen Qing could see a few people considering opening their mouths to respond, but she did not give them the chance.
"Wei Wuxian currently has little to no ability to set limits with anyone for his own safety. He considers himself responsible for Jiang Wanyin's emotions and readily harms himself for the sake of calming Jiang Wanyin. Maybe because of this or maybe for other reasons Jiang Wanyin seems to struggle to regulate his own emotions and regularly puts that responsibility on Wei Wuxian.
"Taking Wei Wuxian back to Lotus Pier not only takes Wei Wuxian away from crucial supports, like Lan Wangji. It also forces him back into the exact environment that brought him to this point to begin with. That includes the behaviour of those in Lotus Pier which was instrumental in causing this damage." Wen Qing's felt like her body was vibrating with rage. The fury laced in her every word was restrained only by her careful and deliberately controlled volume. Wen Qing suspected the second she started to raise her voice she would lose what little control she still had over her anger. She felt like she could erupt at the slightest fluctuation, consequences be damned.
"Sect Leader Jiang, are you truly unaware of what has been happening to Wei Wuxian, or are you just trying to ignore it? I heard Madam Yu seemed to believe you treat Wei Wuxian with great affection, but you don't seem to care for his safety enough to even shield him from mistreatment. For Wei Wuxian that can only feel like you are either abandoning him or condoning it." Wen Qing was so furious she was shaking. Never in her life had she wanted to do violence against someone so badly. With a shaky breath she continued.
"I can not accurately convey the sheer amount of work it will take for Wei Wuxian to recover. He has to learn how to cope with symptoms. He has to identify things that trigger said symptoms. He will need to do extensive work to reduce the impact of those triggers so that they do not interfere with his life. He has to develop something resembling self worth. He will have to work very hard to change the behaviours that have reinforced his symptoms. To do all this and ask him to do it in the location that inflicted the damage? Not only that but where the trauma will undoubtedly be repeated since he was subjected to abuse even here because of a visit.
"If your goal is to kill Wei Wuxian this will certainly do the job, Sect Leader Jiang, but there are many faster and more humane ways to accomplish that. Further I believe I have been clear enough now that Zewu-Jun and Xiansheng can understand that allowing Wei Wuxian to return would be sentencing Lan-er-gonzi's betrothed to mistreatment and death. My understanding is this should not be something deemed appropriate by GusuLan Sect or YunmengJiang Sect." Wen Qing sat back and let her burning gaze scan each person in the room slowly.
"The audacity. Is this how QishanWen Sect trains its disciples?" Yu Ziyuan snapped. Wen Qing turned her burning gaze right back to Yu Ziyuan. She bowed slowly and politely with her rage burning brightly in her eyes.
"If Madam Yu has any issue with my behaviour I welcome her to bring her complaints to my sect leader." Wen Qing's voice was perfectly polite, but the burning rage was still vibrating through her tone. Wen Qing then deliberately turned toward Lan Qiren.
"I believe it is possible I may have broken a few of the rules of Cloud Recesses during this discussion. I apologize to Xiansheng and will gladly accept punishment following my next check of my patients condition." Wen Qing bowed respectfully to Lan Qiren and only rose when he acknowledged her apology with a nod of his head. Dead silence fell over the room until it was at last broken by Yu Ziyuan standing abruptly.
"A-Cheng. A-Li. Come with me. We're not needed for this talk." Yu Ziyuan shot a glare at Jiang Fengmian. "Deal with this yourself Fengmian. Decide how much trouble you wish to let that brat bring to our sect." With that Yu Ziyuan marched out the door with her two children in tow.
Wen Qing was still seething. She wished to leave the room and find somewhere to calm down before checking on Wei Wuxian, but she wasn't willing to risk it. She had gone far beyond the normal bounds of politeness and political delicacy. She had been disrespectful, and she didn't care. She'd sit here and boil until she finally heard both sides agree to Wei Wuxian staying in Cloud Recesses. She did not trust that her words would be considered. There was a chance they would choose to awkwardly ignore what she said, and she was going to be damn certain they could not.
After a painfully long silence Jiang Fengmian let out a deep sigh. He looked defeated as he finally let go of whatever reason he had to insist on taking Wei Wuxian to Lotus Pier. He bowed politely to Lan Xichen and Lan Qiren.
"Please take good care of A-Xian." Lan Xichen was quick to respond to Jiang Fengmian's words of surrender.
"Of course. Wuxian will be looked after with the utmost care. Wangji would accept nothing less for him." Lan Xichen said with a polite smile. Jiang Fengmian nodded in acknowledgement. Wen Qing was quick to head toward the door once the meeting ended.
"Wen-guniang." She was stopped from leaving by Lan Xichen calling for her. She turned her attention to him wordlessly. "I assume you plan to check on Wuxian. Could I speak with you for just a moment first?" Lan Xichen requested. Wen Qing frowned slightly but nodded. She really needed a few minutes to herself to calm down, and she was not thrilled about the continued delay of that. The two of them went outside and Lan Xichen led her to an empty pavilion. Wen Qing focused on the scents in the air outside, the texture of the railing that her hands were gripping. She used these to ground herself and help calm her still heightened emotions.
"I just wanted to see if you were alright. You seemed to be unusually enraged." Lan Xichen said gently. Wen Qing did not have the energy left to fabricate an excuse or in some way soothe his concerns. She looked Lan Xichen in the eyes. She was filled with anger, concern, and bone aching fatigue. She wasn't sure if all of that was in her gaze or not, but Lan Xichen looked alarmed.
"Zewu-Jun." She spoke quietly, her voice weary but still heated by her slowly receding anger. "Sometime soon we will need to have a very long conversation. Until then, I need to go check on my patient."
