Chapter 20: The Infirmary

Lan Wangji wasn't certain how to answer Lan Xichen's question. Did he talk about the multiple breakdowns? Wei Wuxian crying himself to sleep? The turmoil of his interactions with Jiang Wanyin? The horrible future Wei Wuxian had endured? Lan Wangji looked toward Wen Qing for guidance. It was starting to become a habit to look to her for assistance when it came to Wei Wuxian. Wen Qing gave him a reassuring smile before she turned to Lan Xichen.

"Better than I expected to be honest." Wen Qing's voice was calm and confident as she spoke. "It's been a rough morning." Wen Qing's strong confident voice sounded tired. Lan Wangji felt a bit guilty for putting the burden of explaining on her. She was up last night calming Wei Wuxian down when he first woke up. Then she was in this morning. When she wasn't calling down Wei Wuxian she was strategizing how to help him or talking Lan Wangji through his own anxieties. Just when she was going to leave and take some time for herself Lan Xichen arrived wanting answers too.

"Is Wei-gongzi still suicidal?" Lan Xichen asked. Wen Qing gave him a complicated look.

"I don't believe he is actively suicidal right now, but that isn't to say that the wrong stressor can't put was back where we started." Wen Qing said point blank. Lan Xichen visibly wilted. Wen Qing took a calming breath. "He has accepted support from Lan Wangji. Which did take some doing on Lan Wangji's part, but is a fantastic development. He may try to pull away again in the future, but I believe Lan Wangji is stubborn enough to deal with that." Wen Qing took pity on Lan Xichen as she tried to reassure him a bit. She had a small amused smile on her face as she spoke the last sentence.

Lan Wangji tightened his arms around Wei Wuxian so much that a small sound of complaint came from beneath the outer layer of Lan Wangji's robes. Hearing Wei Wuxian's quiet protest, Lan Wangji immediately relaxed his hold. Wen Qing's affectionate smile grew. When she looked back at Lan Xichen she saw a soft expression on his face. It seemed once he was over his shock he was quite happy with the development between the two cuddling in front of them. After a long pause Lan Xichen seemed to gather his thoughts.

"I see the Jiang siblings are not here. Did Wei-gongzi get a chance to see them yet today?" Lan Xichen asked. Lan Wangji and Wen Qing immediately reacted to the question. Lan Xichen thought this had been a very ordinary and reasonable question. Yet somehow asking this question had resulted in Wen Qing and his didi immediately reacting in a bizarrely similar fashion. As Lan Xichen looked between Wen Qing and Lan Wangji he tried to decipher the meaning behind their expressions. Both had suddenly become rigid and their eyes swirled with hesitance, concern, and something akin to displeasure. Lan Xichen was growing increasingly confused.

"Is there something between Wei-gongzi and the Jiang siblings that I need to know about?" Lan Xichen asked, his voice laced with concern. Lan Wangji directed his gaze toward the table. A clear sign that he was upset about something, but did not wish to speak. Wen Qing took a steadying breath and sipped her tea.

"Wei Wuxian had very strong reactions to his siblings." Wen Qing began. Lan Xichen turned to her. Instantly relieved that he did not need to try and get his brother to speak about something he did not want to. "I think saying he was distraught is an accurate enough word for it. He was not willing to discuss his suicide attempt or anything that was bothering him with them. Jiang Yanli respected this and he was eventually able to calm down around her."

'I suppose that isn't too unusual. Since his family was not aware it was already an indicator that he had not shared his difficulties with them.' Lan Xichen commented silently as he nodded his head in acknowledgement.

"Jiang Wanyin was..." Wen Qing paused. The urge to give voice to all of her resentment towards Jiang Wanyin filled her chest. She steadied herself again. She bought herself time to calm down by slowly drinking her tea. "Jiang Wanyin yelled at Wei Wuxian and stormed out leaving Wei Wuxian in a state of extreme distress. He reacted poorly to Wei Wuxian not being ready to talk with him about what happened. He also did not react well to Wei Wuxian seaking out Lan Wangji for support. Jiang Yanli promised to talk with Jiang Wanyin, but did not specify what exactly she planned to say." Wen Qing was quite proud of herself for only having a disapproving and unhappy tone in her voice. She had not slandered Jiang Wanyin's character. She had not expressed that she felt he should not be allowed near Wei Wuxian without Wei Wuxian's explicit request. She had not said any of the many insults she had begun to use in the privacy of her own thoughts.

Lan Xichen's expression held deep concern when she finished her explanation. He was aware that the Jiang heir had a bit of a forceful personality. Lan Xichen had seen many instances of mock fighting between Jiang Wanyin and Wei Wuxian. He had also overheard many words spoken in a disapproving tone and various scoldings. Since Wei Wuxian always smiled and laughed at these, Lan Xichen had assumed it was a normal part of their dynamic. True Lan Xichen could not imagine scolding Lan Wangji in such a way. Nor could he imagine striking Lan Wangji, even in gest. However the joy and affection had seemed genuine and he did not wish to judge the relationships of others by his own.

'Is this another instance where I ignored a problem?' Lan Xichen felt a stab of guilt. Was this another example of bullying that Lan Xichen had let slide under his watch? True he could do nothing about how they were at Lotus Pier, but the Jiang siblings and Wei Wuxian were currently in Cloud Recesses. Surely there was something he could have done.

'I should discuss this with Wei-gongzi's guardians. I need to find out if this is routine behavior.' Lan Xichen thought to himself.

"Do you want us to wake him so you can speak with him?" Wen Qing asked after a prolonged silence. Lan Xichen was startled from his own thoughts. It took him a moment to process what she said before he shook his head.

"No need. I don't wish to add to his stress by making him feel interrogated. My questions can wait." Lan Xichen said as he tried to give his best calm and reassuring smile. "Let him get some proper rest and a chance to relax a bit first. Wen-guniang, please continue to act in his best interest and keep me informed on his condition." Lan Xichen requested. Wen Qing bit back a slight flash of anger at someone feeling like they needed to tell her to take care of her didi. It wasn't Lan Xichen's fault. He did not know the relationship between her and Wei Wuxian. From Lan Xichen's perspective she was a doctor. He didn't understand she was also Wei Wuxian's Jie.

"Of course." She said in a polite and professional tone.

"Xiongzhang." Lan Xichen paused when Lan Wangji addressed him. He had just stood to leave, but now he remained where he was waiting for his didi to say what he needed to say. Lan Wangji's arms tightened around Wei Wuxian again and he hesitantly glanced up at Lan Xichen. Lan Xichen's gaze softened when he saw the look in his brother's eyes.

"Wangji. You should stay close to Wei-gongzi." Lan Xichen said, smiling gently at his didi.

"Shufu." Lan Wangji said hesitantly. Lan Wangji did not need to say more for Lan Xichen to understand what he meant. Lan Xichen felt his own anxiety spike, but he did his best to be calm and reassuring.

"You can leave Shufu to me." Lan Xichen watched Lan Wangji's eyes fill with relief and gratitude. Lan Xichen felt warm inside. Lan Wangji rarely asked for anything. Lan Xichen tried his best to guess what Lan Wangji might want or need, but his didi never made it easy. Lan Xichen had always wanted to see Lan Wangji happy. It had been a goal he had pursued for a long time with little success. It made Lan Xichen so happy to see Lan Wangji finally ask for something. To finally express something he wanted. To finally see something make his didi feel happy.

"Xiongzhang. Thank you." Lan Xichen gave Lan Wangji perhaps the biggest smile he had ever given him.

"I'll also begin the process for an official proposal to the Jiang sect." Lan Xichen added. He was rewarded when Lan Wangji's eyes went slightly wide and a small beautiful smile graced his didi's normally stoic face. Lan Xichen gave a final smile before he departed. He had a lot of work to do. Perhaps it was also good for Lan Xichen to wait a few days before sitting and talking with Wei Wuxian himself. Lan Xichen needed the time.

After the soft footsteps had vanished Lan Wangji turned to Wen Qing.

"Why did you not mention the future?" Lan Wangji asked. Wen Qing gave Lan Wangji a tired smile.

"A-Ying is tired. I am tired. I still need to identify an appropriate memory that will convince Zewu-Jun of our words. I think we could all use a couple days before we dive into all of that. We have seven months. A few days won't make that much of a difference." This was the first time Lan Wangji heard the fatigue in Wen Qing's voice. The first time she had allowed him to see the strain that she must have been under this entire time.

"Thank you." Lan Wangji said at last. Wen Qing smiled and nodded her head.

"I'll be in my room of the infirmary or the infirmary proper if you need me. If I need to step out I'll let you know first." Wen Qing said with a smile. Lan Wangji gave her a questioning look. Wen Qing's gaze fell on Wei Wuxian. "I don't want A-Ying to be left without one of us at his side. So if you need to step away for any reason I want to be available to sit with him until you come back."

Lan Wangji could not find his words to express how happy he was to hear that. He did not want to leave Wei Wuxian's side at all, but he knew it was impossible to guarantee such things. He was relieved to be offered an option such as this without even needing to ask. Wen Qing smiled gently at the sleeping figure in Lan Wangji's arms then left. Lan Wangji never found the words to appropriately convey the depths of his gratitude, but strangely he felt that Wen Qing may have already guessed them. She did not read him as well as Lan Xichen did, but he got the distinct impression that she might achieve a similar ability.
