SYDNEY WAS NEVER ONE FOR DRAMA, ALWAYS OPTING TO STAY AS FAR AWAY FROM IT AS SHE COULD. She never liked getting involved in other people's issues and problems and never liked having any of her own, if she could help it at least. So when the cast had shown up at her house that evening for pre drinks before they all went out and Rudy was nowhere to be seen, Sydney realised that she had to do something about it.
Of course they all questioned why he wasn't there, although it was rather obvious. But that then ended up in a discussion about what had gone on with Sydney and Rudy recently. And their friends had a lot to say about the situation and they had a lot of opinions.
Sydney hadn't actually spoken to Rudy since the Skiing trip. Not a single word had been said between the two and neither had planned on breaking the ice first to patch things up.
Chase had thought it was ridiculous that the two still weren't talking and thought it was even more ridiculous when Sydney told him what she'd said to Rudy in her hotel room. About how she didn't think he was over what had happened between them all those years ago and how they weren't actually friends. Which, thinking back on it, Sydney didn't actually mean. She was angry and annoyed and just wanted to make a point. Which was that they were forced into a situation that neither of them had wanted, and that maybe they rushed into becoming friends.
An argument almost broke out between the two, Sydney thought that Chase had been defending Rudy a little too much. She wasn't the bad guy in the situation but he was making her out to be. Of course, Madelyn and Madison came to her defence but Sydney hated the fact that the situation even rose in the first place.
They shouldn't have been hanging out without Rudy firstly, and Sydney felt awful about it, and they definitely didn't need arguments starting between them over the situation.
It was the drama that Sydney had spent her whole life trying to avoid and now she was right in the middle of it. And she was the only person who could fix it.
The plan between the six friends was that they were all going to a bar, specifically a karaoke bar, in downtown LA for the night. They hadn't seen each other in weeks and were all in desperate need for some fun. So after pre drinks at Sydney's apartment, they had left to head to the bar. Two Uber's had been ordered for them but unbeknown to the others, Sydney had ordered her own.
When it had turned up before the other cars, Sydney had to explain to them why. She couldn't deal with it anymore and needed to be the bigger person. What she was about to do, she should've done weeks prior.
Sydney had ordered an Uber to go to Rudy's apartment. Alone. Everyone was more than surprised at the girls decision to go see Rudy but they all agreed that it was for the best. So Sydney headed to Rudy's apartment alone and was planning on meeting the rest of them at the bar after, hopefully with Rudy. If she could even convince him to join her.
The girl had been rather glad she'd consumed some alcohol before going to see her ex boyfriend at his apartment. It definitely calmed her nerves and was probably giving her the courage to do it in the first place.
Rudy had obviously been aware what his friends were up to that night so getting a knock on his apartment door and finding Sydney the other side was rather shocking. So much so that he's lost his breath for a few seconds.
"Sydney? W-What are you doing here?" Sydney was supposed to be out with their friends, not standing at his apartment door with a unreadable expression across her face. Rudy couldn't understand it.
Sydney had to force a smile across her face. "Do you think I could come in and we could talk?" She asked him, hoping he wouldn't turn her away.
Rudy frowned but was quick to hide it and let Sydney into his apartment. "I guess, yeah. Come in." He told her, moving to the side to let the girl in.
"Thank you." Sydney had mumbled as she entered his apartment, finding herself walking through a small hallway that lead to an open planned kitchen and living room. Sydney stopped in the the middle of the room and turned around to face Rudy, but she didn't say anything. Her eyes were darting around the room, looking at all the things he had in his apartment. She was distracting herself from what she needed to do.
"Are you okay?" Rudy had noticed that she looked a little pale, despite the fact that her face was covered in makeup. She didn't look like her usual self either, making Rudy worry a little.
But it was all just nerves. "Yeah, sorry. I just, I don't know how to start this." Sydney said, her eyes snapping back up to meet his. Her fingers had then began to fiddle with the threads coming apart on her jeans. She then took a deep breath in before she started to speak. "Okay, you're just going to listen for a second, alright? Just let me talk and get this off my chest and then you're welcome to do whatever. Kick me out, shout at me. I don't care. I just need to tell you how I feel." Sydney told Rudy, letting him know that he was welcome to do either of those things to her, shout or kick her out, but only when she was finished. She needed to make her peace and then she didn't have to worry anymore.
"What I said, when we were at the Ski Resort, I didn't mean it. You have to know that I didn't mean it. I was just angry and upset and I say things I don't mean." Sydney needed Rudy to know that she didn't mean what she said, even if there was a little truth behind her words. "I mean, you out of anyone should know that." Rudy knew exactly how Sydney could be when she was angry, she spoke before she thought. Often ending the same way as before, her saying things she didn't mean. "I don't think you're still hung up on what happened between us and I definitely don't think that our friendship was forced or fake." It was cruel of her to say those things to him, accuse him of not being over her or what happened. And saying that their friendship wasn't real, when it was. It was a different kind of friendship, but no less real than any of the others.
Sydney had taken another deep breath in. "I care about you, so much. I always will, no matter what. That's never going to change. You'd have to do a lot of bad things for me to stop caring about you." Sydney saw Rudy's face soften at her words. His heart had also skipped a beat at her words, but Rudy was glad she wouldn't notice that. "And I hate that I probably hurt you after what I said. I hate myself for saying those things to you. I never wanted to hurt you. Not then and definitely not when we broke up. The last thing I want to do is hurt you." Sydney never liked hurting the people she loved and cared about, which was why she actively tried avoiding doing so but with Rudy, she felt as though she was doing the opposite. And he felt the exact same. "I know we didn't end on the best terms and I know that really hurt us both and maybe we both still hold grudges against each other or whatever but you're still someone that's special to me." He would always be special to her. "You're one of the only few people that actually know me, truly. And maybe that scares me a little, and that's why I got so angry. But it's true. You'll always be someone special to me, no matter what. Those two years didn't not mean anything to me, okay?" Sydney didn't want Rudy thinking that the two years they spent together didn't mean anything to her anymore, they meant more than he'd ever realise. "I just need you to know that." Sydney said, sighing as if she'd been holding her breath the whole time. "And I'm sorry." She added, seeing the end of Rudy's mouth twitch up in a smile.
"Wow." He laughed out in disbelief. He'd never heard Sydney say so much about how she had felt before. It was strange but he was glad she had done it.
"That was a lot, I'm sorry." Sydney laughed along with him, shaking her head and diverting her eyes to the floor. She suddenly felt her face heat up in embarrassment and she tried to hide it but Rudy saw.
He closed the gap between the two, almost standing toe to toe with Sydney. "No, hey. It's okay." Rudy reached up and placed his hands on her arms, ones covered by the coat she had been wearing. "I feel the exact same way, just so you know. And I'm so fucking sorry for everything I said. I'll never forgive myself for saying those things to you." Rudy's voice was quiet, almost a whisper.
"It's okay. I forgive you. We can just forget about all of that." Sydney shook her head, she didn't want him to still feel guilty. It wasn't worth it. Not in her eyes. "I want to forget about it." Sydney told him and Rudy simply nodded.
Sydney's next actions surprised Rudy, a lot, but he definitely wasn't complaining when he felt Sydney's arms wrap around his neck to pull him into a hug. He immediately wrapped his arms around her small frame, pulling her in closer. "I'm really glad I still have you in my life." Sydney's voice was a whisper but Rudy heard it loud and clear.
He couldn't fight the smile that worked its way onto his face before he spoke back to her. "Me too."
When the two adults pulled away from each other, they sent the other a smile. A smile that let them both know that they were okay. Sydney was then taking a few steps back, as if she was about to leave. "So, you coming with us or what?" But she hadn't left, instead had asked Rudy if he was going to join her to meet up with the others.
She knew Chase had asked him more than once about joining them that night, and he'd said no twice because of Sydney. Now, he didn't have an excuse.
"You want me to come?" Rudy wasn't expecting Sydney to ask him.
"Of course I do." Sydney said, smiling. "Now go get changed." She had then pushed him away playfully, ready to wait for him to change out of his hoodie and sweatpants into something more appropriate for a night out.
Rudy didn't take long to change his clothes and before they knew it, they were arriving at the bar that their friends had been at for the past half hour. Madelyn was the first to spot Sydney as she walked in with Rudy. "Hey! There she is!" Madelyn shouted out before her eyes focused on Rudy. "And Rudy is with her...." Clear confusion laced in her voice. This made everyone else sitting around Madelyn turn their heads in the direction of the entrance to see Sydney walking in with Rudy.
The two had approached the group, awkward smiles across their faces in fear that their friends were going to say something. They had all certainly looked confused and shocked.
"Explain." Madelyn had immediately said once Sydney and Rudy were in earshot.
Sydney stopped in front of Madelyn. "We just had a chat. Everything's fine now." That was all Sydney wanted to tell them. She certainly didn't need to go into details, at least not to the whole group.
"Everything's fine? Like you guys just made up?" Chase asked, wanting to make sure.
Both had nodded. "Yeah. We did. It's not worth not talking anymore, so we're all good." Sydney told him, making Chase smile. He was glad they were okay again, it was all he had wanted.
So the group of friends had a good night out, not having to worry about saying the wrong thing or having to watch out for an argument arising between the two adults. Everything was perfect. But Rudy couldn't help but notice his sudden feelings grow. Feelings he'd only just realised in the past few weeks and ones he'd wished stayed away. Ones that he made sure to hide as he watched Sydney and Madison belt out the lyrics to You Belong With Me by Taylor Swift on the karaoke.
