THIRTY FIVE — ( WORKAHOLIC ! )

EVERYONE BEING SURPRISED THAT SYDNEY HAD TURNED UP JUST BEFORE THEY STARTED THEIR TRIP TO THE SKIING RESORT WAS AN UNDERSTATEMENT. No one had suspected a thing and couldn't believe Drew had managed to keep it a secret too. But they'd all been over the moon that she was joining them, well mostly everyone.

Rudy felt sick. He didn't know what he was supposed to do now that Sydney was there. Of course he was happy that everyone else was glad she was there but he really wished she had just gone to Paris. It would've saved him a very awkward conversation that he knew he had to have with her now that they were going to be together all weekend. But he wouldn't even know where to start with the conversation. Obviously, he needed to apologise but how? He wasn't sure what to say, how to truly explain how sorry he was for hurting Sydney, again.

The group of friends were driving up in two cars. Chase driving one and Madison driving the other. So obviously Madelyn chose to drive up with Chase, and then so did Rudy. Jonathan chose then to drive up with Madison, Austin too. Drew then was going with Madison, Jonathan and Austin, obviously. Which left Elaine with the others. And yes, they had invited Elaine to make up the numbers when Sydney had cancelled, which Sydney couldn't say she was over the moon with. The girl just didn't like her and Sydney had no clue as to why, she'd never done a single thing to make her feel that way but it was just how it was.

So four in each car. But then with Sydney arriving last minute, she had to choose which group to sit in a car with for hours upon hours. It was a no-brainer really, as much as she loved Madelyn, Sydney couldn't be in a car with Rudy. And was how Sydney ended up situated between Drew and Austin for almost 5 hours but she certainly wasn't complaining. They were perfect company, as were Madison and Jonathan. The five adults had fun driving up to the mountains as they played games and sung along to each other's Spotify playlists.

But the same couldn't have been said for the others. Firstly, Madelyn didn't shut up about Sydney for a while when they first started driving. She was so excited about her being there but the only other person in the car that seemed to share her excitement was Chase. Then while they were on the topic of Sydney, Madelyn decided to ask Rudy if he was going to attempt to apologise which lead to an argument breaking out between the two. Let's just say, it was a very awkward drive for a while after that.

THE SITUATION WASN'T IDEAL BUT SYDNEY WASN'T ACTUALLY TOO BOTHERED BEING THE ONLY PERSON WHO WAS STAYING IN A ROOM ON HER OWN. Because she had booked her own room without the others knowledge, she ended up staying on her own while the others were all sharing with at least one other person. The three girls were sharing a room together, Drew and Austin were sharing a room and then Chase, Jonathan and Rudy were all sharing another room together.

Obviously, they'd tried to change everything around so that someone would stay with Sydney but she insisted that it was fine. They'd paid for their rooms and didn't want anyone downgrading just for her. She'd lost count the amount of times that Madison had offered to stay with her, leaving Madelyn and Elaine alone in their room. But Sydney persuaded Madison that it wasn't necessary, it's not like she'd be in her room much anyway.

But after their first day there, that Thursday evening, they had decided to head into town and go out for dinner so Sydney had been in her room alone getting ready. And for that hour she was alone for, she'd really wished then she'd taken up Madison's offer for her to stay with her.

There was a knock at Sydney's door and she'd just assumed maybe it was just someone knocking to let her know that they were ready, that they'd meet her down in the lobby. That was till she had checked the time and realised it was too early for that. So then Sydney thought maybe it was Madison or Madelyn knocking. But it wasn't. It was the last person she had wanted to see standing behind the wooden door.

When Sydney had swung the door open, she hadn't expected to see Rudy standing on the other side. So much so that her eyes had widened quite noticeably. "Oh......hey." Sydney's voice was quiet but Rudy could still hear the almost viscous tone behind her voice.

And Rudy couldn't even force himself to smile, he was so nervous. "H-Hi, I was thinking maybe we could talk?" He thought talking before they had to spend the whole weekend together was better than waiting.

"Talk?" Sydney's eyebrows were pulled together.

Rudy nodded. "Yeah, if that's okay. And if not, then that's cool." Sydney definitely didn't need to talk to him, not after what happened. But Rudy really hoped it was okay, he needed to speak to her.

Sydney had to fight the panic rising inside of her as her heart began hammering against her chest. She felt like she might throw up right there but she knew she needed to hear Rudy out if they were ever going to move on from what happened. "No, uh, we can talk. Come in." Sydney moved to the side to let the boy in before she closed the door behind him and lead him further into her room. Sydney sat down on the armchair that was placed in the middle of the room, by the fireplace that all of the rooms had, that was also beside a sofa.

Rudy had sat down on the brown leather sofa but was quiet, for a while. It was like he wasn't sure what to say or how to start but Sydney thought it should've been pretty simple. All he had to do was start with an apology. Which was what he was doing when he finally opened his mouth to talk. "First of all, I want to say I'm sorry. There's no excuse for how I acted and what I said. And if I could take it back, I would." Rudy told the girl, who had been curled up in the armchair she was perched on, wearing a dressing gown as she fiddled with the belt around her waist.

Sydney thought that an apology would make her feel better and it would be a good start but it didn't, it almost made her want to laugh. "But you can't." She had answered with, causing Rudy to let out a sigh. He couldn't even blame her for being so cold with him, he deserved it all and a lot worse.

"I know." Rudy's voice had broke as he spoke, a lump forming in the back of his throat. Sydney almost thought he was going to cry. "God, this is harder than I thought." His next sentence was quieter but Sydney could still hear him as he ran his hands over his face.

She had wanted to laugh. That was Sydney's first reaction to Rudy's words. How could he even say that to her? "This is hard for you?" Sydney asked and it was clear in the tone of her voice that she was stopping herself from laughing.

"I don't know how to explain to you how awful I feel." It was hard for Rudy to explain how he felt but he knew how stupid it must've sounded to Sydney. But it was true. He'd let jealousy and anger cloud his mind for less than five minutes and he'd hurt Sydney in the process.

"That should be pretty easy." And it should have been, but it wasn't. Sydney's words were harsh and Rudy could see she was getting angry at him. Which he didn't want.

"Syd...."

"No, it should be." Sydney had almost shouted. "Do you have any idea how you made me feel? How embarrassing it was?" Sydney had twisted in her seat to look at Rudy properly. "Jesus Christ, it was humiliating. I've never felt like that in my life." Sydney told him, feeling herself beginning to get upset. Her eyes glossed over with tears but she quickly got rid of them and looked back towards the fireplace.

"I know and I'm sorry. I never meant to make you feel like that."

"No, Rudy, you don't know." He didn't know anything. "I bet no one has ever made you feel like that before." Being humiliated like that in front of friends by someone you trusted was another level of pain.

"I'm sorry."

"Sorry isn't going to cut it." Rudy could say sorry a million times over but it wasn't going to help the way Sydney was feeling and it wasn't going to help the fact that Sydney couldn't get over it if she didn't know why he did what he did. "You really hurt me. I-I don't even know what to say." Sydney was at a loss for words at this point.

Rudy had just wanted to make it right, he needed to know how to fix the mess he'd created. "Tell me how I can fix this." He would've done anything Sydney asked.

Again, Sydney felt like laughing. "Fix this? A forced friendship? What's the point? You're clearly not over what happened between us and I don't know what else I'm supposed to do about that. We talked about it, that's all I can do." Sydney knew it was a bold accusation, accusing him of not being over what happened between the two but it was the only reasoning that made sense to her.

"A forced friendship? What is that even supposed to mean?" Rudy asked her, his eyebrows pulled together in the most confused facial expression Sydney had ever seen on him. "And who said I'm not over what happened? Why would you even think that?" He couldn't believe she'd even say that to him. Now they had both said things they didn't really mean.

"We're only friends because we worked together. We never would've spoken again if it wasn't for that and you know it. We just sucked it up and became friends for the sake of everyone else and filming." Even though she hated to say it, Sydney was right. They forced themselves to become friends and to get along. They had no other choice. But while doing that, they had formed a real friendship, eventually, but that didn't take away from the reason it had started. "And it's obvious you're not over it after what you said. Bringing up what happened between us in front of all of our friends." If Rudy was really over it, Sydney going to Paris wouldn't have bothered him so much.

"You really think that?" Rudy asked her, his voice and his face softening.

Sydney pursed her lips and nodded. "Yeah, I do."

And then suddenly, Rudy's whole demeanour changed. "Well, for your information, I am over it."

"Yeah, sure seems like it." Sydney had said, rolling her eyes at his defensive words.

"Maybe it's you who's not over it."

"I'm not the one who brought it up in front of all our friends while celebrating one of their birthdays!" Sydney was never one to shout, especially not in an argument but Rudy was making it really hard for her not to get angry at him. So much so that she'd resorted to raising her voice so much that she was worried people staying in the rooms beside her would hear.

Even Rudy had never seen Sydney shout before. "Is that why you came this weekend, because of what I said?" He hated to think that she had.

"No. I did this because I wanted to spend time with my friends." It wasn't a complete lie but Sydney couldn't deny that there was a little truth to Rudy's words.

"But you love Paris." Rudy would never forget the trip they'd taken to Paris for their one year anniversary, the first time Sydney had ever even been. He'd never forget how happy she was that whole weekend. From seeing the Eiffel Tower to walking down the lit up streets of Paris in the dark. So the fact that she had missed out on all of that again just because of what he'd said, it broke his heart.

"Yeah, I do."

"Then why didn't you go?" Rudy couldn't understand it.

She couldn't keep lying any longer. "Fine! It was because of you! To prove to you that I'm not the person you think I am." Sydney snapped. She hated that she had admitted it to him of all people but it was part of the truth. Sydney adored her job, loved what she did more than most things in life. Sometimes she felt like she did work too much but it was hard to say no when she did love it so much. And she had known ever since her and Rudy broke up that it was the reason why they didn't work out in the end. Sydney was married to her work and for that reason, she ended up unintentionally pushing people she loved away. "To prove to you that I'm not some workaholic that priorities my work over the people I love." Despite the fact Sydney put her work above most things, she never prioritised it over people she loved. Never her family and certainly never a boyfriend.

Rudy had frowned yet again. "I don't see you like that."

"That's bullshit." And she knew that because it was the exact reason they had that fight in the first place. "It's the reason we broke up and it's the same reason you snapped at me."

"That's not true." Rudy was not only lying to Sydney but he was lying to himself. He wanted to believe the reason was something more than that but ultimately, it wasn't. Sydney worked too much, that was all there was to it.

"It's not? Why did you walk out then? Why did you leave? If it's not that, then tell me why." If Sydney was wrong, she would love to know. If there was another reason, she deserved to know. But she knew there wasn't.

But Rudy still believed that he had walked out that day just because Sydney told him to, and no other reason. "You were the one that said we shouldn't be dating. And then you asked me to leave." He was still blaming her when he needed to realise that they were both at fault. Both of them needed to take responsibility for what had happened instead of blaming it on the other.

"Because you told me that it didn't even feel like we were dating anymore, after you started an argument with me over my job. Over something I couldn't control." Sydney told him, her face red with anger. "It wasn't my fault that I was so busy. But you made me feel like it was." Rudy had made Sydney feel guilty for working, for getting these big roles that were going to be good for her and so that she could make something of herself. Partners were not supposed to make the other feel guilty for doing that.

And Rudy certainly hadn't meant to make Sydney feel guilty, at least not till they had that last argument. "I didn't mean to. I was just angry. I hardly saw you that whole month."

"But you acted like you were the only one upset about it, I was upset about it too. I'd missed you like crazy and then you made me feel bad about it." Sydney told him, seeing his face fall at her words. He needed to know that she'd felt just as upset about how busy she was in those last few months as he did.

"I didn't mean to. I was just angry."

"So what were you angry about this time?" Sydney asked, because if he was 'just angry' then she wanted to know what possibly could've made him angry this time, for him to publicly humiliate her.

Rudy averted his eyes away from the girl before he answered. "I-I don't know."

Sydney scoffed. "You don't know?" She didn't believe him.

"No."

Sydney cleared her throat before she stood up from the armchair. "Well, if you don't know then this conversation is over and you should probably leave. We're not going to resolve this if you don't tell me what I did to make you so angry." Sydney said as she crossed her arms over her chest while she stood in front of Rudy.

"Sydney—"

"I'm serious. Rudy, please just go." Sydney said in a much more harsh tone which made Rudy realise that their conversation was over. He couldn't tell Sydney why he snapped at her the way he did so they weren't going to resolve what happened, at least not then. Rudy left as soon as the words left Sydney's mouth, leaving her alone and frustrated.

Let's just say, it was definitely the most awkward night out for both of them and unfortunately, everyone else could sense it.
