"Ohh really?", Louis said with a smile as he opened the door of his house with one hand and held the phone to his ear by the other. He had just reached his home and was parking his car in his garage when there was a call on his mobile phone.
"Yes, dada. Auntie Daisy taught me everything." Ethan said happily while telling his father how he had helped his Aunt Daisy in baking cupcakes today. Even though, all he had done was move a spoon in the cupcake batter once and had closed the oven after Daisy put the cupcakes inside them, it was still a lot of work for him and he felt proud for being a big boy and learning how to bake. He had sat on the kitchen slab all through the time and had watched his aunt work very intently so now he was really happy to think that he knew how to bake cupcakes.
Louis smiled with his teeth on display as he put the keys in the bowl and closed the door behind him. "That's great bub. Now, where's my share?"
Louis heard a small gasp on the phone and kept himself from cooing at his boy as he heard Ethan's distant talk to Lottie, away from the speaker, "Auntie, auntie. We made a mistake. We forgot to save the cupcakes for dada. He will be sad."
Louis bit his lip to hide his laughter and said, "Helloooo? Ethyyyy?" , as though he didn't hear Ethan's voice. He may be a twenty-four year old, father of a boy for the world but whenever he was with his son, he felt like a mischievous kid himself. With his child he became a child too and he loved every bit of it. Moreover, he was on cloud nine today. He was the happiest he'd been in a very long time which made his cheerful side show.
"y-yeah. I'm sorry, dada but there are no cupcakes left. All of us finished it." Ethan said in a guilty voice and Louis so wanted to 'aw' at his cuteness. But he didn't. Let's just say that Ethan's dada was more naughty than he himself. He loved teasing his boy.
Louis faked a gasp and said, "You...you forgot your dada? That's so mean, Ethy. First, you leave your dada all alone in London and then you forget to save cupcakes for him. I'm so hurt." Louis said and pretended to sniff a few sobs.
"No no no dada. Please don't cry. I'll make you some cupcakes when I get back, okay? I promise. Aunty Daisy has taught me very well and I'll bake tasty tasty ones for you. Please don't be sad, dada. I'm sorry." Ethan said in a concerned and sad voice.
"No, you don't love me anymore." Louis teased the boy who was almost close to crying now, thinking that he had upset his dada too much and he would probably never talk to him after this, "No dada. Don't say that. I love you. I love you a lot. I'm sorry for not saving cupcakes for you but really, I will bake some for you when I come back. Pinky promise and it will all be yours. I won't take any cupcakes from those. Don't be sad, pleeeeeeeeeeeease." He said as tears started to come up in his eyes. He never felt good whenever his dada was sad.
And now Louis couldn't hold himself back from cooing loudly at his caring, adorable and about to cry son. "Awww my baby. Don't cry, love. Dada was just teasing you. I'm not sad or mad at you."
Ethan was surprised, "You are not?"
"Nope." Louis said with a giggle.
"Meanie. I was scared that you were angry at me dada. Very bad. " The little boy said through the phone with a whine. He got even more annoyed when he heard Louis' laughter. "I will not talk to you."
Louis stifled his laugh and said, "Okay okay, sorry bubba. I was playing with you. Forgive your dada, please?"
"Hmmmmmmmmmm." Ethan thought for a while before saying. "Okay,"
"Ahh thank you, little one."
Ethan giggled at his dada's relieved voice and said, "Your welcome dada."
Louis smiled with a certain of pride as he noticed that Ethan had remembered what he had taught him as the reponse of 'thank you'. "Now, Go have your dinner with your aunties, okay?"
"Okay."
"Eat every thing auntie gives you in your plate. And no staying awake for late, alright?"
"Yup, dada."
"My good baby." Louis said. He couldn't get enough of how sweet and lovely his son was. "Take care, darling. Dada loves you."
"I love you too dada. Bye Bye."
"Bye, love." Louis said after which the line went dead. He went to the kitchen while humming a happy tune and drank a glass of water before walking up the stairs to his bedroom. The smile never leaving his face and the jolly hum not ceasing either. Today was certainly the best day he'd had in a really long time. For the first time in years, he was smiling because of a reason other than Ethan. In the last six years, he had forgotten what contentment felt like except for moments that he used to spend with his son.
But today his glee had reached heights after what seemed like forever. When he had woken up in the morning that day, he had not fathomed that it would turn out to be this amazing.
He entered his room and put his phone on charge before going into the bathroom for his daily 'after work' shower. He looked at the mirror in the bathroom to find his reflection smiling back at him. The smile hadn't seem to come off his face for even once after what had happened in the office. Louis was absolutely giddy.
He let out a sigh as he looked at himself and bit his lips to stop the blush from crawling up on his lips as he remembered the events of today. He didn't know why but he couldn't even look at himself in the mirror without giggling or turning a darker shade of pink. He hid his face in his hand and giggled like a schoolgirl. Louis felt like a teenager with a crush all over again while squealing inside the confinement of the walls of the bathroom. But he didn't care. There was no one to look at him so he let all his happiness come out. In that moment, he felt like he was himself. The same carefree, happy and childish Louis that he once used to be before situations went downhill.
He looked at himself once more with a smile before turning towards the shower. He undressed and threw away his clothes in the laundry tub at the corner before sliding in the glass chamber and standing under the shower. His eyes closed shut and a relaxed sigh escaped his lips as the water hit his skin. The warmth of the water had a different effect on him today. He was feeling much calm and relieved than he had ever felt under the sprays of the shower and he exactly knew why.
Today, the green eyed boy had taken a huge step towards forgiving Louis. A step that the Louis had never expected. For all these years, the blue eyed boy had always pushed himself down for thinking himself to be the reason behind everyone's suffering. He considered himself the worst person for ruining the lives of the people he cared the most about. He had often thought that he didn't deserve to have such amazing and supportive friends and a loving and caring boyfriend which he himself had pushed away ruthlessly. He had always found himself under the guilt of not only playing with the emotions of his closed ones but also snatching away their happiness numerous times.
He had not just broken Harry's heart to pieces but had also taken Zayn and Liam's support for granted. Although those two never complained and Louis never expressed but deep within, the blue eyed boy hated himself for becoming a burden to them.
But today's day was in a new light. The day had brought with itself some of the best news Louis had heard in a while. First of them being Liam's decision to propose Zayn. He was elated to know that finally Liam and Zayn would be taking a step ahead. Louis had chosen to assume that he was somewhere holding the couple back from living their own lives and having their personal space. But now, Liam's decision of asking for Zayn's hand in marriage made Louis feel less guilty. He couldn't be any happier when Liam asked him to help him plan everything out. The blue eyed boy considered this to be his chance of returning all the favours that his friends had done for him by making this the most beautiful and priceless memory of both their lives.
And if it wasn't the best news ever for Louis, then the massive improvement in his situation with Harry most definitely was. Never in his wildest dreams had Louis ever thought that Harry would want to start fresh. Louis was certain that his love for those green eyes, those dimples and that sublime soul would never fade but he had slowly started giving up on the idea of having those to himself, especially after Harry's cold stoned behaviour when he had met him the first time after six years.
But today, a lot changed.
While standing under the shower and letting the warm water kiss his figure, Louis felt like the entire day was a fantasy. That he was just dreaming and would wake up any moment to realise that all of what happened today was not the reality. He wrapped his arms around himself and held his small frame tightly, as though he was clutching onto the feeling of bliss that he had experienced when Harry decided to give another chance to him.
As it is, the green eyed boy asking him to be his date at the award show was already too surreal to accept for Louis but what happened after that was something more like a dream, too blissful to believe.
<<FLASHBACK:
'What the holy hell just happened!!!!'
This was all Louis could think about on his way back to his cabin. Totally shook with disbelief, was what he was at the moment. Him and Liam had just left the studio after spending those eventful thirty minutes inside and were on their way to Louis' cabin when Liam had received a text from Zayn which said that he was done with the meeting with his client and asked if Liam could pick him up. The brown eyed boy had to leave right after. He was hoping to sit down with Louis in his cabin to commence his proposal plan but after Louis assured him that he'd let him know some of the ideas by tomorrow, Liam heaved a sigh and went to pick Zayn up. 'Might as well take him to a random, casual date.' Liam had thought.
And with that, Louis was left all alone in the emptiness of his cabin. For some reason, he was glad because all the things that happened in the recording studio was too much for him and he hadn't gotten a chance to take a moment to have a seizure about it. It was very difficult for him to hold his squealing and heavy breaths and a constant urge to pinch himself to see whether he was dreaming or not, in front of his friends and especially in front of Harry but he somehow managed to do it. And now that he was alone, he could finally unleash his inner fired up teenager slash fanboy.
So, one moment he was in a daze with wide eyes and mouth dropped open and in the next, he was shrieking in disbelief.
"Eeeeeeeee!!! Oh my God, Oh my God, OH MY....GOD!!" He screamed with joy. It's not like he couldn't be heard outside of the room, it was just that he didn't care. The past thirty minutes of his life was something he had never believed could ever happen to him. Harry asked him to be his plus one at the award show....as his date.
HIS DATE!!
HIS FUCKING DATE!!!
And boy, Louis had never thought that after years of tension and hatred and hurt, he would see a day when Harry would ask him out once again. Harry Styles was supposed to hate him after all the pain that he had caused him six years ago. He was supposed to take every chance of staying away from him but here he was...asking the blue eyed boy out on a date.
So, no matter what he tried, Louis couldn't sink in the fact that what he was thinking had happened in the studio had actually happened and wasn't just his imagination. His blue eyes were still wide as he pranced around the room with all the jitters. It was as though his heart was running at about hundred miles an hour and the butterflies in his stomach were too thrilled.
Louis took in long deep breaths to calm himself but the thumping of his heart and his lip muscles lifted upwards didn't seem to subside. He was so over the moon because of the step Harry had taken but at the same time, the rational part inside of him had too many unanswered questions, one of which was 'why'.
Why did Harry chose him when he could have literally had anyone in this world to go with him? The green eyed boy was well aware that all he needed to do was say and the management could've arranged for the prefect person as his date. But he still chose Louis making it all the more difficult for the blue eyed boy to believe if this was real or just a mirage of his fantasies.
He leaned against the office table with his back facing the door as he repeatedly chanted to himself, "Please, don't be a dream. Please don't be a dream. Please, don't be a dr-"
"It's not a dream."
'Oh Shit.'
Louis sucked in a deep breath, the moment he heard that voice, knowing really well who it belonged to. His back was towards the door but he could recognise that voice even among a million other voices.
And just like that he was frozen. A sudden wave of embarrassment hit him and he couldn't dare turn around to face the tall, green eyed boy, who he was sure, must be taking him as a pathetic despo.
'I mean who hyperventilates like a maniac on such a thing, right. You're an idiot, Louis.'
But the damage was already done. No matter how embarrassing that might be, Harry had actually seen him acting like a teenage girl and at some point he would have to turn around and face the boy. So, he took a deep breath and whirled around slowly, trying his best to hide his flushed expression. He gradually lifted his eyes and looked shyly at Harry from under his thick eyelashes only to find Harry coyly smiling back at him.
The green eyed boy didn't know what had come over him when he'd seen Louis walk out of the studio just a few moments ago. Almost instantly he had felt like there was still a lot to be said and understood and that this was his chance. His chance to not only make things better with Louis but even take a step ahead. A step of friendship.
So, not even five minutes after Liam and Louis left the studio, Harry had told Niall that he'll be right back and scurried his way to Louis' cabin.
And before he knew what he had to say, he was standing right in front of Louis' office. For the next few seconds, Harry contemplated his decision of coming here to talk to Louis. What if everything turned awkward? As it is, he was already asking Louis to be his friend after practically asking him out on a date. He felt like he was going in the reverse direction but then again he didn't care. 'Give your heart this second chance.' His conscience kept telling him.
So, complying to his heart's desires, he proceeded to knock on the door only to find it slightly open and a faint shadow of someone walking around swiftly. He leaned a bit forward to see who it was and almost instantly a smile crept on his lips when he saw Louis prancing around the office with a blush on his face and biting his nails with his teeth nervously. Harry just couldn't stop himself from admiring the blue eyed boy's cuteness. He felt like he was finally seeing the Louis he fell in love with. The one who squealed when he was excited, bit his lips when he was nervous and blushed whenever Harry said something. So, standing outside that office, Harry could see the glimpse of his young and gorgeous shorty in this twenty four old boy and that only made him realise that Louis was still the same. No matter how serious and strong he might have tried to portray himself as, Louis was still the soft and delicate boy who had a forever-lasting amount of love for Harry in his heart.
And as for Harry, he felt like his love for Louis increased by a notch every single day.
The singer couldn't avert his eyes to anywhere other than the beautiful small figure of the boy who was now leaning against his desk and chanting, 'Please don't be a dream, Please don't be a dream.' And almost instantly, Harry found himself speaking, "It's not a dream." He had figured that Louis was probably finding it hard to believe that he had asked him to be his date and so he wanted him to know that this was real; wanted him to understand that he had meant it very sincerely when he had asked Louis to be his plus one at the award show.
It was only after he said the words, did he realise that he had made his presence known to Louis. He wasn't intending to though. Harry was hoping to stand there for a little longer and kind of like admire what Louis was like.
On the other hand, Louis was breathing deep breaths a few times to let the heat off of his face that had crept up to his cheeks as soon as he had figured that Harry had caught him having a mini freak out in the office. At that moment, crawling under the desk and hiding from Harry were appearing very tempting for him but obviously he had no option other than turning and facing the green eyed boy who was possibly taking him as a complete idiot and mentally laughing at him for acting like this.
Hoping that Harry doesn't notice his blushing cheeks and embarrassed expression, Louis finally convinced himself to turn around. He bit his lips nervously and slowly looked up to meet Harry's eyes. "uhhh...I-I was j-just...I umm... is-is there anything you needed?" He stuttered while trying to somehow make it as less awkward for himself as possible.
Harry continued looking at the small boy standing in front of him with flushed cheeks and fiddling fingers. A small smile was plastered on his lips as he felt like standing there and staring at Louis for the rest of his life. But he couldn't get a chance to do so as Louis called out out his name again.
"uhh Harry?" The blue eyed boy said when he didn't get any reply from Harry the first time.
"huh? OH yeah..um I just came here to talk about something." He said as he straightened his posture and averted his passionate looks from Louis, not wanting to come out as an obsessed admirer of the boy. Even though he knew he was, he couldn't let it show just yet.
"Oh okay...sure. Come on in." Louis said and gestured Harry to come inside. "Please have a seat. Would you like to have something? Tea or coffee?""
"No, I'm fine." Harry said as he walked inside the office and shut the door behind him.
Thinking that he had come to discuss something professional, Louis continued to speak as he started walking towards his own seat. "I also had to discuss about a few of the things about your song release and then the tou-"
The rest of the sentence didn't leave his mouth as he felt the taller boy grab his wrist from behind. His heartbeat skyrocketed like every other time Harry touched him.
"I-I came to talk about us, Louis."
The small boy slowly turned around, the feeling of Harry's touch making his insides aflame.
"Oh..oh" He breathed out with nervousness lacing his voice. He didn't know what to expect out of this conversation. He feared that both of them would end up fighting again just like they had the last few times when their past was brought up but at the same time a huge part of him was hopeful. Hopeful that Harry would not be that hateful to him all over again.
But regardless of whatever was to come, Louis sighed and prepared himself to take in whatever Harry had to say. They may not have brought this up in a past few days, but Louis knew he couldn't escape this. He knew that at some point that they would have to talk about themselves.
"W-what about us?" He asked cautiously.
"Yeah. umm actually. We..I..uh" Harry stuttered while trying to find the perfect words to say. The cabin was so quiet that Harry was sure that Louis could hear his restless heart beating loudly. But then he looked up from where his gaze was focused on the floor and met with those beautiful eyes that he had fallen in love with all those years ago and still loved with same passion and devotion. And just like every other time in the past, the blue in those eyes managed to tame his wild heartbeats and remove all the uncertainties in his mind. He sighed as he let Louis' undivided stare calm his nerves which only indirectly reassured his confidence in his decision.
One look in those eyes and Harry knew he was making the right choice and so he spoke up once again. This time with much more conviction.
"Louis, we've been through a lot in the past six years. Look, I don't know what happened and why it happened but I've spent six whole years pondering over it. I won't ask you to explain yourself anymore and... and I have already accepted the fact that no matter how much I try to hate you, I will never stop lo- umm it's just not going to happen. I just want to be happy again, Louis and it won't be possible if I forever hold a grudge in my heart against you. I am sorry for my rude behavior. I was just trying to cope with the fact that I'll -I'll have to see you in front of me and not be able to call you mine or hold you. All these years all I did was figure out what caused you do what you did six years ago but never came to a conclusion. Because of which I have spent equal amount of time blaming you for breaking my heart and blaming myself for not being able to be enough for you."
"No no no Harry. You were always e-" Louis spoke immediately when he realised that Harry had been blaming himself for everything that had happened and he couldn't take it. He couldn't believe that Harry could've thought that about himself? ' Does he really believe that he wasn't enough? How could he not be!!
"You don't have to tell me anything anymore. As I said, I don't need you to explain. I just wanna move on. I have been hurt a lot in these years Louis and I've had enough. I am sick of this game of hiding behind something that I'm not. Although it is impossible for me to forget everything that happened I don't want to spend any further second of my life questioning you or myself. So, today, I am just uhhh...just hoping that maybe we..we should start fresh?"
The blue eyed boy couldn't look away from those intense green orbs that were staring at him with a sort of an unexplainable glow. His heart had instantly started thumping in his chest as soon as he heard Harry's words. 'Start fresh?' His entire self had started shaking in disbelief as he realised that probably Harry was hinting on giving their relationship another chance.
But the sudden rise in his nervousness was not because of happiness.
Louis knew that without Harry his life was incomplete. He knew that never in his remaining life would he ever fall for someone else. Humans had just one heart and Louis had already given that to the man standing in front of him years ago. He knew that no one other than Harry could ever fill the void in his life. He knew that he could never be whole unless he had Harry with him and right in front of him was a chance of having him as his again. But Louis also knew that he couldn't be this selfish. No matter what Harry might say, he couldn't get back with the boy even though there was nothing else he wanted to do more than this. There were still things and people that Harry didn't even have the slightest knowledge about and Louis knew that it was best if Harry stayed away from all those stuff for the sake of his happiness and career. Even if Harry might forgive him, Louis knew he'd still be carrying secrets from the boy and that would just not be fair. He'd rather be the one Harry hated because he didn't want to win his trust only to hurt him again which was kind of inevitable if he ever decided to tell him everything there was to tell.
Moreover while Louis' heart kept screaming at him to just get back with Harry because that's all he needed, his mind kept telling him that he didn't deserve the boy anymore. Harry was the desire of every man and woman out there and there were far better people than him that would keep his much more happier than he ever could. The green eyed boy deserved a rich, beautiful, competent, classy and a gem-hearted person as his life partner and Louis never considered himself having any of those qualities. He kept thinking that keeping the boy all to himself would just be selfish. Harry wasn't just Harry anymore. He was the Harry Styles now, on which the whole world laid their eyes on and waited to know every single bit about his life. He was an idol to millions and a dream for another set of millions. There were so many who wished for the honor of being called Harry's and those who didn't wished to see the best person ever to be with the boy. The media, the fans...everyone was always eager to know who Harry was dating and if they were good enough for him or not. All these thoughts only made Louis think of himself as a completely degrading choice for Harry. He had convinced himself that he'd only embarrass the boy if he ever was to be seen with him.
And what if-
His train of finding all possible reasons to not be with Harry came to a halt when a warm and soft hand touched his. He blinked into the present time to see Harry holding his hands right in front of his chest.
"Look Louis, I don't know what you're thinking but let me make myself clear. I will never be able to forget the past..our past okay. I still haven't forgiven you completley and....and I don't think I ever will. But..but I am slowly getting over it. I don't want to hate you Louis. I..I just can't anymore and that's why I want us to start off again as friends. I want you to be comfortable with me and I want to be comfortable around you because no matter what, we are going to be working together for a while now and having this tension between us everytime we are in the same room will...will not end well. I know it and that's why I'm sorry for all the times that I was rude to you and I assure you that it won't happen again."
Harry took a deep breath before looking into Louis' eyes again and said, " So Louis...will you be my friend?..Again?
Oh,okay. So Harry wanted them to be just friends. Louis didn't know what to feel about that now. Moments ago he was thinking of a million reasons as to why being with Harry wasn't the right choice and now that he realised that Harry wasn't suggesting to get back together at all but he was talking about starting fresh as friends, Louis couldn't deny that somewhere deep inside he was kinda hoping that Harry was talking about their relationship as more than just friends. He couldn't decide what he wanted to be honest and all this was driving him crazy. At one point he was ready to push Harry away for the boy's sake and the very next moment he wanted to keep the handsome boy close to himself for his own sake. He was sure he was going insane.
The mesmerizing jade eyes that were looking into his blue ones held hope. Hope for an affirmative answer and who was he to reject them. He didn't see any harm in being friends. 'It would just be like two people who work together and get along very well. That's all.' Louis thought. He would get to have the happy Harry back and wouldn't have to feel the pain of being hurt everytime Harry shouted at him. Louis was still not sure about himself though. He believed that he might still end up hurting the boy but his selfish side just didn't want to let go of this chance of actually making things better with Harry.
And this time, before his stupid brain could come up with another potential possibility of what might happen if he became friends with Harry, Louis closed his eyes and said "Yes!"
This time he was going to be selfish. This time he was going to do what his heart wanted.
On the other hand, the green eyed boy was gradually giving up on the idea when Louis didn't answer for a long time and just when he was about to say "nevermind" and get out of the cabin, Louis said yes. "Y-yes?" He asked to confirm that ye didn't hear wrong. A part of him had been frightened the whole time thinking that Louis might downright reject this offer. That he might say that they can't be friends. That they can't be anything. That there was a reason behind him leaving all those six years ago. They weren't supposed to mean nothing more than professional acquaintances.
But he was wrong.
"Yes." Louis nodded slowly and continued, " I... I am really sorry Harry. I know I have hurt you beyond compare. Probably more than anyone has ever hurt you and you really shouldn't be the one saying sorry to me for anything. I deserved that type of treatment for all justified reasons. But if you're ready to take me as your friend again then who am I to deny. I would..I would love it if if we became friends again."
Harry couldn't contain his smile when he heard the last sentence. Memories of when they were the best of friends came rushing back to him. Those moments were the best experience of his life. The green eyed boy has preserved those memories deep within his heart after everything had gone downhill six years ago and he couldn't believe he'd get to have that relationship with his shorty again. This new friendship undoubtedly had strains and not everything was going to be smooth. Harry was well aware of that but it didn't matter to him as long as he got to have Louis by his side again. He was going to give this an another chance and had decided to go really slowly and carefully. So being friends was a really progressive step in their relationship and Harry couldn't be any happier about it.
" So... Friends?" He asked with an extended hand in a handshake, waiting for Louis to put his hand in his and seal the deal.
The blue eyed looked at the beautiful face of the man he had always loved and said with a shy smile. "Friends."
Although he wasn't expecting the taller boy to suddenly pull him flushed against his chest and hug him tight.
Louis was in Harry's embrace just like he used to be years ago. His small petite figure fit perfectly in those warm comfy and soft arms as slowly wrapped his own small ones around the green eyed boy's broad figure. Words couldn't describe how much he had missed the feeling of hearing the soothing rhythm of Harry's heartbeat while he was engulfed in those buff muscles.
And if his heart was on cloud nine till now,it definitely soared higher above when Harry spoke near his ear in his deep but soft voice, " I..I missed you... shorty."
With tears in his eyes and overflowing love in his heart for the boy, Louis couldn't think of any way to answer that other than tightening his arms around Harry and saying
"I missed you too..froggy. Missed you so much."
