Chapter 11

ARTHUR

The evening went exactly as planned. Everyone was absolutely delighted. As a founder, people also came up to me to congratulate me on a successful project. However, everyone was looking forward to the speech of the hero of the occasion, the organizer – Kornelia. I quickly looked around the room, but I couldn't find her.

But I knew her too well, so I went to the roof first. Going out there, a familiar silhouette could be seen a little further away. Her light silk dress fluttered in the wind. She leaned on the fence around the perimeter of the roof and looked thoughtfully into the distance.

"Everyone is waiting for you, what are you doing here?" - I called out to her, coming closer.

Kornelia continued to stare at the view of the night city in front of her, not paying any attention to me. I got close enough to hear her and she replied, "Hiding from the maddened crowd. Reporters and photographers are too much for me."

"But you deserve it," - I said, and Kornelia again remained silent. I looked at her again. Her face was thoughtful and completely calm. She was lost in her own thoughts. Her body was covered with goosebumps from the cold autumn wind, so I took off my jacket and threw it over her shoulders.

"I guess I won't bother you," - I said after a while and already turned around in the direction of the exits, as Kornelia said.

"I've been thinking a lot about our last conversation," - she said thoughtfully, and then turned to me. "And you know, I understand you. I understand why you did that," - she said calmly, and then took a few steps towards me. "And I also believe you. I believed every word you said."

Kornelia took a deep breath, clearly gathering her thoughts together. "But I'm afraid, nothing can be fixed," - she whispered, and without waiting for my answer, she walked with quick steps towards the exit.

"Do you love him?" - I shouted after her, she stopped abruptly and froze in such a state.

"It doesn't matter," - she replied, still standing with her back to me, as if she was trying to hide her emotions.

My heart was beating faster, and I couldn't leave everything unanswered. After taking a few decisive steps in her direction, I added, "When did you become so cynical?"- I said, but again there was no answer.

I came up behind her and gently hugged her, wanting to feel her warmth and closeness again. Then, making a gentle movement, I turned her around to me. Tears glistened in her eyes, reflecting the mixed feelings she had hidden deep inside.

"I know your feelings haven't gone away," - I whispered in her ear. My words were filled with tenderness and sincerity, which I never stopped feeling towards her. Kornelia looked up at me and with incredible longing and sadness in her voice said, "But the time gone."

She turned her head down and gently took my hand in hers, as if she wanted to keep this moment between them. "This is our last time," - she whispered, the words piercing my heart like sharp needles. "This is the last time I hold your hand."

Then she let go of me and her arms wrapped around my waist. She snuggled up to me, and I felt her tense body relax slightly. "This is the last time I hug you." The words sounded so quiet and sincere that it seemed as if they were disappearing into thin air.

We stood there for a while. I was motionless, afraid to move to capture every detail of this moment. I knew she was serious, and it was time to say goodbye.

Kornelia pulled away from me slightly, but her arms continued to hug my body, as if she didn't want to let go. She looked at me one last time, and then, with a soft and gentle movement, kissed me on the cheek. "This is the last time I kiss you."

And then she just walked away.
