Chapter Three

"Jiang... Cheng?!"
Panics rose in Wei Wuxian as he saw the other's shocked face.
"Y-you were about to leave!" Jiang Cheng says loudly. Wei Ying quickly covers his mouth "shh quiet down..." He pulls the Jiang inside and quickly closes the window.

"What are you doing here?"

"Nah-uh I'm the one who is going question YOU! Where are you going!" Cheng furrows his brows in anger. "I thought you weren't going to leave..." Wei Wuxian sighs as he finishes tying his hair.
"You've got it all wrong Cheng." He assures the other male. "I'm not leaving... but I feel a huge amount of resentment coming from across the lake."

Hearing this the Jiang heir calms down a little. "You still have resentment inside of you. How come I or anybody else feel it?"

"I've been suppressing it so no one would know..." Wuxian sighs again sitting down in the bed.
"So you have resentment inside you with the golden core?" Wei Wuxian nods. "Yeah, it looks like the resentment energy within me didn't disappear despite travelling back in time."
There's silence between them until Jiang Cheng decides to speak.

"So about the resentment you said..."

"I was about to go and cleanse it but you came so do want to come with me." For Jiang Cheng, that question didn't even need to be asked. He already planned to go knowing if he didn't Wei Wuxian will get into trouble.

"Let's go then. Come with me I need to grab Sandu."

After getting the sword they quickly travel towards the resentment.

Unknown that they were being followed.

A whole hour passed as the brothers ran past countless trees. If not for Wei Wuxian who sensed the resentment getting stronger, it would have felt as if they would never reach their destination.

"Anything?" Jiang Cheng questioned.

"Up ahe- wait" Wei Ying stopped abruptly. In front of them, dozens of waking corpses gathered around a light that was illuminating the forest. Seeing this Jiang Cheng signalled to climb the tree near them.

"The resentment Cheng..." He looked at the latter in purple. "It's really familiar... it's almost like Chengqing's." Jiang Cheng thought for a moment "I haven't seen Chengqing on him... could it really be the ghost flute..."

Not far from them, a pair of eyes watched the boys.
"What... are they up to?"

With Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian

"Let's go..." Wuxian jumped down within the corpse attracting attention towards himself. However, during that fall Wei Ying manages to get a glimpse of the object that was held mid-air.

"Jiang Cheng it's Chengqing!" He cried happily. Jiang Cheng on the other hand was shaken greatly as a corpse near Wuxian flew in to attack him.

With no time left to counter the attack, Wei Wuxian tried to defend himself. Fortunately for the two brothers, a small dagger flew past the latter surprising him.

"Idiot!" Jiang Cheng says when he reaches Ying. "How could you move without thinking?" Wei Ying however was more focused on the dagger that had implanted itself in the corpse. "This has the lotus flower on it-" "Maybe think of that later first we have this to deal with!" Jiang Cheng interrupts him and draws out his sword.

Seeing how the corpses were now looking in their direction both Cheng and Ying got ready to fight. "Cover me I'm going to try and get them in my control," Wei Wuxian says as he curves his lips and whistles a tune. Many of the corpses which had started to move in their direction stopped. Taking the opportunity Wei Ying quickly made his way towards Chengqing.

Eerie music filled the night sky.

Corpses all stilled to listen to the divine music. With his eyes turned crimson red the Yiling Laozu gave one look and all corpses disappeared in different directions obeying his command.

"Now..." Using resentment Wei Ying bought the dagger towards him and inspected it. "Someone is following us." Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes "Yeah no shit... I've never seen this dagger before." They both inspected the dagger for a second "I have to say the lotus on it is nicely carved" Wuxian says. "Let's go back, for now, we can -" "You do realise that the person following us would have seen you use resentment right" If word spread again about Wei Wuxian using resentment energy he can easily become the public enemy again.

Wuxian sighs and looks into the distance. "I know..."

《Time Skip》
"Umm sorry to say young master but this inn is already booked with all the rooms," the innkeeper says politely. While the other disciples looked disappointed, the Yummeng brothers weren't surprised.
"Let's go then if we keep walking we should be able to reach Cloud Recess soon" Jiang Cheng walks towards the entrance. For Jiang Cheng the sooner they left the better.

Two reasons why...

First: He didn't want to face the peacock so soon.
Second: He didn't want both Wuxian and Yanli to cross paths with the Jin heir either.

The trip was quicker than Wei Ying thought it would be. As they arrived towards the gate Wei Wuxian kept walking.
"Stop please show us your invitation first," one of the Lan disciples said.

"Invitation?" Ying looked dumbly at the Lan in front of him. "Here it is." Jiang Cheng takes a piece of paper out and gives it to the disciple. Once in He pulls Wei Ying closer and whispers in an angry tone "Focus you, idiot, this isn't the Cloud Recess you know anymore!" Wei Ying lets out a small laugh before suddenly remembering something.

//Wei Ying Pov//
I glance back at the entrance. I want to wait knowing he will come soon. I want to see his face again. It really feels like centuries since I saw him. My Lan Zhan. My Huangun-jun. My Lan-er-gege. My- no he's not mine anymore... he's the second young master of the Lan Clan. I close my eyes and think of all the moments I've had with him.  "Greetings second young master Lan" my eyes snap open hearing the disciple and the moment we come face to face our eyes lock together as we stare at each other. The world seems to have stopped and the only thing existing is us.

"Lan Zhan..." the words barely come out as a whisper. Tears slowly flood my eyes but I don't run towards him like I usually would. No, I run but in the opposite direction. Shijie calls out my name making me run even faster. I don't want to explain anything to anyone right now.

Many of the Lan members say no running but I ignore them. I ignore almost everything and my feet carry me to the back hills where Lan Zhan and I would always spend our time together feeding our bunnies. When I get there there are no bunnies only grass with small flowers here and there.

With Jiang Cheng
A-Jie had already gone to look for A-Ying. I wanted to question Lan Wangji but he leaves as quickly as he came. His face didn't show any emotion but for some reason, I knew he was conflicted inside.

After taking our belongings and the disciples to where we would be resting, I walked around and find Jie in distress. "A-Cheng I-I can't find him!" she runs towards me. "Tell me the truth A-Cheng I know you know why A-Xian is acting the way he is." I look at her for a second deciding what to say. However, Jie pulls me aside so we are out of everyone's sight. "I know you both are hiding something from me and A-Die and A-Naing" she pauses before speaking again. "Please I want to help... I'm worried."

With Wei Ying

The night sky is filled with stars shining. The silent wind. And the bitter cold that hits me while I stay in the spot I have sat in ever since running away from everyone. "I can't do this..." I whisper to myself. I sit there a little more before deciding to head down the mountain to get some Emperor Smile.

The barrier that protected Cloud Recess was once again weakened. After moving in, Lan Zhan, Huan-ge and I strengthened the barrier. I once again climb the wall and sat on the roof. Smiling I remembered how Lan Zhan had caught me and punished me for bringing Emperor Smile to Cloud Recess. I turn my head expecting the man who conquered my heart with his unconditional love. However, who I saw there was no man but an empty space. My heart dropped seeing this change.

My eyes scan around for Lan Zhan but don't see him anywhere. "Why isn't he here?" I murmur. "He-" "Wei Wuxian!" Someone whispers loudly. Looking down I see Jiang Cheng in his white robe that we are supposed to wear while studying here at Cloud Recess. "Jiang Cheng what are you doing here." I climb down and we quickly head towards our room.

"What happened Jiang Cheng?" I question. "Your Lan-er-gege is in the Library." Jiang Cheng says knowing exactly who his brother was looking for. "But don't even try going there. We don't even know if he also travelled back in time with us so don't do anything out of character."

Jiang Cheng's POV

I lied. Lan Wangji wasn't in the Library. In fact, I hadn't seen him since I last saw him. But just to A-Ying stay and not go out and look for him I had to lie. "Look sleep and rest first we can't be late for our first lecture" I roll my eyes saying the last part. I would do anything but go through classes again. "Let's bunk the lectures I know you don't want to go" Wuxian nudges me in my arm. "Go to sleep," I say again even though what he is saying is true. "And don't you dare-" I see him already in bed asleep. When did he get there I have no clue. I turn off the lights and headed to bed since I had to attend lectures.

Again!
