Part 5

Monday, October 26th, 1925, 8.45am

Scott and Suzy arrive head towards Hill Valley High School in the morning. Scott fiddles with his iPhone.

SCOTT
It's still scrambled. The future still hasn't been decided.

SUZY
You shouldn't keep looking at that; the battery will go flat.

Scott switches his phone off and puts it into his backpack. The pair arrive at the school.
They find it is just being built. There are construction workers busily building the school.

SCOTT
Another dead end. The school isn’t even built yet. How are we gonna find out what happened to Clara?

SUZY
There must be an older school in the town. Any ideas?

Scott looks around, spies a nearby worker and calls out to him.

SCOTT
Hey buddy, can you help me please?

WORKER
Yeah, what’s up kid?

SCOTT
I’m looking for the local school. Do you know where it is?

The worker points down the road.

WORKER
Follow that road down there which leads towards Shonash Ravine. You’ll find it down there about half a mile before you reach it.

SUZY
Shonash Ravine? Where’s that?

WORKER
Sorry, my mistake. It's now called Eastwood Ravine. They renamed it after someone who died when a train crashed into the ravine around forty years ago. The old folk of the town still call it by the old Indian name.

SCOTT
Yeah, I know where that is, thanks very much.

The pair reach Hill Valley old school. Scott has been inside enquiring about Clara and is now leaving the building. A teacher watches him leave the site. He is the father of Gerald Strickland, the future principal.

SCOTT
That guy is the double of the guy from the 7/11 in 1985. It must be his dad or something. You know that guy who they made a statue of at school?

SUZY
Oh yeah, I see what you mean. Any luck with finding Clara?

SCOTT
Not really. I eventually persuaded him to look through the files. He made a right fuss over it. I found out that Clara left the school in the late 1880s to have a baby. She didn’t go back after that. None of the teachers there today, were working here back then.

SUZY
We’re gonna have to get the DeLorean fixed ourselves somehow. Our main priorities are getting back to 1985 and then stop the accident so you get born.

SCOTT
And then what? If we don’t have the accident, we wouldn’t be stopping it, so we would have the accident again.

SUZY
Wouldn’t we have gone back to the future and never have got here in 1925?

SCOTT
Ourselves of two days ago would have gone to 2015, but where would that have left us in 1925? Would we just fade from existence?

SUZY
If we don’t think of something soon, that’s what’s going to happen to you. Whatever we do, we’ve got to get the DeLorean fixed. What’ll happen to your teenage Dad if we don’t get it back to 2015 so he can get back to 1985?

SCOTT
I’m getting confused. Dad mentioned paradoxes in his story. If things get too messed up the whole universe could unravel.

Suzy rolls her eyes and replies sarcastically.

SUZY
Only the universe?

SCOTT
Let’s go get something to eat in town. There’s a bakery in the square. The smell from there earlier was amazing.

At the bakery, Scott and Suzy get something to eat and sit on a bench outside next to a sickly looking youth. They hear a voice calling from behind. They don’t see Kid Tannen approaching.

KID  Hey McFly!

All three of them on the bench look round.

KID
I thought I told you to stay out of my sight. What are you doing hanging around here?

Scott stands ready to square up to Kid. He then realizes that Kid is actually talking to the sickly youth, who is actually 16-year-old Arthur 'Arty' McFly, Scott’s great-grandfather and also George McFly’s future father. He resembles George quite a bit.

ARTY
I-I'm s-sorry Kid, I’ll go home. I was just getting some fresh air after my illness.

Kid notices Scott gawping and moves his attention to him.

KID
And what are you looking at Butthead? You’re really beginning to annoy me being everywhere I go.

SCOTT
Just leave him alone. What’s he ever done to you?

KID
None of your business and anyway, what are you going to do about it?

SCOTT
If you keep hassling this guy you’ll find out.

KID
Hey, why don’t you just take a short walk off a long pier?

SCOTT
Eh?

An old 1920s car pulls up with two of Kid’s buddies, Cue Ball, Matches and Zane in it. They are all aged around 25. They are big built, mean looking guys. The driver, Cue Ball, leans out of the window.

CUE BALL
Got yourself some trouble Kid?

KID
Some idiot from outa-town keeps getting in my path. I was about to teach him a lesson.

Scott gestures to Suzy to take Artie away out of trouble, which she does without Kid seeing.

SCOTT
Stay out of that guy’s way. Do you get a kick out of picking on those younger than you? What are you, about ten years older than us? You’re just a big coward. I bet if someone bigger than you came along, you’d be off like a shot.

CUE BALL
Sort him out Kid, show him who’s boss. What the hell is that he’s carrying anyway? Looks like one of those boards you lie on when looking under automobiles.

SCOTT
It’s a skateboard. Don’t you know anything dorks?

Kid moves towards Scott in a threatening manner.

KID
Why you little…

Scott realises it’s time to escape. He points over Kid’s shoulder.

SCOTT
Woah, what the hell is that!?

KID
Huh?

Kid looks over his shoulder, to see what Scott is looking at. By the time he realises it’s a diversion, Scott has hit him with his skateboard and knocked him over. Scott leaps onto his
skateboard and skates off. Kid gets up and rushes to get into Cue Ball’s car.

KID
Get him! Now!

The car wheel-spins off after Scott. Scott ollies onto a wall with his skateboard. He grinds along a bit, before leaping to the other side, flipping the board under his feet and landing smoothly on it. He heads off round the square with the bullies hot in pursuit. Scott leaps up and board slides a rail. The car knocks trash cans and boxes out of the way. The locals are in disbelief of what is happening.

Artie is standing next to Suzy. His jaw drops.

ARTIE
Where did he learn to do that?

SUZY
Down at the skate-park. He’s always down there showing off doing flip-tricks and grinds on the half-pipe.

Artie looks at Suzy confused.

SUZY
My name’s Suzy, what’s yours?

ARTIE
Ar-Arthur. Arthur McFly, but everybody calls me Artie. Who’s your friend?

SUZY
Oh, he’s Sc…

Suzy remembers that Scott is using a pseudonym.

SUZY
He’s Charlie Chaplin.

ARTIE
Isn’t that a movie star?

SUZY
Yeah, he gets stick for it all the time.

ARTIE
Hey look, here he comes now.

Scott rides back into the square and the gang comes from the road on the other side. They turn and head directly towards Scott. Scott swerves, ollies and grinds along the side of the car before rushing past them. The car spins round in the road and zooms in hot pursuit. Scott uses a lamppost to swing round a corner and across the path through the centre of the square. The car brakes sharply and comes to a halt in front of Jones’s manure wagon, narrowly avoiding crashing into it.

KID
That was close, that little runt nearly caused us to be covered in horse crap.

The car speeds off again and chases round the square after Scott, who is performs more daring tricks. A police car sounds its siren, which causes Scott to look over his shoulder. He looks back and almost crashes into an old lady crossing the road. He turns to apologise.

SCOTT
Sorry!

Scott turns to see where he is going again, and suddenly he hits a rock in the road and is catapulted into the manure wagon. The police stop their car. In the distance, Chuck and his gang stop momentarily to see what happened, before disappearing along the road. Suzy and Artie run to the scene along with half of Hill Valley. Scott sits up covered in manure and wipes his face.

SCOTT
Ugh! Manure!

Chief Constable Roger Strickland, aged 54 gets out of the car with his young 18-year-old associate.

STRICKLAND
Come on son, you’re under arrest. You must accompany us to the station. We’ll have none of this carry on in this town.

SCOTT
But, it’s not my fault.

STRICKLAND
Save it for later son, I don’t want to hear it. You’re going down.

Scott’s backpack is taken from him and he is pushed into the car.

STRICKLAND
That's how you handle them officer, never give them an inch and maintain discipline at all times. Remember that word. Discipline.

OFFICER
Yes sir.

They get into the car and Scott looks out of the window as Suzy and Arty look on. Suzy picks up Scott’s skateboard.
SUZY
I thought that guy was a teacher.

ARTIE
No, that’s his brother Inspector Roger Strickland. Mr. James Strickland Junior the teacher and he are very similar. They both hell-bent on keeping order in the town.

SUZY
How am I going to get Sco... I mean Charlie out of the cells?

ARTIE
I’d better speak to my father.

In the police station cells, Scott sits alone locked up in second hand clothing. There is noise from other inmates.

At the police station main desk, Strickland is looking through Scott’s bag, and holds his iPhone up.

STRICKLAND
What the hell is this?

He pokes around with it, and even tries to bite it, but nothing happens. He hides it when William McFly (40) enters the station with Suzy and Artie.

Scott is still sitting in his cell when Strickland comes and unlocks the cell.

STRICKLAND
Okay son, it’s your lucky day, you’re free to go. A kind soul has bailed you out. Why someone would bail out a slacker like you is anybody’s guess.

Scott is led through to where William, Suzy and Artie are waiting for him.

SUZY
Sco… I mean Charlie! This is Will… Mr. McFly. He’s paid to get you out. Artie, his son you’ve already met.

WILLIAM
Hello there Mr. Chaplin. I only felt it right after I heard what happened. That thug Tannen has been hassling young Artie here for years. It’s about time someone stood up to him. I only wish the police would realise who the criminals really are, instead of picking on the heroes.

STRICKLAND
This young man caused a disturbance of the peace. He’s got slacker written all over him.
Now get out of my sight.

Strickland hands Scott his backpack.

WILLIAM
Don’t take any notice Charlie, he’s full of wind. His younger brother is a teacher at the school. He’s just as bad.

SCOTT
Where’s my board?

SUZY
Don’t worry I’ve got it.

ARTIE
H-hey, thanks for s-sticking up for me in the square. You didn’t have to.

SCOTT
No problem mate.

Scott, Suzy, Artie and William leave the station. Strickland pulls the iPhone from under the counter and looks at the item he didn’t return to Scott. After pressing around it, the phone lights up starts to switch on. Strickland, shocked, almost drops it before looking at it in wide-eyed amazement.

STRICKLAND
What in God's name?

William, Scott, Suzy and Arty return to the bar in town. Joseph and Rose are behind the bar. Sam is swinging on a chair smirking.

JOSEPH
Ah, Mr. Chaplin. We heard all about your arrest. Here are the belongings that you had left in your room. I told you any trouble and you’re out. I want you to leave. We don’t want any criminals staying here. It puts the punters off. It’s bad for business.

SCOTT
But…

JOSEPH
I’m sorry, but that’s my final word. If you could be on your way now. Your bill is squared up.

WILLIAM
Come on now Mr. Baines, the lad was sticking up for my son. He’s a hero, not a criminal.
The real criminals are that no good Blacksmith’s lad and his gang of thugs.
JOSEPH
I said that was my final word. If you don’t leave, I’ll have to call the authorities again.

SCOTT
Again? You called them to start with?

JOSEPH
There was a disturbance of the peace outside my establishment. It was my duty.

Scott starts to square up to Joseph, but William pulls him back.

WILLIAM
Come on lad, you can stay at my place. Your friend too. There’s plenty of room.

Scott grabs his stuff and mutters to Joseph.

SCOTT
Screw you then.

Scott turns with a glaring look and leaves with the others.

ROSE
He's a very strange young man.

JOSEPH
He's an idiot, comes from upbringing, parents were probably idiots too. Samuel, if you ever have a kid like that, I'll disown you.

Sam looks up at his father inquisitively.

William takes Scott, Suzy and Artie back to the McFly household. The family are all at home. William brings Scott and Suzy in. William’s wife Mary, 40, is preparing dinner. Their children are around reading and playing with 1920s toys. The children consist of Alice, 17, Douglas, 12 and Martha 7.

WILLIAM
Hey Mary, Set another couple of places for dinner sweetheart. We’ve a couple of guests staying.

Scott and Suzy have a look around the house at the old-fashioned décor and ornaments. Scott is fascinated by the family portraits they have. He lifts a photo which seems to be about 9 or 10 years old. He doesn’t realise it’s the same photo as Marty finds in the library in 1955 in Back to the Future part III. Across the room, Mary pulls William to one side.

MARY
William, you’ve not brought strangers into the house again have you?

WILLIAM
Mary love, the young lad saved our Artie from being attacked by that Tannen thug again. He ended up in bother for it. The least we can do is put him and his friend up for a couple of nights.

MARY
I don’t know if I have enough food to go round. Your father is coming around tonight as well.

WILLIAM
I’m sure we can manage. Leave a bit off my place if necessary. Hey Charlie; Suzy, come and meet my wife Mary.

Scott and Suzy come over.

WILLIAM
Mary, this is Charlie Chaplin! And he’s an actor. And this is Suzy…

SUZY
Lee. Suzy Lee. Pleased to meet you Mrs. McFly.

MARY
How do you do?

WILLIAM
Come and meet the kids. Now let's see, of course you already know Artie, this is Alice, this is Douglas, and over there is little Martha.

The children acknowledge Scott and Suzy’s presence and get back to what they’re doing.

MARY
Dinner will be ready in a little while. It's beef stew and dumplings.

SCOTT
Erm, I’m a vegetarian.

WILLIAM
A what? What’s one of those when it’s at home?

SUZY
He doesn’t eat meat.

MARY
Well what do you eat then?
SCOTT
Vegetables, Soya, Quorn, that sort of thing.

MARY
I’m not sure I’ve heard of Soya and Quorn. I've never heard of anything so daft. I’ll be struggling to make you anything.

WILLIAM
You won’t grow big and strong without a good bit of meat inside you. You do look a bit pale. Maybe that's through not eating meat.

SCOTT
I’m fine with just vegetables, honest.

MARY
Very well.

The McFlys settle down to dinner. Scott has a big plate of vegetables and Suzy is picking at hers because it’s not as processed as 2015 food. William’s father 65-year-old Seamus McFly is with them.

Scott speaks to William.

SCOTT
Where’s your mother? Is she not joining us?

WILLIAM
My mother passed away two years ago after a long fever.

SCOTT
Oh, I’m sorry.

SEAMUS
You not having any meat boy?

SCOTT
Err, no, I don’t eat it.

SEAMUS
You’ll waste away.

Suzy notices Seamus’s Irish accent.

SUZY
So you’re from Ireland? When did you move to America?
SEAMUS
I moved here with my wife Maggie in the early 1880s. William here was the first of our family born in America. It’s a great life out here. I used to have a farm out on the outskirts of town, along by the railway line. So, how long are you two in town?

SUZY
We’re on our way to Hollywood to become actors. We decided to stay a while in Hill Valley to earn a bit of money.

MARY
Have you found jobs yet?

SUZY
We’re still on the lookout.

SEAMUS
I couldn’t help noticing your friend’s shoes. They’re very colourful. Where did he get them? China? I remember an old friend who visited Hill Valley many years ago wore something similar. He dressed very interestingly. He was the talk of town.

SUZY
What happened to him?

SEAMUS
It was very strange. One moment he was in a shootout with the biggest villain in town, which he won very effectively, and then he was off out of town. The next we heard he was killed when a steam locomotive ploughed into the old Shonash Ravine. There was something odd about how that all came about. It was all covered up.

SUZY
We know about that. Clint Eastwood his name was, Scott... err Charlie, we know about that don’t we. Charlie?

WILLIAM
Mr. Chaplin. Are you okay?

Scott sits at the table looking very pale and a bit faint. He says nothing.

MARY
Have a glass of water.

Mary hands Scott a glass of water and he drinks from it. He puts the glass down.

SCOTT
I need some fresh air…
Scott stands and feints on the floor. William and Suzy rush to him. William pats his face to wake him up.

WILLIAM
Mr. Chaplin…

Scott’s eyes roll.

SCOTT
I’m being erased… I need the Doc…

WILLIAM
What’s he on about? Does he need a doctor?

SEAMUS
That’s what happens to you if you don’t eat meat.

SUZY
He’s been trying to look for an old friend. The Doc.

WILLIAM  The Doc?

SUZY
Doc Brown. Emmett Brown. An old man with long, white hair. He used to live around here as a blacksmith, but we can’t seem to find him anywhere.

SEAMUS
Emmett Brown? I knew an Emmett Brown. Married a school ma’am. Lovely woman. They had two boys.

Scott manages to look at Suzy in surprise. Suzy looks excited.

SUZY
You know the Doc Mr McFly? His wife’s name is Clara.

SEAMUS
Yes that‘s right. Emmett  was a good friend to Clint Eastwood. I’m sure he had something to do with the locomotive accident, but nothing ever came out of it.

Scott is feeling better and returns to the table.

MARY
How are you feeling? Do you want a lie down?

SCOTT
I’ll be fine. Seamus, err, Mr. McFly sir, do you know what happened to the Doc? I mean Emmett Brown. I really need to find him.

SEAMUS
Well, He moved to Hill Valley around the time I did. After he married and had kids, he built a mighty fine locomotive of his own. Very impressive it was. He said he built it in memory of his late friend. He was a blacksmith when he first came to Hill Valley but he stopped doing that about a year later and concentrated in inventing things. Around about the turn of the family eventually moved into a farmhouse way out west of the town.

SCOTT
Where is it? How do I get there?

SEAMUS
I found it by chance one day. I thought the family were gone forever. I was out hunting by the Thomas forest when I found the house. It had a train track spurring off the main line to it. It’s about seven or eight miles west along the train track. I’ve no idea why he moved so far away from civilisation. Very strange.

SCOTT
We’ve got to go there Suzy. No time to waste.

Scott stands up ready to go.

MARY
You’re not going anywhere tonight. Not if you’re feeling off colour.

SUZY
We’ll go in the morning.
