Part 4
Sunday, October 25th, 1925, 8.35am.
The next morning, Scott leaves the side door of the bar wearing 1920s clothes. He fiddles with the collar, as he feels uncomfortable in it. He heads across Courthouse Square and
notices he isn’t being stared at like before in his 2015 clothes.
SCOTT
Where the hell is Suzy? I'd better head on over to Hilldale.
Scott looks around the square.
SCOTT
Where the Hell can I get a cab in this place?
Scott makes it to the area where Hilldale will be built in about 60 years. There is a road, but there are no buildings to be seen. He looks around trying to work out where he is in relation to where they arrived from the future. He sees tyre marks on the road, but no DeLorean or
Suzy. He climbs up a fence and looks round trying to see if he can see them, but to no joy.
SCOTT
What am I going to do now? What would Dad have done?
Scott thinks for a moment.
SCOTT
The Doc! I need to find the Doc!
Scott returns to Courthouse Square and heads back the bar. Before he can enter he meets Joseph who is cleaning the windows. His son, Sam, aged 15, is slouching at the bottom of the ladder.
JOSEPH
Good morning Mr. Chaplin, you were up early this morning. How are the clothes? Do they fit okay?
SCOTT
They're fine thanks. Hey, do you know of a family called Brown who lives around here? I’m looking for an Emmett Brown.
JOSEPH
Brown? I’m not sure I do, sorry.
SAM
I know Emmett Brown.
SCOTT
You know him? Do you know where he lives? I need to speak with him.
SAM
Sure, Emmett Brown lives at 1640 Riverside Drive. It’s a lovely big house with a big drive sweeping up to it.
SCOTT
Thanks pal.
Scott rushes away down the road. He stops and turns back and calls back.
SCOTT
Where’s Riverside Drive?
JOSEPH
Other end of town, block past Maple.
SCOTT
Okay thanks.
JOSEPH
Will we be seeing you in church this morning Mr Chaplin?
SCOTT
Erm, maybe…
Scott rushes off again and mutters to himself.
SCOTT
Block past Maple? That’s John F Kennedy drive.
Scott rushes around the corner of Maple Drive. He trips over a girl tying her shoelace.
SCOTT
Sorry, sorry, are you okay?
The girl is Suzy dressed in 1920s clothing.
SUZY
Watch where you’re going.
Scott realises it’s Suzy.
SCOTT
Woah! Look at you!
Suzy recognises Scott.
SUZY
Scott! There you are. Where did you go? I’ve been worried sick.
SCOTT
Not half as worried as I’ve been.
SUZY
You did a runner from the hospital. I went to check up on you and you’d gone.
Suzy bursts into tears.
SUZY
I didn’t know what to do. I wish we’d never gotten into that car.
SCOTT
What happened? Where’s the DeLorean? Why are we in 1925? The last thing I remember was heading back home to 2015 along Hilldale Road before waking up in hospital talking to my Great-Grandmother, I think. I had to get out of there; she was asking too many questions.
SUZY
Don’t you remember the truck? In 1985? It suddenly reversed back at the lights as we were about to go back to the future. There was a loud bang and we ended up here in 1925.
SCOTT
I don’t remember much. It’s pretty hazy.
SUZY
The front of the DeLorean got battered, you were unconscious and I had to get help. I think the accident would’ve been a lot worse if we hadn’t vanished through time at the moment we did. I dread to think what happened to the truck. I struggled to get you out onto the side of the road. The DeLorean is in a bad way. I managed to get it going long enough to hide it, and then I had to run to town to call for help for you. I didn’t know what else to do.
SCOTT
It’s okay, I’m fine now, just a bump. We can sort it. We can get the car fixed and go home. I know where Doc lives.
SUZY
I hope so, the car hardly moved when I tried. I booked in at the Bluebird Motel in town. It’s really cheap there. I glad they didn’t see the date on my bills. They looked at them but seemed happy with the watermark when I told them that’s what dollar bills look like in New York now.
SCOTT
I’m staying at the Café 80s which is an alcohol-free bar now. Imagine that? Don’t worry, we’ll find Doc and he’ll sort everything out and we can go home.
SUZY
You look funny in those clothes, especially with your sneakers.
Scott smiles at Suzy and the two of then head off to 1640 Riverside Drive.
SCOTT
This is the place. It’s the Doc’s mansion. Dad has mentioned this place. Apparently it's gonna burn to the ground one day in the future. I hope somebody’s home.
They knock on the door. A white haired man answers the door. It is Judge Erhardt Brown, aged 35. He looks like Doc in the pictures Scott has seen, but with mousey brown hair, a thick set moustache and small round rimmed glasses.
SCOTT
Doc, is that you?
ERHARDT
Doc? I am not a Doctor, I am a judge. How may I be of assistance young man?
SCOTT
We’re looking for an Emmett Brown. We are in a predicament and he’s the only one who can help. Are you not him? You sure look like him.
ERHARDT
My name is Erhardt Brown. You have the right address. Emmett does live here, but what in the name of Sir Isaac H Newton can he possibly help you with?
SUZY
It’s difficult to explain. Is he in? Can we talk with him?
Erhardt looks puzzled and doesn’t say anything for a moment.
ERHARDT
One moment please.
Erhardt pops his head inside and calls out.
ERHARDT
Emmett, could you come to the door for a moment please?
An eleven-year-old boy with blonde wavy hair comes to the door. He looks very young for his age.
EMMETT
Yes father? What is it?
Scott and Suzy’s look surprised and then look at each other .
SCOTT
Erm, I think we’ve got the wrong house. Sorry to trouble you. Come on Suzy let’s go.
Scott and Suzy walk away quickly down the drive, whilst a puzzled Erhardt and Emmett look on.
EMMETT
Who was that father?
ERHARDT
They were nobody son. Come on; you need to get on with your studies. You need to put in as much study as you can to become a lawyer.
EMMETT
Aww, pop, I wanna play with my train set. I’ve rigged it up so it goes faster than ever before!
ERHARDT
Emmett, you can’t waste all your time with those darn trains. There’s no future in them.
Erhardt and Emmett head into the house and close the door. Scott and Suzy walk away down the street.
SCOTT
Now what? That was definitely the Doc. I should’ve realised he would’ve been a little boy at some point. I should’ve thought fourth-dimensionally. I just thought of Doc at the same age as he was in Dad’s story. I want to check my iPhone to see if I can work out what to do next. Is it in the DeLorean? Where did you hide it?
SUZY
I’ll show you.
Suzy takes Scott to the field with undergrowth where DeLorean is hidden. The front of it is bashed in.
SUZY
I drove it in here. I don’t know how I managed it.
Scott opens the door of the DeLorean. He gets in and tries to start it up to no avail.
SCOTT
Damn, what are we going to do?
Scott takes out his iPhone and opens up the file with Marty’s time travelling tales on it. He scrolls down to 2015 and notices the words are all scrambles with strange symbols.
SCOTT
Damn it! What’s happening with this? The text’s all screwed up.
Scott scrolls to the end to where Marty has family photos of how his family turned out. The photos of Scott are starting to look slightly distorted.
SCOTT
Hell no. What’s happening? No, no! It can’t be. It’s like what was happening to Dad. I must be getting erased from history. How could that be? What have we done to change it? All I’ve done since I’ve been here is leave hospital and stay the night at the bar. What are we going to do?
SUZY
What do you mean? What happened to your dad?
SCOTT
He went back to 1955 and managed to stop my grandparents from meeting for the first time. He had a photo of himself with my aunt and uncle and it started to fade. They being erased from history as they wouldn't be born if my grandparents never met. When Dad managed to get them to kiss the photo restored itself. I need to find out what has happened to make it happen to me.
SUZY
What about the accident before we left 1985? That was also in the past from our point of view.
SCOTT
What did we crash into?
SUZY
A black jeep, truck type thing.
SCOTT
Please don’t tell me it was a black 4-by-4 Toyota truck.
SUZY
Yeah, I think it probably was.
Scott holds his head in his hands.
SCOTT
Oh no.
Scott checks his iPhone again.
SCOTT
The text at the end of the story has changed. Needles was taunting me to drag race at the lights… He called me chicken… I reversed and the next thing I remember was waking up in hospital with a badly broken hand… Hit and run driver… Couldn’t play guitar again… Oh no Suzy, you know what this means.
SUZY
No, what?
SCOTT
We hit my Dad in his truck with the DeLorean. He broke his hand again, like he should have done in the accident with a Rolls Royce when he raced Needles. He couldn’t play guitar so he didn’t make it into the big rock star he was. He then could only afford to have two kids and so I didn’t even get born. This is heavy Suze.
SUZY
So what happens now?
SCOTT
We’ve got to figure a way of stopping all this from happening, or else I’m gonna fade from existence.
SUZY
Woah! How long will that take?
SCOTT
I don’t know, but we’ve got to think fast.
Scott and Suzy return Courthouse Square. Scott has his schoolbag and skateboard from the DeLorean. They both head by the old Blacksmith’s yard.
SCOTT
It’s a long shot, but Doc Brown was a Blacksmith here in 1885. We may be able to find where he is our what happened to him here.
SUZY
1885? That was… forty years before now. He’d be ancient. He can't be still alive.
SCOTT
I know it’s a long shot, but the Doc sort of got a makeover in the future which added years to his life.
SUZY
The future?
They wander into the yard, which is dimly lit.
SCOTT
Hello… Hello. Is anybody here?
Nobody answers. The two of them look around the building for signs of Doc. Suzy idly picks up a horseshoe, which is hanging up and inspects it. Suddenly a figure, 25-year-old Irving 'Kid' Tannen, appears out of the shadows holding a gun. He's a mean looking guy with a small moustache; very much a gangster type.
KID
So you’re the no-good vermin that’s been stealing from my yard.
SCOTT
No, no, we’re just looking for someone. A Blacksmith by the name of Brown.
KID
There’s no Blacksmith by that name here.
SCOTT
Is there another Blacksmith in town?
KID
No, the Tannens have run the Blacksmiths in Hill Valley since 1886. My grandfather, Buford acquired it after the previous Blacksmith vanished from town.
SCOTT
Buford? Your grandfather’s Buford “Mad Dog” Tannen? You’re a Tannen?
KID
Yes I’m Kid Tannen. Buford was my grandfather. He was shot dead several years back. And I wouldn’t be calling him “Mad Dog”, I find that very disrespectful. Now if you don’t mind, I would like you to stop trespassing on my property, and leave with that strange
contraption you’re carrying. (Kid points his gun).
SCOTT
Woah, Woah, I’m only looking for an old friend of the family; there’s no need to get heavy dude.
Kid’s father Chuck Tannen, aged 47, shows up. A typical looking Tannen, with thick beard not too dissimilar to Mad Dog's.
CHUCK
Is this runt bothering you son.
Suzy mutters to Scott.
SUZY
Not another one.
KID
They were just leaving pop.
CHUCK
I’ll give them a hand, Irving.
SCOTT
Irving? I thought your name was Kid?
KID
Pop, don't call me that. You know I hate it.
Chuck grabs Scott & Suzy’s arms and drags them towards the door.
CHUCK
It's the name your mother gave you son.
Outside Scott pulls away from Chuck and almost knocks him down.
CHUCK
You want to watch who you’re messing with. This is just a warning, steer clear of my family and just watch your backs.
Chuck goes in and slams the door.
SCOTT
Those Tannens are becoming pests.
SUZY
What now?
SCOTT
The only other thing I can think of is tracking Clara, Doc’s wife down. She was a teacher at the local school. They may be able to help.
SUZY
Today’s Sunday, school won’t be open. We’ll have to try tomorrow.
SCOTT
If that’s not too late for me.
