Chapter 14
Daisy held out two invitations when a guard stopped her at the door. He matched her picture on the invite to her face and smiled, letting the pair inside. Daisy squeezed Ward's arm in excitement as the entered the grand ballroom. She looked around in wonder at the beautifully furnished room and let out a low whistle, "hail hydra."
Ward rolled his eyes, but did have to admit that this was probably the nicest place he had ever had to go undercover at.
Daisy leaned towards him and whispered in his ear, "what do we do?"
Daisy let go of his arm and he extended both of his arms towards the table near them. He handed her a glass of champagne from the tray and took one for himself, clinking the glasses together, "we blend in."
"So we drink, eat, mingle, dance, rob."
Ward shrugged as he sipped his drink, "basically."
Daisy took a deep breath and wiped her hands down the side of her dress. When Ward saw that she was nervous, he extended a hand, "dance with me, Hannah."
She gave him a nervous smile but took his hand and walked to the dance floor where plenty of other couples were dancing. She rested one hand by his neck and he squirmed a little. She giggled, "geez, Gregory, I forgot you were ticklish."
He glared at her but put a hand on her waist, taking her other hand in his.
They danced in time to the music, dancing like everyone else. Ward slowly spun Daisy so she could check out their surroundings. She then returned to her original position and leaned up to whisper in his ear, "four guards by the wall we want to get to. Probably no chance of slipping by them without causing a scene and blowing our cover."
Ward nodded and whispered back, "any other ways to get to the vault?"
Daisy nodded, "only one. Spin me again." He did as he was told and when she came back she whispered to him, "only one guard."
"That seems like the preferable option."
Daisy nodded and they turned to face the direction of the guard so Daisy could keep an eye on him constantly. "He keeps checking his watch," she commented, confused.
"Probably waiting for his break when he'll be relieved. The four guards on the other wall just changed and there was approximately a one minute window where there was no guard. We need to wait until ours disappears, then we'll slip through that way before we're spotted."
"One minute's not a long time. We can't run, people will stare."
"Then we'll hang out at the bar close by and when he leaves, we'll just pretend we want some time alone," he stated as if it was obvious. Which it probably was to him, but Daisy had never done this kind of thing with a partner before. The only other time she had gone undercover at a party was at Quinn's and she ended up with a gun pointed at her head and Ward had to save her.
She nodded, finally, and took Ward's hand, letting him lead her to the bar. Each of them grabbed a new glass of champagne and stood by the bar, waiting for the guard to disappear.
When the time finally came, Ward tapped on her shoulder and grabbed her hand. He flashed her an award winning smirk that would make nearly every girl melt and she giggled as they both slipped unseen down the hallway. As soon as they were back there, Ward let go of Daisy's hand and pulled out his gun that he had hidden in his suit. They walked carefully down the dark hallway, hoping that no one would come looking for them. They finally reached a door and Ward kicked it open. He and Daisy slowly walked down the stairs that led them to the bright basement.
Daisy squinted her eyes at the sudden change in lighting, but made her way to the door panel. She inserted the computer chip into the panel and it sparked. "Security's down. We have five minutes before they notice and send someone down here to check on us."
Ward nodded and once Daisy unlocked the door, he stormed into the room, gun ready. She ran past him when he signaled that the coast was clear and she made her way towards a glass case in the middle of the room. Lying right there, on a velvet pillow, was the 0-8-4. All she had to do now was get to it. She looked around for any alarms she might trigger and she lifted her hands above the glass case, wiggling her fingers.
"What are you doing?! I thought you disabled all the security!"
Daisy sighed and dropped her hands, "way to spoil the moment, Gregory."
"Hannah, you can have your moment later, just get the jewel."
She unlatched the glass case and pulled the gem from its position on the pillow, slipping it into her clutch.
She nodded to Ward and they made their way back to the party, so they wouldn't raise suspicion.
To the rest of the partygoers they looked like a young couple sharing a moment, but really, Daisy was in Ward's embrace and they were whispering back and forth to each other.
"How long until they notice?"
"They should notice any second now," Daisy looked down at her watch and nodded, "they just noticed."
"We should probably stick around her for a few more minutes so we don't raise any suspicion."
"I agree," she whispered into his ear, resting her finger behind his ear where she knew he was ticklish.
He let out a low growl of annoyance, "Skye..."
She smiled when he used her old name. It just sounded so much better when he said it. She furrowed her brow as she thought this. She wasn't supposed to think like that, he still hasn't completely gained her trust back. He was certainly on the right path, but the only thing holding her back from trusting him all the way again was her still slightly broken heart.
She raised her lips closer to his ear, "we should get going."
She pulled back slowly and entwined their fingers as she pulled him out the door. He shot her a glare and she simply smirked at him.
When their limo arrived, he held the door open for her and she slid in. He climbed in next to her and shut the door behind them, letting the S.H.I.E.L.D agent take them back to Coulson.
Daisy opened her clutch as she leaned against Ward's arm subconsciously. She held out the gem to let him look and she grinned at him, "we did it."
