His electronic shield, that he usually slept with on his arm, had broke when the team defeated Ultron a year ago. He decided he'd use his newly aqurried shield (his dad's old one)** instead of having it replaced, but could not have it on his arm while resting. He started to fight them off using hand-to-hand combat, but he was outnumbered. Any chance of escape vannashed when he was gagged, and couldn't shout for help. He was genuinely scared.
