chapter six
THAT DISCO EPISODE
SE01:E07
On a Thursday evening, the friend group is hanging out in Eric's basement as usual. Fez, Hyde, Michael, Kelso, Donna, Eric, and Babe sit around the table while Jackie sits on top of the washed while reading a newspaper. The bigger group is listening as Eric says the rules and places the cards on the table for the game they're about to play.
Babe shifts uncomfortably next to Donna in the cramped space she was subjected to sit at because Kelso had decided to take her chair and when she went to sit down on the other chair Hyde instantly took giving her a mischievous wink.
So she was holding a giant grudge against both of the boys as she sat on the couch with the remaining group. The armrest digging into her waist. She had asked Eric and Fez to move over a little so she could be more comfortable but both boys had complained and shut down the idea, so to say she was pissed was an understatement. Donna simply found the whole thing amusing as she stared at the girl next to her.
"The game is Anaconda. Big Ace. Eightball. Red Lady. Jackson. Fiver. Wild Man..." Eric said as he placed a card on the table between each sentence.
Suddenly Jackie gasped and put down the newspaper walking over to the group. "Oh, my God, Michael, they opened up a disco."
"Where at?" Kelso asked.
"In Kenosha. You can wear your David Bowie butt-huggers." Jackie replied in what Babe could only guess was supposed to be a sensual tone but it was just not it in her opinion. Kelso smiled while slowly nodding.
"Michael, that would be super." Hyde mocked in fake excitement.
"Laugh if you want, man, but my butt looks pretty good in those." Kelso told him.
"Come on, are you guys crazy? I mean, a disco? No way." Eric said not very fond of the idea.
"I don't know. It might be kind of fun to go dancing." Donna replied.
"Or we could go." Eric instantly changed his mind eagerly.
"I've got nothing. I fold." Kelso announced.
"Well man, if you're out, go make some popcorn." Hyde told him. Kelso stood up and made his way to the stairs. Jackie who was dancing to imaginary disco music next to Hyde suddenly did it more intensely which pissed off Hyde. "Take her with you."
Jackie walked away with Kelso. As Babe instantly stood up making Donna fall over Eric and the latter on top of Fez. She ran to Michael's past seat.
"Finally" She muttered, ignoring the glares she was receiving.
"What is disco?" Fez asked once he sat up straight again.
"Disco is from hell, okay? And not the cool part of hell with all the murderers... but the lame-ass part where the really bad accountants live." Hyde replied.
"I actually really enjoy disco, especially ABBA I have many of their records." Babe said matter-of-factly.
"I am in no way surprised at that, you've always had awful taste in general." Hyde told her disappointedly, she frowned.
"Hey, I gave you the shoes you're wearing as a birthday present." She replied in indignation.
"Okay well, then in most things." He compromised while the girl glared at him.
"Excuse me, what are you doing?" Eric asked Donna as she picked up and started at Kelso's cards.
"Looking at Kelso's cards."
"That's cheating." He replied, not like she gave a crap about it.
"Eric, we can't find the popcorn!" Jackie yelled making Eric jump over the couch but before going up he turned towards Donna.
"Hey, um... Donna, why don't you take a look at my cards? Then you won't have to wait for me to leave." He said getting on the couch again as the two began fighting. "No. Come on, take a look. Tell me what I have, you cheater." He turned his cards around and she stared at them frowning.
"You've got nothing." She said annoyed.
"Yeah, but I'm gonna bluff. So, watch out." He replied smugly before leaving.
"Donna has stuff for Eric. Yes?" Fez asked Hyde, Babe and the two boys smiled knowingly.
"Not stuff. Thing. Donna has a thing for Eric." Hyde explained. "Why do you have a thing for Eric?" He asked her.
"He makes me laugh, he doesn't ask me stupid questions... he's smart, and you know." She replied which made Babe let out an "Awe" before Donna glared at her making her shut her mouth.
"No, I don't know." Hyde ignored their interaction as he replied.
"I know." Fez said raising his hand, Hyde pointed at him to answer. "It is because Eric is noble, and a woman wants her first lovemaking... to be in the arms of a man she can trust." Fez said making Babe scrunch up her face in disgust. While the other two laughed, Donna incredulously and Hyde in amusement.
"Fez." Donna turned with a smile towards the boy.
"Yes?"
"Go make popcorn." She told him menacingly. Making the boy silently get up and leave. Donna smiled to herself for a moment neither Hyde nor Babe noticing this before she stared up at the two and turned to Babe. "So Babe, how's Brett?"
Babe looked up and shyly smiled her cheeks turning pink. Making Hyde groan in annoyance.
"Is Brett Dunphy seriously going to be the topic of this conversation now?" He annoyedly asked, Donna turned to him and glared.
"You can happily leave and not listen." She scolded him.
"No, I'll stay." He replied quickly, making Babe very confused before she turned towards Donna.
"He's good, we're good if that's what you're implying. I'm very happy." She sweetly told the redhead. Donna smiled.
"I'm glad you're happy." Donna told her, Hyde frowned and the redhead noticed this. "We're happy for you, right Hyde?" She asked him eagerly awaiting his answer.
"Ecstatic." He replied monotonously, clearing not beaming with joy. Babe ignored this and smiled.
"Babe! We burnt the popcorn! Can you come up here and help us?" Eric yelled at the girl from upstairs making her groan.
"I'm going to murder them." She replied angrily before making her way out of the room.
"How's Brett?" Hyde mocked in a childish voice, making Donna burst out laughing. "It ain't funny, Pinciotti."
"I find it hilarious." She smugly replied. "The fact that you have a giant thing for Babe and don't wanna admit it, is very amusing to me."
"I do not have a thing for Babe, I just dislike Brett." To this the redhead raised an eyebrow clearly not believing him, Hyde scoffed. "He's too perfect, okay? No one can be that perfect and not have something be wrong with them. He's nice to everyone! Do you know who's nice to everybody? Serial killers in movies with a lot of charisma." He said like it was a common fact.
"Are you accusing Brett Dunphy of being a serial killer?" Donna asked in disbelief. Hyde pointed at her.
"You said it, not me."
"No, you said it."
"I don't know what you mean, you did."
"Hyde you literally said it."
"Said what?" Asked Babe from behind them making them jump, neither of them had noticed the return of the group.
"Nothing."
—
The group sat relaxed hidden in the back area in Eric's basement. A cloud of smoke surrounding the table they sat at.
"Okay, I thought about it, and I'm going to the disco. Just on the off chance, they might mix up a little rock and roll, man." Hyde said all smiley which made Babe let out an even larger smile before she tiredly put her head on his shoulder. And he placed his arm around her shoulder bringing her in.
"Yeah, well I have something to say. I went to the mall today... and I bought a pair of new shoes. And they are the coolest kicks in the cave." Kelso said half excited and half lost.
"So, no more for Kelso. He's toasted." Eric chuckled.
"I would like some toast if you are making some. Or food of any kind would be good. I am starving." Fez said looking around excitedly.
"Oh, I read somewhere there are these people in India who fast, man. Yeah." Hyde laughed. "And their minds are so advanced, they can actually think themselves to death, man."
"Whoa. I hope I'm not doing that right now." Kelso said before he dazed out for a moment before continuing. "My mind's always doing things that I don't even know about."
"Man, we always think of so many brilliant things down here... but then later, I can't remember any of them. I mean, they're brilliant, man." Eric exclaimed as he flapped his arms around in amazement.
"Someone go make toast right now." Fez ordered.
"I'll do it, you guys are gonna need a pick-me-up after this session." Babe said looking around at the boys who were completely out of it. Hyde let his arm drop and let her get up, as she made her way upstairs.
She personally didn't smoke because well she was scared that the school board would find out and kick her off the many clubs she was part of. She did accompany them sometimes in their sessions mostly to mess with them when they were all dazed.
The girl was fixing up some toast when she heard Eric entered the kitchen and he confusedly stared at her. She expectedly raised her eyebrows at him waiting for him to talk. When the toaster rang making him sigh in realization.
"I forgot you were making the toast, I came here to do it." He told her, she laughed at this.
"Man you're so far gone right now." She laughed again before ruffling his hair, making him slap away her hands playfully.
"Eric?" Red asked entering the room, Babe panicked at this. Eric was in no state to talk to Red and not to mention he heavily smelled like weed.
"Yeah, Dad?" He asked confused and panicking as he approached Red.
"Listen, I know you need gas money for Saturday night. So, if you're willing to do a few extra chores, I'll pay you $10." Red told him, Babe frowned as she discreetly watched the interaction while applying more butter to new pieces of toast.
"Sure. I can do that." Eric replied slowly putting more emphasis on the 'Sure'. Letting Babe know he was probably not doing well.
"Now I need you to sweep the garage, clean the leaves out of the gutters, get the dry cleaning and fix that shelf in the pantry. Now run that back to me." Red told him as he looked at something he was holding. Babe widened her eyes in panic, as Eric stared at her panicking too while Red wasn't looking.
"Okay, fix the shelf, sweep the garage, pick up the leaves..." Eric said unsurely.
"Pick up the dry cleaning." Red reminded him.
"Yeah." He sighed in remembrance.
"The gutters?"
"Fix the gutters." He wrongly answered as Babe got the last of the pieces of toast on a plate to quickly make her exit if Eric got out of this interaction alive.
"Clean. Clean the gutters." Red corrected him.
"Clean out the gutters, fix the shelf, sweep the leaves." Eric replied.
"The garage." Red reminded him, Babe internally sighed. At how painful it was to watch.
"Fix the garage." Eric said hopeful.
"Sweep it." Red corrected again, Eric scrunched up his face painfully.
"Listen, I'm not gonna pay you $10 for nothing." Red exclaimed.
"Sweep the garage, pick up the cleaning, clean up the gutters fix the shelf." Eric finally said it correctly.
"Do that, and you got yourself gas money." Red told him pointing at him with a flashlight before putting it away.
"Didn't you say something about leaves?" Eric asked.
"They're in the gutters." Red replied.
"Right. Pick them up. Clean them up." He said before he remembered something. "I've gotta make toast."
"Isn't that what Everly was doing?" Red asked confused as he stared at the plate the young girl was holding.
"Oh yeah! Right, bye now!" Eric exclaimed pushing the girl out of the kitchen with him. As she let out small giggles.
"That was both entertaining and painful to witness." She told him, he let out a sigh.
"I'm glad my misery was entertaining to you." He replied as they walked down the stairs to the basement.
"Oh, it was." She said as Fez instantly stood up and grabbed the plate, shoving the goat in his mouth as he let out a moan at the taste.
"This is great Babe." He said as he slowly ate the toast.
"I know, I made it so of course, it is." She replied as she threw herself on the couch.
"It's just toast." Hyde said which prompted a pillow to fly out and hit his head, as Babe smiled at her accuracy.
—
The group was standing in Eric's driveway as they waited to finally leave and make their way to the disco. Jackie, Kelso, and Babe talked eagerly about the clothes they were wearing and about how excited they were. While Eric and Donna flirted and the two remaining boys talked to Mrs. Forman and Mrs. Pinciotti.
"Yellow looks amazing on you, Everly." Jackie complemented Babe's long-sleeved v-neck yellow and white patterned flowy dress, she gave her a smile in return.
"Thanks, you look amazing too." Babe told her.
"Of course I do. I always look good, silly." Jackie told her making Babe let out a laugh at the younger girl's antics.
"I look good too." Kelso frowned at the lack of compliments coming his way.
"You look very sexy." Jackie told him with a smirk, making him happily nod. Babe let out a grossed-out grimace.
"Sorry, Brett couldn't make it." Jackie emphatically told the girl who let out a sigh.
"It's fine, he had that very important game in Michigan." Babe reassured her. It was true Brett had been training all week for this match that would tell them if they qualified for the semifinals or not and Babe was right there to support him, which he immensely thanked her for.
"Okay, let's take some pictures. I'm ready." Kitty ordered as Midge ushered them together. "Steven, get in closer." She directed as Hyde dragged Babe with him to the other side of the car and placed her between him and Eric. Before wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her in making her laugh. She let out a wide smile as she stared at the face he had pulled for the camera. "Okay, let's all smush together. Okay. Big smiles. Nice."
She heard the click of the camera and realized she had failed to stare at the camera because she was staring at Hyde, she internally shrugged.
"Okay, now, girls." Kitty ordered as the boys walked away and Babe wrapped her arm around Donna's waist and smiled for the camera. "Look how pretty. Smile. Nice." Kitty said as she took the picture. The three girls walked off. "Now, boys." The guys made their way over to the car. Babe sighed at the extensive photo shoot. "Oh, so handsome." Kitty took the picture and laughed. "Okay, now. One, two..."
"Hey, Mom, why don't I take a picture of you?" Eric walked over to her.
"No, no, no, no. Okay, you'll be late. Bye now." Kitty shooed them away. Fez, Kelso, Jackie, and Babe all made their way inside the backseats of the car. Somehow they all surprisingly fit in the back. Sure they didn't have much space to move or shift in their sits but they weren't uncomfortable.
—
The disco was booming with music and people dancing. Babe had briefly danced around with Donna and Jackie earlier for a little bit before she danced around alone for a while until she ultimately settled down at the table. She wished for Brett to be there so she could have a male partner. She sighed and turned to look at the dance floor.
In the middle of the dance floor stood Kelso dancing his heart away –quite awfully– as the friend group sat at the table. Most of the group watched in horror, while Jackie stared angrily as Kelso dropped to the floor doing some weird dance movies, before finger gun pointing around finally noticing his missing girlfriend. He looked around until he saw her sitting at the table with her arms crossed.
He hurriedly shoved past the other members hitting Babe, who was sitting at the end of the table, in the head on accident making her elbow hit Eric's left side who groaned at the impact. Donna and Hyde laughed next to Eric in amusement. Kelso sat down next to Hyde and faced his girlfriend.
"Jackie, where'd you go?" He asked worriedly.
"I had to get something for you to bite on 'cause I told everyone you were having a seizure." Jackie angrily replied.
"When do they play the disco music?" Fez asked.
"This is disco music." Donna answered him.
"It's good isn't it?" Babe asked excitedly.
"No, no. This is samba." Fez nodded at Babe before turning to Donna as he replied to her.
"Fez, it's disco, man. It's crap." Hyde exclaimed.
"Oh, I think I like this crap." He said happily as he stood up and patted Jackie's shoulder. "Come, Jackie, let's get down." His hand on Jackie's shoulder.
"No, I think I'm a little tired." She replied, obviously not wanting to dance with him, she turned to stare at Kelso.
"Don't resist me, mama." Fez said as he put his hand on her jaw turning her to face him. "It's boogie time." He grabbed Jackie's arm and the girl instantly followed.
"I think you just lost your date." Donna told Kelso.
"Yeah, it's cool 'cause Jackie and I are history!" Kelso screamed at her but nobody could hear over the music.
The group watched as Fez and Jackie danced and quite well, the two had kind of a professional dance routine. Fez spun her around and dipped her as the two stared intensely into one another's eyes. Babe let out a giggle, kind of wishing she was dancing too.
"Oh my god." She said in disbelief when Fed picked up the girl and spun her around.
"She must not weigh that much." Eric reassured.
"She touching his ass?" Kelso asked as Jackie wrapped her leg around Fez's back and he held her by her waist to him.
"Is it weird to say that I am jealous of Jackie because she's dancing with Fez?" The boys looked at her in disbelief and pure shock.
"No, I kind of get it." Donna sided with her. They watched as Jackie slowly dragged Jackie back to the table before they started to play Fernando by ABBA.
"Listen. Merengue." Fez said before running back.
"Fez, you're crazy." Jackie followed suit. Babe swayed to the music in her chair, she loved this song. She quietly sang along.
"Wow, they are really good." Eric said as they continued to stare at them.
"Yeah, if you want to dance that way." Kelso replied angrily, his arms crossed over his chest.
"I would love to dance that way. I love this song." Babe said as she stared at the dancing duo and kept swaying her head to the beat.
"You wanna dance?" Hyde asked her, she turned towards him and smiled warmly.
"Sure, yeah." She replied the smile never leaving her face. Donna held in a smirk.
Hyde stood up and took off his glasses. He walked next to her and held his hand out for her and she extended hers, he grabbed her hand, and together they walked towards the dance floor. He pulled her hand lightly bringing her into his chest and wrapped his right arm around her waist as he tenderly held her right hand with his left.
The two had their faces fairly close to one another. He wore an extremely wide smile as she laughed slightly at him, looking into his eyes. Before they began moving around the dance floor, Hyde leading her.
"When did you learn to dance?" She asked in wonder, he was surprisingly good. "If I remember correctly, and of course I do. You didn't know how to dance." He continued smiling and shot her a mysterious wink. "You know I quite like this side of you." She told him giving him a cheeky smile.
"Yeah. Actually, you're my first dance." He said the smile never leaving her face, and she was pretty sure this was the longest he had smiled since Kelso had been attacked by a squirrel a few months back.
"I'm your first?" She mischievously replied before laughing. "I'm honored." She replied smugly.
"This is nice." He stated and Babe hummed in agreement with a quick nod. Then he twirled her around before bringing her in again and dipping her slightly. She stared up at his eyes as he briefly glanced down at her lips but it wasn't fast enough as Babe caught him.
When a sinking feeling appeared in her stomach at his action. Instantly multiple questions ran in her head. Was it on accident? Was she imagining it? Was it intentional? Did he wanna kiss her or something? She didn't have to wait long as Hyde quickly answered the question. His smile lightly dimming.
"Babe, man, I feel like I wanna kiss you." He said bringing her back up and around him twirling her again. He put his arm around her waist again. "You don't have to kiss me back if you don't want." She nervously chuckled not believing what she was hearing. "I'm not kidding." He told her seriously.
She looked around in his eyes for a hint of a joke somewhere but she found none. His stare had turned somehow deeper as he glanced at her lips again, and then look back into her eyes. She panicked slightly at this.
How long had he been feeling this way about her? Why now? Why was he telling her this, when he knew she had a boyfriend. Was this just a silly friend crush? And the bigger question that she was now facing was, how did she feel towards him? God, she just wanted to dance to ABBA with her friends not experience a relationship crisis.
"How long?" She finally croaked out a word, her voice breaking slightly and softly.
"I don't know really, one day I just started to look at you differently." He told her sincerely.
"Is it just a–" Before she could finish her question he answered for her.
"Yes, I'm pretty sure it's just a friend crush. You know I don't do intense." He rushed out, she nodded slowly.
She looked down at the floor and sighed, when she looked back up she was met with Hyde's lips leaving a kiss on her forehead. Her face burned at the feeling but the spot where he had briefly kissed her somehow burned, even more, she now sport a different gleam in her eyes as she stared up at him. Before she hugged him and he hugged her back.
"I can settle for a forehead. Obviously, I wanted to kiss you, like actually kiss you but I know you're with that Brett dude and I'll respect that." He told her, she snuggled her head into the crook of his neck. Before he let out a playful laugh. "You know if you ever wanna explore your options, I'm your guy." He playfully said to her making her laugh wholeheartedly.
She let go of the hug and stared at him, her mind was still a mess at his previous confession but she had pushed those thoughts away once she saw his expression. She was glad it was just a friend crush and that he was playfully joking with her about it.
But something deep inside her told her, it was definitely something more than what he was willing to admit and she buried that thought even deeper as the two continued dancing trying to forget what had just happened but for two very different reasons.
