Chapter 6
-Marie POV-
The last thing in the world I expect is for Newt to hurt someone. And you know what happened today? He punched Gally! He wasn't even doing anything wrong! Well, first impressions aren't necessarily the best way to judge someone.
Earlier this afternoon, I was sitting on a log away from the other Gladers, and I was feeling fairly lonely. I heard footsteps and thought it was Newt, even though I was hoping it was Minho. Even if I kicked his butt on my first day, I was starting to find him pretty cute.
Whoops. I let too much slip out.
"Hey, Marie," the person shyly said. I turned around, and all hope deflated. It was just Gally.
"Hey, Gally," I replied politely. I didn't want to show that I was expecting Minho or Newt. "How have you been?"
"Pretty good," he answered. He was standing in front of me awkwardly. I didn't know how to make the situation any less awkward. "What about you?"
"Alright," I sighed. "It's hard fitting in when you're the only girl."
"If only I could relate to that," Gally said. I looked at him and saw sincerity in his eyes. I was thinking that maybe we could actually get along. Then a torpedo came in and punched Gally in the gut. I sat there in shock at what happened. The torpedo stood up, and I got a good look at him. I saw the hair first, and then the face. Newt.
"Marie, if you could just-" he started to say. I stood up and started walking towards the forest.
"I have nothing to say to you, Newt," I coldly replied. "Go away. Leave me alone." I jogged into the trees and sat on a log after about ten minutes.
"Why did Newt punch Gally?" I wondered to myself. "In fact, why would he?"
I heard a rustling in the bushes. It wasn't really dark out, but the sun was starting to set, which meant that the Runners were coming in. Which meant that Minho was coming soon, which meant...
Not again.
"Is that you, Marie?" a voice called out. With the rustling ringing in my ears, I couldn't tell who it is. Please don't be Newt, I prayed internally. The footsteps got louder, and I got my dagger ready just in case. Slowly, I turned around.
"Minho?" I whispered incredulously. "What the heck are you doing here?"
"Well, I saw you running away from Newt, so what the shuck did that shuck do?" he asked. I looked up at him, tears filling up in my eyes. He sat down next to me, and I looked back down.
"I don't know," I replied, voice quavering.
"Uh huh," he gave me a look. "You totally came here because you were so happy that you were crying."
"Well, I'm confused, okay?" I confessed. "Newt punched Gally, and I have no idea why."
"Doesn't sound like him," Minho said. I nodded in agreement, as we sat there in silence. I was about to get up because of the awkwardness, but Minho did something that made me change my perspective of him.
He pulled me into a hug. I didn't think that he even did that stuff. I am a confused slinthead right now. What the shuck is going on? Did Minho really hug me? In fact, is he still hugging me?
"Just stay for a bit longer," he whispered into my ear. "You're easy to cuddle with." I didn't realize how tense I was until then. Slowly, I wrapped my arms around him and closed my eyes. It was a nice couple of minutes, and I actually enjoyed it.
No. I'm not falling in love. Never.
Little did I realize that Newt was watching us. Just behind a tree.
