Chapter 18
I hold a container of chocolate chip cookies while Lilac holds one of sugar cookies as we all stand at the door of my family's apartment. Jul knocks on the door and then steps back. My mother open a the door with a broom in her hand, looking just about ready to hit someone.
When she sees me she drops the broom and pulse me into a hug. I feel Dali take the cookies from me so I don't hurt myself or my mom. She pulls back and kisses me on the forehead.
"Well don't just stand out there! Come in, come in!" She exclaims. We follow her on and sit down in the living room. My grandmother sits on the only chair and watches as I walk in.
I walk over it her and give her a hug. She smiles back at me. My dad and grandfather walk inside and upon seeing me my dad swoops me into a hug. I pat him on the back and pull away. I hand my mom the containers of cookies.
"Go ahead. Open it," I say to her. She opens the containers and I see my parents and grandparents eyes light up at the sight of all the cookies. My mother kisses me on the forehead and then distributes them to everyone.
"Tell me about what happened," my dad says. And so I tell him the story of how my and Jul left the country and went to the South , how we met Lilac and Dali, and also how we started a war.
My dad nods the whole time and looks from me to Lilac. He then stares at me and I nod nervously. He's gives me a thumbs up and I let out a breath in relief.
"So this is my girlfriend Lilac," I introduce her officially. I hear my grandma gasp and I look over to see her eyes shining. She claps her hands and smiles at me.
My grandpa smiles too and the only person in my family who doesn't seem very happy about it would be my mother. She looks over at me and sighs. She crosses her arms and frowns.
"How many times do I have to tell you? You're just confused," she says. I shake my head as I feel tears prick my eyes. My dad tries to calm my mom down but it doesn't work.
"She's in love Lou. Can't you see? It shouldn't matter who," a rough scratchy voice says. I look over and see my grandma smiling back at me. My grandma doesn't talk much, maybe once a week so this, this means a lot to me.
My mother sighs and hangs her head. I grasp Lilac's hand tighter and wait for my mother to say something. Jul and Dali look over at me and smile reassuringly.
"Okay. I support you. I will need a bit of time to get used to it though," she says, looking up at me and Lilac. I nod and smile at her. She looks at Lilac and softly smiles.
She has to get used to me being a lesbian but this is a good start. We talk for a while, my grandma even saying something occasionally. My dad is happy about the South winning the war and so am I. It seems like everyone in my household is.
My grandfather says that most people aren't very happy and that they want their ruler back. Most people are starting to get informed though and are starting to see how bad of a country they lived in before now.
We talk for a while longer and we decide to take my family out for dinner. We walk outside and my family stares at the car for a long while before they finally get in. Luckily everyone fits and I drive off to a small but good restaurant that we looked up this morning.
We pull up to it and get out. we walk inside and I see the waiter glare at my family's clothes. They lead us to a table and I tell my parents to order whatever they want, we have enough money for it.
The waiter does back and takes our order, glaring at my parents when they order what they want like I told them to. My dad and grandpa's are pretty expensive and I don't think the waiter thinks they can pay for it.
The waiter goes away and then brings us out drink a a few minutes later. We chat while we sip on our drinks and watch a soccer game on television. My dad and grandpa seem to like having lots of new channels to pick from, already making the sports ones their favorite.
The waiter comes back with our food and there's a lull in the conversation as we eat our food. My dad and grandpa keep watching the game while at eat and my grandma looks pretty happy to be out of the house for once. My mom looks really happy too.
We finish our meals nd We talk at the table for a while until the waiter comes back. He takes out dessert orders and then piles our plates up to take to the kitchens. He walks off, staring back at us.
The he walks right into someone and all the plates shatter. Every one at the table stifles a laugh as we watch him get mad at the person nd then yelled at by his manager.
"You're fired!" The manager yells and I stare in shock. The former waiter storms out and slams the door. The manager walks into the kitchen and then a couple seconds later a waitress walks out.
A waitress comes up to our table and apologizes. We give her out dessert order because the waiter stormed out with ours and she walks to the kitchen.
She comes back a little hail later with our dessert and we eat it while we laugh about the waiter who just got fired.
