Chapter 9: The Beasts
Willow looked up at the large black stone panther that stood in the middle of the village. She was reeling from finding out Hope was wanting leave the team. She felt betrayed by her friend, even if she was only leaving for a short time.
"Her name was Christara," Jessica said, scarring Willow.
"Who?" Willow asked, turning to look at the jungle woman.
"The Beast statue. Her name was Christara."
"Beast?"
Jessica looked at the half-siren with her yellow eyes. This young one interested the jungle woman.
"An ancient race, born from the jungles and forests to protect the people of Ninjago from harm and danger. They all could change forms."
"Into what?"
"Their spirit animal. Some were fierce wolves, others mighty panthers. From the smallest bird to the largest mammal, there was a Beast with that form."
"I've never heard of them before. What happened to them?" Willow asked.
The jungle woman's expression darkened. Memories of fierce battles and bloody wounded filled her mind. She shook her head to clear her thoughts of the wounds she had to lick clean at one point in her life.
"The Overlord's number one Worsak, a powerful warlock as well as a Beast, attacked them. He killed many brave Beasts that tried to stop him," Jessica said.
"Why would he do that? They were his own people."
"He was injured in battle, and lost his ability to transform into his Beast form, causing him to lash out at the other wolves."
"So way is he after me?"
"That is something I do not know," Jessica said, leaving the half-siren alone with her thoughts.
Jessica walked towards a small hut. She needed answers, answers she couldn't get without opening some old wounds.
"Arthur, how are you today?" she greeted the wolf. His hands and feet were chained to the wall, making it impossible to change forms.
"As well as I can be, traitor," Arthur growled.
"I am no traitor! I serve no false master that makes me beg for my food. I am both a healer who saves lives and a warrior who defends those I love," she growled.
"Yet where is your cub and mate? Oh that's right one is dead in the ground and the other is part of our pack. Where is your clan and family? You had to buried them years ago. Face the facts. You're all alone now healer. You have no one left. You are no warrior," Arthur said.
Those words broke her heart. Tears flowed down her face as she remembered finding her father and mother, covered in their own blood. She remembered how her father had taken her hand and told her to be strong with his last breath.
Jessica remembered the scream that poured out of her at the death of her clan and family.
A wolf howl pulled her from those thoughts.
"It's about time the hunting hounds arrived."
"Hounds?"
"Just those annoying ninja."
The jungle woman was in shock.
Worsak had unleased the beasts within mankind.
